Is your Magic Mat Warped? FIX IT in less than 5 minutes!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I love die cutting with my Gemini Junior... especially since I got my first Magic Mat a year ago. It's great at keeping my regular hard plastic plates from warping. But what do you do when the Magic Mat warps? Check out this video to see how I fix it in less than 5 minutes!

UPDATED VIDEO COMING SOON! I know that the background is a bit too loud and distracting. I've been informed repeatedly over the last 2 years since it was published, and have listened to it myself. I do plan on doing an new updated video soon. Please mute your audio and turn on captions for a better experience. (I hope you'll understand... I was fighting with breathing issues and tried to mask the long pauses and poor sound of my own voice when providing this information to you. Recent videos do NOT have this sound issue.) Also, feel free to check out my blog for more information, without the background music. Blog: bit.ly/3IiBIvy

I put my magic mat in the oven on 250 degrees. I use parchment paper on the rack. I leave them in for about 5 mins or so. When they are removed from the oven make sure they lay flat on a heat resistant surface. I also put them in the refrigerator when they are barely warm to cool completely. Bring to room temperature before using. It is easier then using your heat tool. I love these mats. They have saved me a ton of money.

great idea... but you may want to use a crafting dedicated oven or toaster oven to do this. The chemical reaction of the pvc plastic being heated may cause dangerous fumes that I suspect could be transferred to your food. You may want to double check with Scrapbook.com to see if it's safe to do. They recommended using the heat it tool. If they say it's ok, safety wise, I think it's an awesome idea and you can do other stuff while the magic mats are heating... and you could do more than one at a time! 🤯🤯

Thanks so much Jo! I heard a lot of complaints from folks about how the magic mat warped... but that's what it was supposed to do since it was absorbing most of the pressure that had been going into our clear plates. And it was designed to let us flatten it back out. Neither the Magic Mar nor the clear plates will last forever... but they definitely last a LOT longer now, and I do a LOT more die cutting than I used to.

Thank you for this helpful demonstration. I'm beginning to wonder if, with care, I could flatten my self-heal cutting mats with my ordinary laundry iron on a medium setting without steam and use a soft cloth over the top of it to stop scorching or sticking. Might take a little bit longer than 5 minutes but would provide a larger heated surface and some pressure at the same time.Once warmed it could be placed under a heavy weight to cool down and 'set'. Just a thought ... xx

maybe. just use caution. this works with the magic mat due to the PVC Formula they use. my hubby is an engineer, so I'm slowly learning something new... like that they can react differently to heat. But there is nothing wrong with experimenting... as long as you are prepared for a fail. (discovered that my gemini foil press can't handle as high of heat as my spellbinders glimmer system... the gemini foil press platform warped, cracked and had to be replaced.) Good Luck!

@@DebbieJsCraftingCorner that’s what I used for mine as well! Sometimes it’s so much easier to use the smaller mats. I had ordered two extra the day that I flattened that one so that I had extra just in case.

lol. I have extras too. When I'm die cutting, I don't want to have to stop to flatten them out. So having spares is a great idea. Plus these will eventually wear out too... especially if you do a LOT of die cutting.

Great demo. I haven't done this with mine yet. Unfortunately haven't crafted in awhile so I don't need to flatten mine yet. But will definitely try this when I do. I've seen some others do this. I only have an embossing gun. Do you know the wattage of your heat it? I have a 1200 watt blue dryer brush wand thingy I got for moving alcohol ink. Might have overshot that but we'll see.

Do you use heat gun on high or low?

  • @DebbieJsCraftingCorner

Scrapbook.com recommends using the Heat it tool... it only has one temp, so I don't know. I would recommend trying low heat first though. It really depends on how hot "high" heat is on your heat gun. You could ask Scrapbook.com to make sure though

HI SO, I AM A REVISED BEF=GINNER SEWER AND I AM TAKING SEWING CLASS. WELL I USED MY NEW IRON WITH A TOWEL TO IRON MY T-SHIRT SLEEVES. NOW I SEE A SIGN THAT SAID DO NOT PUT HEAT ON THE CUTTING MAT, SO NOW IT LOOKS LIKE A COUPLE OF SHORT HUMPS. HOW CAN I MAKE IT FLAT AGAIN?😁 Reply

it really depends on the mat... you may want to contact the manufacturer to see if they have any suggestions. The mats that I used in this video are the Magic Mat from Scrapbook.com and are made specifically to use in place of cutting plates in your diecutting machine. The PVC plastics that were used in manufacturing react well to a little heat and allows them to flatten back out and extend the life of the mat. Other cutting mats may use different materials and may not work the same when heated. If the manufacturer doesn't have a suggestion, you may be stuck with a warped craft mat, or need a replacement. All mats are not the same.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll check into it... I've never had any issues related to this couple of minutes of heating the plastic. I hate to say it, but I think my breathing issues were due to stress. I'm doing much better now. This video was recorded about 2 years ago. ~big hugs!
