IS250 Cluster Needle Led Fix Change

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This method can also be used for other Lexi Toyota that have the optitron needles. You will need a flat and a posi screw driver. Some LED's , a soldering iron and a skilled hand at soldering.

    Very well done video. The 0603 LEDs were extremely tiny--I had to use micro tip tweezers and some helping hands with a light. It looks amazing, though. A couple things that helped me: I used two long breadboard jumper wires (24AWG) to pull the needles out (took 5 seconds vs the 5 mins of trying to pull with my fingers); I used a 3 AA battery box to test the polarity of the SMD LEDs (mount with positive facing the top of the needle); put tape between the clear plastic and the circuit board to prevent melting the clear plastic; and you'll need a long and slim soldering tip to reach the LED closest to the base of the needle. Also, when you put the needle back on, the needle should be one tick below zero to hit zero when powered on. Please note, I initially had a hard time hitting zero, but I realized I could start a little higher and gently twist counterclockwise to get to the right spot. Thanks for hitting all of the critical information.

    Thanks for video. I changed my LEDs successfully , but when I reinstalled my tach needle it now reads 750 rpm too low. Have you (or anyone reading this) worked out a way to correct this issue if it occurs?

  • @Hacksome

    Buddy Johns I would recommend taking the needle out again and reinserting it in 750 rpm in opposite direction. I didn't face this problem but some guys on clublexus forum did, so it is not completely unheard off.

    Thanks Taimur. I have a bit of OCD and felt like I had to fix it NOW! Here's what I did and what I think will work for others: 1. My RPM needle was reading too low. This means that (in my case) the needle mount needed to be moved clockwise on the motor that drives the needle. 2. The motor does not rotate 360 degrees, so it has some sort of mechanical stop. Additionally, there is a coupler on the back end of the needle receptacle that mates the needle to the motor that acts as a friction clutch. This clutch will allow the needle mount to be rotated about the axis of the motor once the motor has reached its mechanical stop. 3. So, to set the RPM (or speedometer), the needle mount must be adjusted. To do so, simply remove the needle and rotate the needle mount (in my case clockwise, if the RPM was high, then I'd rotate it counter-clockwise) with your fingers until it reaches the mechanical stop and then continue to rotate it for another "750 RPM." You should feel some slight resistance as the clutch slips. It doesn't take much force (I did it with just the tip of my finger). 4. Obviously, it's hard to tell if you've moved it the correct amount, so to test it, move the needle mount counterclockwise by about 90 degrees (or 90 degrees clockwise if you are correcting a "too-high" reading) and re-insert the needle and gently rotate the needle back to the 0 RPM (or 0 MPH) position. If you moved it the correct amount, the motor's mechanical stop will be aligned with 0. 5. Finally, plug the cluster back in and start the car. The initial needle sweep should begin at exactly 0 and rotate fully around clockwise and then settle back on the correct reading. If the sweep does not start at 0, then repeat the process, moving the needle in the appropriate direction to correct the error. In "step 4" I mention rotating the needle mount 90 degrees before reinserting the needle. This is to prevent you from hitting the mechanical stops on the motor when reinstalling, which would introduce error. I think this may be the reason that some folks have experienced this issue to begin with. If you remove OR replace the needle when the indicator is near one of the stops it's likely that you'll cause the clutch to slip slightly, introducing error. I plan to fine tune my readings by using Torque (the OBD-II App for Android). Hope this helps someone.

    Taimur, by using the 0603 LED's as replacement, do you still retain the capability of dimming the needles with the dimmer switch?

  • @Hacksome

    @Hacksome

    Yes the dimming still works and 0603 are easier to solder than PLCC-2 ones used in the pin
