Well done that judge for doing the right thing! Nothing about that performance was pretty. Hyperflexion, stiff back, downhill 'piaffe', disjointed passage. Finally an FEI judge standing up for the horse!

I’m not sure how anyone is defending this and claiming it was an accident! Look at the overuse of the rein aids, tension in the mouth, disengaged hind end, and consistently uneven steps in the piaffe/passage. This horse doesn’t look relaxed or happy, and with the constant open mouth and fussing to evade the heavy contact it’s really no surprise he bit himself. Modern dressage is getting increasingly harder to watch…

I can’t believe her, when she was forced to stop, she showed no remorse she in fact was mad at the horse and the judges. Unbelievable. I applaud the judges for doing something about and not turning a blind eye.

When she was showed that the horse was bleeding it appears she gets angry, with the judge AND the horse. I kept waiting for her to dismount and check his mouth at the very least make sure there was not a serious wound or injury. But no! She continues on. Real class act. Shame on you. If it is discovered she was aware of aa problem and chose to ride knowing it would cause the horse pain or further injury She should be banned from riding all competition. Something has to be done to stop abuse of any kind on any of these horses. Makes me so very angry. I thought we had learned to be better humans and owners. If he punishments on owners and riders aren’t severe enough AND enforced these practices will never end.

At the beginning she wasn’t angry at the judge, she was frustrated because she thought she had an error of course. Then she was confused and didn’t see any blood. So she just didn’t understand what was going on.

Are some kind of tortuous bits being used or is it from too much rider stress on the bit? Irregardless, she should be punished.

I'm not a dressage rider but clearly this rider is very heavy handed.

In den höheren Klassen wird leider ein aufsperren des Mauls, Zähneknirschen, Zunge herausstrecken, Taktfehler im Schritt und dergleichen viel zu oft geflissentlich übersehen und es werden hohe Wertnoten vergeben wo man in den unteren Klassen für Kleinigkeiten gnadenlos abgewertet wird. Diese Disqualifizierung ist ein wichtiges Zeichen.

... wenn man denn für "Kleinigkeiten" wie Taktfehler abgestraft wird... Diese "Kleinigkeiten" sind schließlich die Basis für gesunderhaltendes Reiten. Allerdings hatte ich, als ich kürzlich nach Jahren mal wieder bei einem ländlichen Turnier zugesehen hatte, den Eindruck, dass sich da in der Bewertung was geändert hat. Es wird tatsächlich in den unteren Klassen mehr Wert auf Losgelassenheit der Pferde gelegt.

@@dasreitteam4658 Es kommt darauf an, ob es einfach nur ein Taktfehler war, oder das Pferd bewusst erschreckt wurde. Wenn man Ingrid K. und Franziskus in der Siegerkür anschaut findet mal auch dort 2x Taktfehler. Nicht falsch verstehen, uch bin großer Fan von Ingrid, aber auch das zeigt die unterschiedlichen Maßstäbe und das die Richter in den unteren Klassen Ritte oft nicht richtig einschätzen. Da wird doch oft mehr nach Sympathie bewertet.

@@karinpithard9299 EIN, zwei Taktfehler können sonstwas sein, wenn der Rest sauberes korrektes Reiten auf einem losgelassenen Pferd ist. Müssten die Richter halt immer abwägen. Wenn das Pferd den ganzen Ritt durch nur aufgerollt und spannig geht, finde ich das viel viel schlimmer als EIN Taktfehler irgendwo. Im Übrigen ödet mich das exaltierte Gestrampel langsam wirklich an. Da schaue ich lieber bei der Arbeit eines jungen Pferdes zu, wenig spektakulär aber schöne leichte Bewegungen, kein Krampf, kein Zwang, Freude an der Sache und man sieht, was draus werden kann bei guten, einfühlsamen Reitern. Totilas hat so einen Meilenstein gesetzt. Alle sind auf das Gezappel abgefahren, Riesenhype, platziert trotz Lahmheit... nach endloser Quälerei, damit er wieder "funktioniert" - natürlich mit Rollkur... und haaach, was ist der so toll bläh blah blubb. NEIN.

