LD Russell, in the Department of Religious Studies, leads this weekly Monday program to teach the concepts, ideas and practices of several of the world's biggest religions.

Since the comment was disabled on the Hinduism video i am forced to comment here. I was listening to the lecture on Hinduism. The first and very much thing i wanted to state that Hinduism is not a religion in-fact there is no such term as Hinduism. It is just a name given by the outsiders to identify the people who follow Sanatana Dharma. Dharma is totally a different thing from religion. In a religion people following that religion are abide to follow the rules which are written in their holly book. which is not in the case of Sanatana Dharma. Dharma means justifying between the right and the wrong and do accordingly, or on a general way we can tell it's the way of living. There is much to say about but it will go very lengthy.

Dharma in short is finding your own individual path with several ways and one of them is meditation (you will perceive meditation is having nothing in your mind) but meditation is asking a question and then "meditating" over it for several hours or just a few spare minutes and then coming to a conclusion.

kzread.info/dash/bejne/mn17wbSkmqjXZKQ.htmlsi=sBgSU4CtqkL2qctT Great talk on Hinduism as in the link above. However, I want to point out one factual inaccuracy that is a common mistake propagated by foreign students of Hinduism. 330 million Gods is completely wrong. There are 33 koti Gods in Sanatana Dharma. Koti means types, however, is commonly misinterpreted as crore which is an Indian measurement meaning 10 million. So no, there aren't 330 million Gods there are 33 Koti (types) of Gods in Sanatana Dharma. These 33 types of gods are: 12 Adityas (Anshuman, Aryaman, Indra, Twashta, Dhatu, Parjanya, Pusha, Bhag, Mitra, Varuna, Vivaswana, Vishnu), 8 Vasus (Aap, Dhruva, Soma, Dhar, Anil, Anal, Pratyusha, Prabhasa) and 11 Rudras (Shambhu, Pinaki, Girish, Sthanu, Bharga, Bhava, Sadashiva, Shiva, Hara, Sharva, Kapali). In addition to these 31 gods, Indra and Prajapati are two prominent gods. While Prajapati is Brahma, the supreme god, Indra is also the first among all devtas. Thus, the list completes as having 33 types of gods. Therefore 12 Adityas + 8 Vasus + 11 Rudras + 1 Indra + 1 Prajapati = 33 Koti Gods

And to my knowledge he have been satisfactory and have been able to explain core philosophy of Hinduism to certain extent, not fully but yes, in one hour he had done best. India is a beautiful country. The way he explained that show the dynamics and complexity of Sanatan dharma. If people are getting offensive about 33cr, for this I can say that, be it 33cr or 33 types, it really doesn't matter. They represent the same reality. .i.e. Brahman. Even if there are 33 types God's, they themselves can take into other forms. To understand Hinduism you need to very open mindset, trying to understand what is beyond your eyes.

It also can be applied to the scientific way of Everything made of atoms .. In Hinduism we say we are made of Pancha-bhuthaas .Sky ,Air,Fire,water,earth..The cosmic dust...we go back to that when we die and disintegrate...and again get into this big circle ( Divine) ( physically) And if this is destruction ..then the recycling happens and we are ready to be used for to create another One or more smaller or bigger circle being.s... We can consider God Shiva as a recycle God ...😉

Sanatan Dharma is thousands of years ahead of western region specially from islam . There is Dharma and there is Sanatan Dharma , Dharma means sets of laws it can me modified but the Sanatan Dharma is Eternal laws . We Hindu perform some rituals and have some culture which can be modified as time and needs changes but the Eternal Laws can never be changed ,it is applicable even for Aliens and rest of the Life . Sanatan Dharma is so scientific that you can't understand it without knowing about Einstein's relativity and modern quantum physics,. Most of the modern finding of physics came out of study of Vedas . If Quran is a comic book then Vedas are the The Whole University including teacher and library . The Root of This Dharma is to be God . Nirvana , liberation , Mukti , means becoming God . God means to become everything.

@@anshdangi3603 Well to be honest, there's no such thing as "330 million" deities. The misconception itself came from the mistranslation of the 33 koti vedic devatas. However, in reality we do have MANY deities, including those from vedic pantheon, to Puranic deities, and folk deities from different regions of the Indian subcontinents. Moreover, even the different manifestations and forms of a major deity like Vishnu and Devi, are sometimes treated as independent deities. For example, Vishnu has avataras such as Rama, Narasimha, Varaha, Krishna, etc, and they too sometimes venerated as a singular deities. You may call this "330 million" deities as an expression, in a way calling the same source of creation, para Brahman, by many different names and forms. Even as a Hindu i could barely know a 100 or something. Hope that helps.

well sir as the comments on the hinduism video was disabled I m commenting here about ur comment on 330million hindu gods. Well this is a misconception(thanks to the Western translators who translated our Vedas wrongly)..vedas hv very complex sanskrit and no one till date have tranlared them correctly. The closest actual translation ever done is by sir aurobindo.. So here is the thing in Vedas it is mentioned tht Hindus hv 33 kotis of gods and koti literally means "type" And "crore".so here koti means type tht means Hindus don't hv 33 crore(330million) gods but 33 types of gods.😊

Talking about all human beings are equal... Well ask yourself if you treat your women in the same equal way as you treat your men, do you give the same respect and authority and is it the same everywhere in the religion you follow? Let's talk about slavery system that was followed in different countries. Again in my defence as a Hindu ( a true hindu who follows our tradition) Hindus did not enslave other ppl and we have goddesses as well unlike in all other religions the gender of the God has always been male and our Hinduism teaches us to treat women with the same respect and give them the same authority if they are capable, and cast system that came out was over the years we actually didn't have caste system in the beginning at all ppl were just divided based on the work they did and some jobs paid well, some didn't, some ppl worked very hard with their brain and some worked hard physically and even now we all know which jobs pay better(obviously the brain work), and eventually some ppl became poor and some became richer. Isn't that what's happening even now everywhere around the world? The divided sections of society kept to themselves. Well isn't that the same now as well? And as far as Brahmins are concerned there are good Brahmins as well as bad ones just like good Christians and bad ones, good muslims and bad ones. Talking shit about Brahmins collectively is wrong.

