Is Trent Alexander-Arnold A Midfielder?

Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of Liverpool’s best playmakers. For the past two season, he has been amongst the highest assisters. He has a range of passing that is unrivalled in his Liverpool team, and maybe even the Premier League. He finds himself in attacking positions more often than defensive ones. And Gareth Southgate has even played him at Centre Midfield for England.
So, is he really a midfielder.
Explained by JJ Bull.

one of the reasons why Klopp was playing Elliot so much and why losing him is important is that he is more of a natural winger and is much slicker on the ball than Hendo. So Elliot both be a playmaker if he stays tucked in or he can move out wide and Trent can tuck in and make things happen. You can see this perfectly in Mane's goal against Burnley. Elliot took up a very wide position along the touchline, and Trent tucked in centrally where no defender was looking for him. Van Dijk then played that long diagonal ball out to Elliot who chested it down and ran at the defense. He quickly made that pass central to Trent who dinked it around the corner for Mane to finish. That kind of goal wouldn't happen with Hendo in there because he would have been playing much narrower and not as far forward. That kind of tricky interchanging is more natural to a guy like Elliot and Trent than for Hendo.

to be fair to Trent, he's only in that position because he starts walking back from the edge of Burnley's penalty area after Liverpool lose possession. The lad isn't even pretending he's got defensive duties lol. The shape of the team as VVD receives the ball from Hendo is ridiculous. Like if they weren't entirely world-class you'd think they were sunday league with their positioning. Absolutely wild football from Klopp.

@@Longblade13 That's because Klopp's philosophy focuses on extremely direct football. If they have they ball, they attack attack attack and if they can't carry the ball then either Van Dijk or Matip will put a long ball in for someone farther up to collect and then take it from there. This relies a lot on having very good defenders, but also on the attacking players being farther up than say in a Pep team.

All I'd add, but it's early days, is he's underlapping a lot more into central areas this season, and then staying there for a long time, leaving Liverpool with almost a back 3 of Matip, VVD & Fabinho. His avg positions map this season is way different to prior seasons, but you pointed out his relationship with Salah changing this year. It's a minor point, but essentially he's often operating as a midfielder with soujourns to RB now, as opposed to the other way around.

Great video showing the role and explaining TAA new role as such. But, being a Liverpool fan watching this happen is frustrating. The only time the movement inside and Salah staying wide has worked was in midweek against AC Milan for the first goal. But, when TAA comes inside into midfield and having Salah pinned to the wing is tough to watch. I want to see Salah inside and TAA on the wing or slightly more inside to provide to Salah and make 1-2's or cross to the back post. Against Chelsea, it was so easy to nullify TAA move into midfield during the game as our best finisher (Salah) was stuck on the wing while TAA was wasting passes. It was easy for Chelsea to contain the threat especially putting pressure on TAA which he can't handle in midfield. Personally, I hope this isn't a regular thing this season as Salah is the bigger goal threat and we want him scoring goals not TAA moving into that space wasting passes. Just my opinion.

Pushing a inside forward goal threat out wide isnt a bad thing you know. Pep guardiola used it to great effect with raheem sterling (yes ik u liverpool fans hate him whatever). Pushing an excellent dribbler like salah out wide stretches the pitch and also puts the full back in a dilemma (to go after salah and leave the half spaces gaping open or go after trent and leave liverpools best player open). In addition, with liverpools direct passing and with andy robertson on the other side its very possible that salah will end up one on one against a full back and u know very well how that ends up. Thats also how grealish destroyed arsenal. Man city kept isolating their full back against grealish who managed to beat their full back many times to create chances

Our third midfielder, supported by two from Henderson, Fabinho, Jones and Milner, needs to be the creative-in-tight-spaces type. Wijnaldum was that. Shaqiri was kinda that. Thiago does that and more. Keita too, albeit maddeningly inconsistently. If Trents close control and dribbling were better he’d have seen midfield time under Klopp i’m sure, but for the now, “if it ain’t broke...”, and we have literally Tsimikas, Williams, Milner and tumbleweeds as cover at fullback, so putting Trent in the midfield means opening a new can of worms at rightback.