I have read through many comments. It seemed to me that it was primarily about which of the posters was right. I have seen the horse run long distances with its mouth open, you can see the teeth very often and by now everyone should know that this (in horse-speak) is a clear pain reaction. Ears are held sideways most of the time showing subordination. You can see that the horse is afraid of various lessons, especially in the piaffe, when it stretches its upper lip. I have often seen this face on horses waiting for the next strokes. This is not "confidently accepting" the bit. This is a hectic, nervous chewing, which then also led to the injury in the mouth. Yes, horses can injure themselves, but here it was clearly provoked by the riding style. I wouldn't be surprised if the noseband was buckled too tight... When the rider was made aware of the bleeding mouth, she seemed more annoyed than shocked.

Yes I agree part of marking in dressage the horse should look relaxed any signs of anxiety and discomfort are always marked down. Even as simple as constant tail swishing can get marked down. Werth horse looks extremely tense and nervous about his job.

But why didn't the stop her when they first saw it? There is no excuse for their behavior. They constantly enable abusive riding. They are just as guilty as those who are the abusers.

@@janets6474 maybe they saw and stop. Maybe they had a doubt as well. I guess distance can be tricky unless it is really visible. We don’t know this!! And so far it sounds logic otherwise why stopped only at the end!! Maybe you are right but doesn’t mean it is always like this we must think positive and hopefully things change more quickly!!!

@@janets6474 Only the judge at "C" is allowed to call it since he/she is the president of the judges. All judges have a button to communicate with "C". You would have to find out if any judges saw it and communicated with "C" then find out why "C" didn't ring her out then. They enable abusive riding because the judges ARE often bribed to give better scores to certain riders, also if you don't give those scores to certain riders then you don't have a job as a judge!

@@spaziocasainterioare1656 we aren’t going to get anywhere like this. I know it’s not popular but this does not surprise me. Her horses rarely look comfortable or as if they are doing anything they enjoy. I know she is brilliant. It’s mouth is bleeding because the bit is too much and she was pushing too hard. We need to be more brilliant. Let’s do this with kindness and the horse’s welfare coming first. So Germany or Isabel does not win. Let’s send the right message that this is not dressage or good riding without the horses comfort being #1. Less short cuts more patience.

I refuse to believe or agree with that “It happens to everyone”-nonsense a lot of people are saying. It does not just happen, you don’t just make your horse bleed. Sure, they did not mean for it to happen, but they are surely to blame in some way. It never happened to me, it never happened to one of my students. It never happened in front of me to someone who was riding with nice soft hands. Not while I was judging and not when I was watching. So no, there’s no excuse for making your horse bleed.

@@babsw5886 oh those are to blame too imo. If a horse is so wound up it makes itself bleed, that horse should not be in a dressage arena. It’s that simple. If you ‘have to’ whip a horse over a fence, it’s not a showjumper or a XC-horse. Same with dressage, for example, Undercover is imo not a good dressage horse.

Yes. This is so sad and inexcusable for any rider but ESPECIALLY riders at such supposed “high” levels.

thank goodness the judges noticed. so sad that people will put the horse in a situation that the mouth will bleed. "it happens to everyone" bullcrap. If it happens to everyone, then everyone needs to fix what they are doing. None of my friends that i ride with have made a horses mouth bleed, my trainer has never made a horses mouth bleed, ive never made a horses mouth bleed... If you have this problem change what your doing...

So glad to see her eliminated! Shame. Abuse is never a training tool!

Her hands were uncharacteristically jerky in this performance and she had to use the spurs a lot. I don't know if this caused the bloody mouth or if he had a cut/bit his tongue and that was causing him to avoid the aids, but he was clearly uncomfortable and i would be surprised if she didn't know something was off.

Nothing about that performance was soft and fluid. It was painful for me to watch h, and obviously painful for the poor horse. Well done that judge for ending it. Wonder how many shows she ( the judge) will be invited back to?

Imagine what she does to that poor horse when she is out of the public eye!😢😢😡😡😡 Hurray for the judges!

Unfortunately, it's not the first time that her horse is feeling absolutely unwell. In another competition, he opened his mouth like that as well and briefly went lame in between the figures... I don't know why no one is telling her, that that's not the correct way. I also heard, that in an interview she stated, she said that one of her student rides with Rollkur.

