Is Your Engine Oil Contaminated? Learn the Warning Signs Before It's Too Late!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ever wonder if your car's engine oil is still up to the task? Knowing the signs of contaminated oil can save you from costly repairs and keep your engine running smoothly. In this video, we'll show you what to look out for, so you don't have to guess.
Engine oil is the lifeblood of your car's engine, ensuring all moving parts are lubricated and operating efficiently. However, over time, oil can degrade and become contaminated, leading to various engine problems. Manufacturers often suggest oil change frequencies in terms of months or miles driven, but the reality is different for every driver. Your driving style significantly impacts how quickly your engine oil degrades.
Questions Answered in This Video:
How can you tell if your engine oil is contaminated without inspecting it?
What engine noises indicate degraded oil?
How does engine temperature relate to oil quality?
What does the smell of oil inside your car signify?
Why does oil color change, and what does it mean?
How can you use test strips to check your oil?
Key Points Covered:
Engine Noises: Increased friction from degraded oil can make your engine louder or cause knocking sounds. If your engine oil isn’t lubricating effectively, it will increase wear and tear, changing the engine's noise. A louder engine or severe knocking often means significant components have worn out due to poor lubrication.
Overheating: If your car runs hotter than usual, it might be time for an oil change. Increased friction inside the engine causes it to overheat. You might notice the temperature gauge oscillating between normal and slightly above normal. Overheating is a red flag for oil issues.
Oil Smell: Smelling oil inside the car often indicates a leak or burning oil. This is not normal. The oil should stay contained within the engine. If you smell oil, it could be due to an oil leak, the engine burning oil, or the engine overheating the oil.
Oil Color: Fresh oil is translucent and brown; dark or milky oil signals contamination. Initially, the oil appears as a clear, amber color. As it degrades, it turns black. In diesel engines, oil can become very dark. A milky, mayonnaise-like appearance suggests coolant contamination or condensation buildup, signaling serious issues like a faulty head gasket.
Fuel Economy: A drop in fuel efficiency can be due to increased engine friction from bad oil. When engine oil degrades, it causes components to work harder, reducing fuel economy. More fuel is used to overcome the friction, creating more heat and worsening the situation.
Check Engine Light: This can be a critical indicator of low oil pressure or oil quality issues. If the check engine light comes on, it indicates a severe problem that needs addressing. It could be low oil pressure or poor lubrication, often related to oil quality.
Exhaust Smoke: Black or blue smoke may mean the engine is burning oil, which needs urgent attention. Burning oil produces distinctive smoke colors. If you notice this, it’s often too late for a simple oil change to fix the issue.
Oil Inspection: Use the dipstick to check oil color and clarity. Fresh oil is clear; dark or milky oil indicates contamination. Test strips can detect fuel, water, or metal particles in the oil. For the best analysis, send your oil to a lab.
Lab Analysis: Professional lab analysis gives precise insights into your oil's condition. It can tell you how much service life your oil has left and recommend change intervals based on your specific driving style and engine conditions.
Dirty engine oil can clog the filter, restricting oil flow and causing the oil pump to struggle. This increases heat and further degrades the oil, creating a vicious cycle. Regular checks and timely oil changes are crucial for maintaining engine health.

Good to see you are on it when it comes to oil. Do you do short journeys much or a mix of driving in that?

Thks, great Video. Also consider if the car is diesel and has a DPF, regular Regens will contaminate oil with fuel and dirt(soot etc) whilst trying to clean the DPF (Filter). Idling or regular short Journeys will mean more carbon build up, consequently more frequent oil & oil filter change..

Very important point. I don't think people realize that regular short tips = SEVERY DUTY oil change interval. Yet, look at any service book and you'll find that it is - at best - done at the normal interval.

Love your videos ( from the USA ). Where i live the car culture is lifted pick up trucks with big mud tires or very old American cars with candy paint and super large wheels 22” and bigger… so having a 2015 Audi TTS competition Pkg ( Imola Yellow ) stands out of the crowd and from my understanding it’s quite rare. As you stated in other videos … you can make specific content specific to a viewer. I’m new this car so I’m listening to all your videos featuring VAG so I can have a broad knowledge of this type of vehicle. Would like to see more recent videos talking on the Audi TTS 8J MK2. It’s weak points. It’s areas to be concerned of . Also would like to know if catch cans are needed even for a simple stage 1 ecu tune or not. Maintenance and so forth. ( EA113 engine last generation before the MK3 Audi ). 🙂 Keep up the great vids and thanks 🙏

I didn't really take good care of my first cars, but over the years I have learned much about the importance of oil so probably sound like a worn record now. I have a video on oil dilution coming up soon so keep an eye out for that one.

I mean if I started to smell engine oil inside the car I'd be screaming and panicking let alone thinking "is this normal?" haha, great video!

I change the oil in my 2015 Passat TDI when the info panel tells me Im done to 5% oil life left. For me thats usually around 7k to 7.5k miles, and I drive a mix of in town, highway and interstate in the US. Always use the Euro spec Mobil 1 for the TDI, but am open to suggestions for the best oil possible.

I just changed engine oil and serviced on my friends vw1.9 car he claims they last for ever . The last time it was serviced was when he bought it over 3 years 48k miles ago . Mmm only well know for long lasting it looked after . Could tell the engine sounds a bit quieter after oil/filter replaced . Wasn’t sluggish if that was 30years ago the would be like tar after that time millage .

I keep saying this and I will continue to say it regardless of what some idiots think-motor oil is cheap compared to an engine rebuild or replacement. DO NOT listen to these moron car manufacturers that say extended oil change intervals are fine, change your motor oil every 3000-5000 miles depending on the engine type and how it runs. These 10,000 mile oil change intervals is the biggest scam ever, your engine will sludge up and fail eventually if you do this to any engine( diesel engines are the exception ). My 2011 Honda Accord euro has a K-24 engine in it with 260,000 kilometres on the odometer, the oil in it has been changed every 5000 kilometres since new and it uses no oil,the oil stays clean and engine runs like it’s new. The other thing is don’t use cheap motor oil and filters, always use good quality motor oil and filters.