Trent and Robertson are the main creator because their Crosses accuracy & how much they could bend the ball is main factor that they low cross or cross inside the Final 3rd for someone to head it in and or tap in. I don't know why people make this fuzz about someone who is good at Crossing and Passing ability need to play in Midfield role. There is a Manager who dictate your game that's why system works and don't work. For the sake of Trent is better in Crossing means he should play at Mid then you are the problem to think like that.

Yes. remember 442? how there were wide midfielders in the midfield line that provided width in attack but stayed out of the center? remember 343? where the wide midfielders drop into the back line to form a 5? Modern fullbacks are both of those players. In defense they drop into the back line and in attack they provide the width in their teams.

He plays more as a right midfielder position wise. He also started off as a midfielder . His rb role doesn't fit England Systen , he isn't great at one on one duels . He is below average tackler . He doesn't have great positioning and vvd covered most of this . Now in the opposition half he is completely world class. A better attacking right back than Hakimi and Kimmich when he plays right back. He can literally do it all in the attacking half . Make great overlapping runs , create from right midfield ,has great interplay at the edge of the box and he is an excellent freekick taker. The reason doesn't fit the system is the way England midfields operates . They gave different assignments, Liverpool deep lying midfielders stretch to cover up for wingbacks . Robertson doesn't push up as high as much , plus he has far better recovery speed. A better tackler and very good at one on one tossles. England deep lying midfielders are different . They operate in the middle of the field and occasionally move up field to stop counters, so they require overlapping full backs to run back on defense. This Arnold can't operate as freely , and on defense Arnold basically goes from being worldclass to average . He has the energy to play it , but unless England caters to Arnold he won't fit their system . So where will I play him as coach, I'll play him as a 10 with a free roam so he can drift Central or even wide when he wants. I'll also play him with grealish on the right wing , grealish is comfortable drifting around the box 18 . Then I'll shift mount back to the no 8 spot . 🤷🏿‍♂️

TAA is world class going forward, but average at best as a defender. Even Klopp has admitted that. In my view, he’s a right winger being played at right back. And that has proved to be a defensive weakness this season(22/23). Although Southgate gave him try-out mid-field, it was clear TAA’s heart wasn’t in it and not surprisingly the experiment didn’t work.

yes but Klopp literally doesn't care. He has so much confidence in Matip and Fabinho's ability to deal with balls played into that area, and he's exploiting that like crazy. Typically when Hendo & Trent get that high they are already squeezing the opp back into their own third, so any counter-attacking ball is played to space, a CF that Matip is tracking, or maybe the LM that Fabinho will come across to slow down until they can get back into a defensive shape.

One thing Trent isn't is a willing, happy or reliable England player. These days it's clear that he hates getting call-ups and doesn't want the shirt, whatever he once thought about it conceptually back in 2017 or whatever. Hendo must be forcing him to turn up. Watch Trent in training, he's barely engaged. Unsure why--Southgate? Having to defend so deep? That half the time he's the only Scouser/LFC player there? (Coady & Hendo are ageing out). Maybe he should decline to play in next squads (post World Cup), or switch nationalities if he's able.

It really puzzles me then why Klopp questioned Southgate's decision to play him as an 8 and said if he would play in midfield, he'd be better as a 6. Klopp already plays him as an 8 in a lot of ways, and takes up similar positions to that of Kevin de Bruyne when he plays that right free 8 role. I personally think Alexander-Arnold has a real future as an 8, at least in the England set-up (Walker imo is such a nice player to have, as his recovery runs and overall dominance in 1v1 situations make him a must-have in the starting 11.) A mid 3 of Rice (or someone else?, idk if Rice us complete enough to play as a lone 6) with Mount and TAA has real potential. Alongside a RW like Saka, who's equally comfortable hugging the touchline as he is drifting inside, you could accomplish a similar positional rotation between those 2 at least. Also, TAA passing ability makes him a terrific outlet for quick counterattacks with England's immense quality in the attacking areas.