Yeah, so does she. Lameness or the appearance of it coukd easily happen as a result of Rollkur as it does everything the opposite way real dressage is supposed to be performed. With Rollkur the rider holds the horses mouth and then spurs them. It's a horrific way to ride and assumably very painful for the horse.

Wow. Blood from almost the beginning. She is hanging on his mouth as shown by the blood but also her inability to keep her seat in the saddle. Then he goes behind the vertical and is being constantly spurred. She also repeatedly jerks on his mouth. Then the horse is popping his head above the bit to escape it. We also see his hollow back. The horse is really brave and tolerant. She should not be around any horses let alone nice ones. Why didn't the judges stop her?! So very painful to watch.

First of all: She was disqualified, so the judges stopped her. Second of all: Maybe watch all the times she moves her hands forward when the horse gets too tight in the neck? Why do you think the horse can pop the head up? Thirdly: She can't keep her seat? I am sorry, but that is just laughable.

@@blauespony1013 Nit at the same time she is spurring g the horse. She uses her spurs almost constantly. The hollowness of the back is another dead giveaway. He goes ahead of the vertical and behind it because of her riding, not the horse. The ride has to be evaluated from the very beginning. In most cases its the rider NOT the horse. This isn't the first time Werth has had a problem. Yes the judges eliminated her. But after the ride was done. That horse was bleeding almost from rhe beginning.

@@janets6474 Definitely too much spurs, but she is not using much pressure (still too much). How is that back hollow? The horse is even carrying itself in the piaffe when she gives the reins forward 1:50 (of course not slow mow, because would not fit the narrative, would it?). I want to see proof. And don't show me the highly manipulated videos of the WDR. I want to see videos without dramatic music, slow-motion and zoom ins. Because the claim has been made time and time again and yet there is no proof.

@@blauespony1013 The horses head pops up and his back hollows out. How can it not the way she is riding? She is grinding her seat. It's awful. There is plenty of proof. The other issue with Werth and the Rolkur is the constant use of the inside rein. Dressage riding is mainly from the outside rein to inside leg. This ride is incorrect from the start.

All you have is a gardening dog. What qualifies you to speak dressage? I don’t know, maybe you are qualified I am just asking here. You are speaking about the best rider in the history of dressage as if you had been a multi-Olympian.

I worked at a "Dressage'' stable in Coco FL.. And let me say... The abuse on training the horses was Horrible!! The "Hormones" and"Enhancement" drugs given to them, made them impossible to handle! 😪🙄🤢 Extremely aggressive ... So sad to see...

@@vicksta8875 I mean I want rosettes, but I'll earn them through hard work. I'd rather have a horse I can actually ride the test on than one pumped full of things I cant afford, hence why I took my Arabian off his calmers (herb ones not powders), I was no longer able to afford them. They were great for backing him but he doesn't particularly need them now he's been backed over a year so he's doing well.

finally something is being done to protect the horses. Unlike dogs, or cats, Horses can''t scream when someone hurts them. Putting harsh bits in their mouths, riding with strong hands, and spurring the horse up into the bridle - all hurt the horse - cause pain. Yet the horse doesn't scream.

I mean they do inform you if you know what to look for. Like my youngster was grabbing his French link bit, so I put him in a Waterford, he let me know he didn't like it but constantly having his mouth open. I kept him in it for a bit maybe 2 weeks (I ride like once a week maybe twice max) so he didn't have it in long but it was enough for him to learn there are some different bits out there and since putting him back in his French link he has been a gem, never grabbed it since.

When you know what the signs of pain in a horse are, so many equestrian sports become bloodsports. I can't possibly count just how many horses I've seen in equestrian competitions that were exhibiting clear signs of pain and suffering. Horses can feel a fly land on them. They are sensitive, emotional creatures. They deserve the highest respect and sensitivity from people interacting with them.

All I know is that if someone held up a cloth coated with blood from my horse, I would be off his back SO fast and checking on it.

This was difficult to watch. Her hands were really jerky. The horse was clearly uncomfortable in its mouth & when advised Werth’s body language (two hands going up in the air) showed she was annoyed. Even getting her horse to halt she pulled the reins, instead of soft hands and her seat. Poor animal.

