Equine images with Crispin Johannessen, part 4: Farewell Falsterbo

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

At Epona.tv, we don't just know that we're not welcome at horse shows. We also know why. We know because years ago, show organisers, stewards and riders used to be honest enough to admit that they didn't want us to show the ugly images from the warm up. Eventually, they learned not to say that. It doesn't sound like a very good reason to prevent journalists from doing their jobs, and major media outlets were becoming interested by all the secrecy. So the sport invented a new reason: Broadcasting rights. The IOC tried it in 2012. The FEI European Dressage Championships tried it in 2013.
In 2017, Falsterbo Horse Show decided to introduce a hasty photo ban when it became clear that Epona.tv was documenting what was happening in the warm up arena. Here's the story of how we managed to get thrown out by the police for simply showing the world what equestrian sport really looks like.

I have not been able to watch dressage for over 10 years. What I see in this video is exactly why. This isn't dressage - it's abuse. I feel so bad for the horses 😢❤

It's the same for me with show jumping - I'm a show jumper, my horse gets love-hearts in his eyes when he sees anything "jumpable" and is a superman in speed events. We both LOVE to show jump. And yet, I can't watch show jumping events that are broadcast on KZread channels, because the abuse, lack of riding skill, lack of readiness of horses for the level they're competing, and the horses not enjoying themselves like they should be, the block 'n' tackle bits and sadistic mechanisms they use on the poor horses... It's all disturbing and distressing to try and look at. It's tragic that we can't even watch our beloved sport because of the show of sadism it's become... and the bastards are all trying to keep it hush hush. But it's even more tragic for the horses, having to endure what they do.

When I was a teenager, I left my regular lesson barn which closed in the fall to take dressage lessons over the winter. I took everything in from my new instructor without question, mostly because nothing was really explained, just ordered. When I returned to my old lesson barn next spring, very first ride, my normally very kind instructor had a melt down and told me to DROP my reins IMMEDIATELY. After asking where I had ridden over the winter (and nodding knowingly) she explained to me in no uncertain terms that warm up is for long, low riding to loosen the horses muscles and prepare them for riding. Unbeknownst to me I had been holding my horse's head in ridiculously short (yet still not rollkur), but it just felt so normal to me because its what I had been trained to do (my other instructor was always after me to shorten my reins). One of the most mortifying yet enlightening moments of my life. I was a kid, but these riders should darn well know better by this stage in their career. The fact that this is allowed to go on is completely unacceptable. 💔

OMG you had me crying. I have been following the controversies and discussions around what is FLAGRANT ANIMAL ABUSE in the sport of dressage as you have so effectively photographed and documented . I admire and stand with you for EVERYTHING you are doing for these magnificent equines who want nothing more than to please but the look of pain in their eyes shows confusion and despair This has to stop ! It is time for ALL Professional dressage equestrians to stand up and take responsibility for the sport. You either stand against this abuse AND SAY SO or your silence shows acceptance. Time for # movement for the horse ! 🐴❤️ from 🇨🇦

So scared of their lack of actual talent being exposed. Where’s the ‘relaxation’ that’s part of the training scale? Horses are capable of dressage movements even without a bridle at all, so this level of force and misused gadgets can only be seen as hideous. Disgusting behaviour from the show organisers. Thanks for helping to expose this sort of thing.

2023 and nothing much has changed. Horses are used and abused for a variety of 'reasons'. Dressage like this, racing worldwide and tradition like you see with the UK's Royal Guards whose heavily bridled horses are constantly uncomfortable, shaking their heads, ears back at the idiot tourists, pawing and moving on the spot as asking a horse to stand still for hours is unnatural and cruel. But the late Queen Elizabeth 2nd said it must be so, and so it is. And we dont question tradition, do we? Shame, King Charles, shame.

I am not a dressage rider but I do some low level dressage with my green hunter. I cannot even fathom how dressage enthusiasts tolerate this deviation of riding technique and really think it is excusable. Every sport has its bad actors for sure, but this is very prevalent in dressage by its definition should be the least impacted by "bad riding".

Bless you for what you are doing by exposing their cruelty to an animal that does not have a choice. If they did have a choice they would most certainly not be there. THese so called elite horse riders feel they have every right to do whatever it takes to to force the horse to comply or submit no matter the cost. HOrses are extremely sensitive and smart and if you really know anything about them you would not have to use these harmful methods to train them. Educate yourself no reason for this treatment in this day and age. How arrogant they are!!! Put a dressage bit in the riders mouth and apply pressure for hours at a time and see if this changes their mind. THese horses are GOD'S creatures keep that in mind while training them.

Now the riders seem to be trying to force their horses with very little rider talant. The only thing that changed is that they are now aware of the changing public perception and they are conceiling the abuse. Conceiling is not eliminating. The reality of the business has no space for improving welfare. They went too far. No empathic rider who actually knows how to ride can make it to the top. This will not change as long as horse dealers are running the sport and churning huge money.