They just rode in and he told the people of mecca they were all free, but if they tried to hurt or kill anyone then and only then would they be killed. 3. You! Need to get your FACTS STRAIGHT! 4. In Islam a female must agree to who she marries. So saying she was a child, you are speaking conjecture. During those years it was the norm to marry young. All over the world at that time it was the NORM! British kings married girls 9 - 11 years old age. You! Need to do some research! Child bride? This going to be a long read, but bear with me for a good understanding: The age of Aisha r.a. it isn't mentioned in Qur'an at all. Therefore no solid statement. There are narrations pointing to different ages. What you hear a lot is the one alluding to 9 (because the missionaries love to use this as anti Islam propaganda) but this number could be an error of the narrator. According to Umar Ahmed Usmani, in Surah Al-Nisa, it is said that the guardian of the orphans should keep evaluating them in physical & mental fitness, until they reach the age of marriage, before returning their property (Quran 4:6). From this scholars have concluded that the Quran sets a minimum age of marriage which is at physical & mental maturity, which differ for each person. Since the approval of the girl has a legal standing, she cannot be a minor. Allama Kandhulvi says that the words spoken in connection with Aisha's رضي الله عنها age were tissa ashara, meaning 19, when Hisham the narrator whom reported to be very old & have lost memories only heard (or remembered), tissa, meaning nine. The fact that Aisha also been called as Abu Bakr's "little daughter Aisha" might added to the misconception. Little daughter here doesn't strictly means young daughter but could mean a term of endearment ("you might be 40 but you'll always be moms little son") Some time after the death of the Prophet's first wife, Khadija رضي الله عنها, Khawla suggested to the Prophet that he get married again, to a bikrun, referring to Aisha رضي الله عنها (Musnad Ahmed). In Arabic bikrun is used for an unmarried girl who has crossed the age of puberty and is of marriageable age. The word cannot be used for a six-year-old girl. Some scholars think that Aisha رضي الله عنها was married off so early because in old times girls mature at an early age. In Egypt there was 12 years old pharaoh, in European kings married 7 years olds. Henry VII's mother were married at 3 (although consummation probably happened only after she was 11). But this was not a common custom of the Arabs at that time. According to Rehman Kandhulvi, there is no such case on record either before or after Islam. Neither has this ever been promoted as a Sunnah of the Prophet. The Prophet married off his daughters Fatima at 21 and Ruquiyya at 23. Besides, Abu Bakr رضي الله عن, Aisha's father, married off his eldest daughter Asma at the age of 26. Aisha رضي الله عنها narrates that she was present on the battlefield at the Battle of Badar (Muslim). This leads one to conclude that Aisha رضي الله عنها moved into the Prophet's house in 1 A.H. But a nine-year-old could not have been taken on a rough and risky military mission. In 2 A.H, the Prophet refused to take boys of less than 15 years of age to the battle of Uhud. Would he have allowed a 10-year-old girl to accompany him? But Anas reported that he saw Aisha and Umme Sulaim carrying goatskins full of water and serving it to the soldiers (Bukhari). Umme Sulaim and Umme Ammara, the other women present at Uhud, were both strong, mature women whose duties were the lifting of the dead and injured, treating their wounds, carrying water in heavy goatskins, supplying ammunition and even taking up the sword. Aisha's رضي الله عنها nephew Urwah once remarked that he was not surprised about her amazing knowledge of Islamic law, poetry and history because she was the wife of the Prophet and the daughter of Abu Bakr رضي الله عن. If she was eight when her father migrated, when did she learn poetry and history from him? Aisha was considered one of the best Islamic scholars, where huge numbers of shahih hadits were attributed to her. The Prophet's companions would come to seek her advices. There is solid consensus that Aisha رضي الله عنها was 10 years younger than her elder sister Asma, whose age at the time of the hijrah, or migration to Madina, was about 28. It can be concluded that Aisha رضي الله عنها was about 18 years old at migration. On her moving to the Prophet's house, she was a young woman at 21. Now it is clear to you. How about age of marriage in Christianity? Let's check the bibles: " And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction. 36 But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry." - 1 Corinthians 7:35-36 35 These verses clearly state marriage is legal after 1st period. Most girls got them between 8-11. But there are who got them earlier like 7. Therefore according to bibles, it is legal for you to marry 7 years old if she already has her 1st period. Marry mother of Jesus married to 90 years old Joseph at around 12.

Amongst the various attributes given in Rigveda, one of the beautiful attributes for Almighty God is ‘Brahma’.‘Brahma’means ‘the Creator’. If you translate into Arabic it means ‘Khaliq’. Islam does not object to anyone calling Almighty God as ‘Khaliq’ or ‘Creator’or ‘Brahma’, but if someone says that ‘Brahma’i.e. ‘Almighty God’has got four heads and on each head is a crown and this Brahma has got four hands, Islam takes strong exception to it because such descriptions give an image to Almighty God. Such descriptions are also against what ishh taught and propounded in Yajurveda Chapter32, Verse 3 which says: “Na tasya pratima asti” “There is no image of Him.” (Yajurveda 32:3)