Ein Schande, dass diese Tierquäler ihre Tierdrangsal auch noch als Sport bezeichnen

Her reaction is ridiculous and sad at the same time. It shows her character. I feel sorry for every horse she gets her hands on.

Elimination was the correct decision.

That poor beautiful, honest horse, looking in so much pain and spitting out blood (and who knows how much was swallowed) but still paving on bravely and courageously. I'd lay a good wager it's happened before now, and this won't be the last time - these horses are drilled so relentlessly behind the scenes, with those awful block and tackle bits in their mouths every time (I'm NOT anti-bit, but there is too much block'n'tackle curb-obsession in the equestrian realm, and too many harsh hands for such bits to be trusted with at all, let alone every day). No horse should end up with a bleeding mouth, from first-time ponies to Grand Prix in ANY discipline. Isabelle isn't getting any slack in the reins from me on this one - she's guilty of letting her horse get to a state of spilling blood... out of their mouth... 😞🐴 Thanks for sharing this - people need to know the state horses can get into, even in the hands of a critically acclaimed successful rider like Werth.

Horses can't spit (or vomit) but I get your point.

She is so heavy with her spurs, it's horrible. And her horse is not chewing on the bit properly, you can tell he is in pain and not supple. Poor thing, I'm glad she got eliminated. If I rode like this my trainer would beat me with my own crop!

I still feel awful, once (when I was newer to horses) I on accidentally made my horse's mouth bleed. back when I first got my mare, I didn't know that she would chew on a bit with copper rollers. She chewed one and it got sharp and cut her mouth. I felt so bad and still do, I immediately threw that bit away, and rode her in a halter for a week so her mouth could heal. I worked on making sure my hands were as soft as possible and that I was never pulling or jerking. I don't let her have bits with copper anymore, and I made sure to do my best to keep my mare relaxed. (she chews the bit when she is nervous, or if its a copper bit.) If you have this problem, change what you are doing! ESPECIALLY at this level. You should know what to do at this point. Not only this, but it almost looked as if she was angry at her horse.

Stop feeling awful! You sound like a wonderful caring horse owner - and we ALL make mistakes as 'parents'. The BIG thing is to learn, correct the error and keep aiming higher. Cheers!!

I am by no means an expert in dressage but it seemed to me she was keeping her horses neck arched by pulling back on the reins. I felt so sorry for the animal. Not to mention she didn't keep her legs still and her heels down. That is just the beginning .

Collection is “the thing” in dressage by keeping a short yet supple hand on the reins. Rollkur is an hyper collected form of riding that is more prevalent in this sport. And she’s also just not the most balanced rider. I can only imagine the amount of back pain this horse might have because she’s not keeping her seat deep enough

I bet that poor horse couldn't wait until that competition was over....sure doesn't look like it's having fun you can see the pain on the horses face...same on that human for treating an anim that way....good job by the judges....

I have never liked riding Isabell Werth, because it is seemingly nice, but as always, there is too much tension in the horse and in her ride, and not enough relaxation, which can be seen especially in piaffe, how the horse defends itself in maximum collection and load, or in galloping from her stiff hand ...

Too much metal in the mouth. If you can not ride without spurs and other torture equipments it is time to quit and do something else.

She is very heavy handed. Even the way she halts, even I don't use that much rein and I have a youngster. I need to use a little as he's still learning but he's also learning to halt with my seat and not rein. She seems to saw his mouth a little also, not as bad as I've seen some do it but still way more than a professional dressage rider should be seen, it should be very subtle aids in dressage that makes it look like they're just sitting there.

I have felt for a long time that it is ludicrous to have upper level horses wearing bits which can result in injury. You want to prove this horse is trained to the highest degree? Take the bits out of their mouths and ride them bridleless. A trip, a misstep, a loss of balance by the rider, and the horse is injured. How is that responsible upper level horsemanship? This is an issue in multiple disciplines-- dressage included. It's time for dressage to lead the way and start using bits which do not injure horses. Bitting technology is lightyears ahead of the old fashioned 'curb/bridoon' style from centuries ago. Top hats have been replaced by helmets. Let's talk about what other archaic practices need to be thrown in the bin.

A true test would be snaffle bits and no spurs. We would soon see a large number of riders disappear off the radar in the modern Grand Prix But how wonderful for literally 10s of 1000s of horses.

That poor horse. His face expressions were so painful to watch and I can't imagine the amount pain he was feeling! I don't know why she was "shocked" with the fact fact that her horse got injured because she was using the reins way too aggressively. I put shocked in quotation marks because she seemed more angry than she was surprised. The entire time I thought that she should just get off her horse instead of trying to see when she knew she wouldn't be able to. But I'm also very biased because she and Nicole thought it would be a good idea to speed up training instead of doing it properly and came up with Rullkur. 🤷‍♀️

He was uncomfortable in his mouth through all the test, open mouth, curling his lip. Softer hands and a better rider position might help.

@@janets6474 She supposedly rides 8 horses a day but she can barely breath after a 6 minute test... I've worked for trainers who rode 14+ horses a day and they only quit at that amount because the sunlight was ending.

@Jon wp hi there. long time since I was here I guess. 1st notification from DH in a while. again thank you for your thoughtful comment. not arguing with anyone's comments, but my daughter's horse once had a bloody tongue. Before we were able to find a good Equine dentist here in the Midwest netherworld, he had sharp points develop and cut his tongue back at the molars and he bled, at home. when the problem was solved, and not a problem here I am sure, it never happened again. At 10 & 11 she won all sorts of awards at both USDF and at the time USCTA events. Just thought that I would throw this out there for the rest of us caring for our own horses. 🙂

If you can't do upper level dressage with a single rein and a snaffle or something similar then the horse needs retraining or the rider doesn't need to be riding at this level. The sport has become a disgusting display of abuse, along with just about every other discipline. When it gets to the level where fame and money are in play, the horses always end up horribly exploited.

Double bridles are not the problem, bad riding is the problem. Some horses will not do upper level dressage without a double bridle. That does NOT mean the horses are badly trained, they are only badly trained if the double bridle is used to skip training steps.

I still think you could forgo the Double bridles. I mean, those horses will still do the dressage without them. I am a friend of losing every bit of tack you don't need. And Double bridles are not necessary. Just leaving this here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eIGjj9lvaayWh6Q.html

I am dumbfounded she kept leaning over to look after she was shown the evidence on a cloth that the horse was bleeding, like it was being made up 🤦‍♀️ It is goid that horse welfare in sport is starting to be put to the forefront over a riders eliteness and ego. Hopefully this will pave way to make changes away from the old school archaic thinking and methods used in equine training.

Damn! Her hands are so rough and wtf kind of bit is in that poor horses mouth?! The world of Grand Prix is really awful! These already wealthy owners riders will do anything to win. From beatings to this! Not necessary

Tierquälerei ist vollkommen Normalität im Modernen Dressursport. Daran wird sich nie was ändern. Die einzige Lösung besteht darin, diesen Sport entweder rigoros zu verbieten oder auf gebisslos, Sporen weg umzustellen. Und selbst dann würde es noch Monster geben die hinter verschlossenen Türen jede erdenkliche Brutalität anwenden um ihr Ego zu bedienen

Absolutely. I appreciate you went to look at other riders. There is an IMMENSE difference in her riding compared to others. This is because of Rolkur. Sge is not the only one but it is far to prevalent.

What is wrong with people, she is rated as one of the best dressage riders yet she has caused pain and bleeding to her horse just to be able to win. I hope up and coming young riders do not follow her example. Same on her.

You clearly believe that she has been unconcerned about the horse and has in fact been rough and harsh for selfish reasons. But just because you believe it doesn't make you right and doesn't make these things true. I myself "know" that she is a remarkable rider with the highest level of sensitivity and understanding for her horses. I life things happen and I'm sorry to tell all the people living in fairyland that a little bleed in the mouth of a horse is not what one wants but it is also not a major drama. It all worked as it should. The small sign was noticed and the rules kicked in. The rules are to protect the horses. They are not there because a small amount.of blood is a sign of something g major. They are there so that at the most minor hint of a possible problem the horse is removed from the performance. In any case concern for horse's welfare is a good and necessary thing on which we can all agree. But if we all had hysterics everytime a scratch or a scrape or a rub caused a little blood we would all be at the doctor's everyday and the vet would be too busy to see all the patients. There would be no doctors or vets available when something serious happened.

The horse bit its tongue for all we know. That probably has never happened to you in your whole life? And yes, that tends to bleed, especially if you spit into a handkerchief.

She even said out loud "It was nothing serious, just happened at the wrong time", seriously?!? That makes me so mad - to hear a supposed top rider talk about her horse's bleeding mouth as nothing to take note of, that that is to be considered completely normal and that it literally just happened at the wrong time! What does that tell us about her riding in general away from the judges?! After the host of the press conference had asked her about it, she was visibly mad and whispered something to the german team leader that sat to her right that made him laugh and the thought of how they conduct their training back home frankly makes my spine shiver. Truly shameful!

Well done to the judges . . . . . . what amazes me, if that was me and the Judge said that my horse is bleeding, I would have jumped off my horse to see where the blood was!!! Just putting it out there, there didn't seem to be much of a concern from the rider!!! In my eyes anyhow!

She "looks" at the horses mouth... Knows somethings wrong... Then told by someone else there's something wrong... Then shown the blood to prove there's something wrong... And yet keeps pulling at the bit... Yup makes total idiotic sense... 🙄

She should be ashamed and she never got off to help this poor animal. They are not a team. If you have to force them then you are not the right fit. You have to have tremendous trust between you. I don't use a bit and my boy loves to dance!

She rode to the owner once she realized what was going on. Giving the horse the reins and riding out is much nicer than going down, grabbing the reins and leading it out. She can use way less pressure on the bit while riding (though I am not sure that that was going through her head).

I find it hard to believe too. There has been so much discussion on this and by now, no one should want to jeapordize their program.🙄

3:42 the moment she continued because she thought "this can't be me" instead of checking what's wrong with her horse. Creepy women.

A tensile force meter between the mouth and the hands of the rider would be a very good idea. It should be a rule to have one and the result should be live in the arena.

7.6 points for a piaffe that is not in any remote way a piaffe....what about rating the actual performance instead of the name of the rider??? Modern dressage is a pain to watch, and given Werth hystory of abuse and harsh training she should not even be allowed to compete anymore. This is just bullshit.

This can also happen when the bridle bands are too tight and the edges of the teeth are sharp, then the inner cheek gets squeezed into the teeth and the horse can bleed.

I cannot believe even AFTER she was told her horses mouth was bleeding…. She STAYED ON and even looked ticked off? about it? Ive never made my horses mouths bleed back when I used bits or ever. (I haven’t put a bit in my horses mouths in at least five years.) If at any time somebody told me my horses mouth is bleeding I would be IMMEDIATELY concerned for their well being and I would get OFF of and check them. Pressure would come OUT OF THEIR mouth instantly. Are you KIDDING me???? She looked angry t about it and like she didn’t think it was a big deal at all. How sad. 😞

You are not allowed to dismount until you leave the dressage court. I agree her attitude was disgusting.

@@cornpop8586 that’s not true at all. In some countries it is even compulsory to dismount after a elimination like this (or lameness etc). And in her defense, when she put her hands in the air, she thought she made an error of course.

Apparently the vet found the horse hurt its mouth eating and she competed anyway.

At the end, she is not even trying to use reins less, awful

Dressage Horses are the ballet dances of the horse world - and if you’ve ever seen the state that ballet dances feet are constantly in- I believe we would see a natural enhanced movement, not forced and exerting extreme strain on the muscular skeletal system

Dressage looks beautiful but it makes me very sad that they put the horses neck in such an unnatural position (tucked toward their chest). Watch horses that are loose and free and they don’t do this.

This horrible event, PLUS one horse had to be put down after an incident in the cross country event. So sad things like that still happen... 😔 It really is about time to either really closely control, watch and punish what is happening in horse sports, or get rid of it alltogether at this level. The more money and prestige is involved, the more abuse happens. This has to stop.

Also are judges to blame for scoring high numbers when even we can see whats wrong. Thats why this is still going on.

Dressage needs to go more towards freedom riding and not this abusing horrifying painful methods!
