    Marketing. From what I've heard, this movie was really expensive to make and they already had plans for a sequel. Disney didn't wanna use that kind of money so they intentionally botched this movie's marketing and basically made sure it would flop so there wouldn't be a reason to make a sequel.

    theres like 1000 video essays breaking it down. Primarily production issues , poor marketing , not really having the audience for this kinda movie (remember 2002 is the same year they released ice age , air bud and lilo and stitch so they were still very very tame inside the box stuff compared to this) , issues with cg integration that looked worse then all its coutnerparts at the time , the list goes on and on and on , the movie unfortunately was doomed even before release. Not just that but if you take off the nostalgia glasses the writing in this movie is extremely poor , despite it being based on a world famous book that did become a near billion dollar franchise with several adaptions , movies and etc

    On the one hand I really need more from Atlantis and Brother Bear; they both would probably be in my top ten, top twenty at least (I like a _lot_ of movies). On the other hand that would likely lead to wringing the concepts dry and trying to produce further, thereby making terrible movies and staining the better ones. (cough cough Alpha and Omega)

  • @Justmyhandle

    @Justmyhandle

    16 күн бұрын

    @@Ignore14 *Some trivia:* At one point in early development, 1988's Oliver & Company was planned as a loose sequel to 1977's The Rescuers. To the best of my knowledge, I don't believe any version of this premise involved Bernard and Miss Bianca returning but the story was set in the same universe and might have referenced them. The plot would have centered on an older Penny as the main protagonist living with her new adoptive family in NYC after being saved from Madame Medusa. Oliver the kitten was originally more of a secondary character that Penny (much like Jenny Foxworth) would befriend and help save, possibly with help from the Rescue Aid Society. This narrative never got far enough to flesh out many details, but it's possible that the dog character who would become Dodger was written as a member of the Rescue Aid Socity's New York branch and would have cooperated with Penny alongside other new animal characters. By the end, Penny would've adopted Oliver. Thematically, this story could have been considered a sort of inverse of The Rescuers with the human leading the mission to save an animal this time. Penny would also carry on the spirit of Bernard & Bianca's example, keeping that cycle of courageous good will going by doing for Oliver what they did for her. It was a sweet concept. Disney quickly shot the idea down, deciding that this movie would be more marketable to kids with the kitten and dog as its stars. Hence, the final product cut any connections to The Rescuers with Oliver & Dodger becoming the focus while Penny was rewritten into Jenny (Personality-wise, they're practically the same character anyway). From a business POV, Disney may have simply wanted this film to be sold and succeed as its own thing. After all, Oliver & Company was an ambitious project for its time, not only representing Disney's return to the musical format after seven years but also being their first film to integrate a heavy amount of computer animation.

    That must be the dumbest STM title ever. Of course Treasure Planet is an underrated gem. It came out the same year as the successful 2D animated Disney film "Lilo & Stitch" and it bombed so hard that it, DW's "Sinbad" and Disney's own "Home on the Range" contributed to the death of 2D animated films--until it was briefly revived for "The Princess and the Frog", which sadly performed below expectations and the failure of 2011's "Winnie the Pooh" put 2D animation back in the ground. And then 2022 came around with the Bob's Burgers movie and that also bombed. Also, do you mean to tell me they got so bored with the movie that there's no sign off?? They resort to rambling about bs near the end with bs Deadpool references? Disappointing bs.

    For anyone interested youtuber Breadsword dd a pretty good video essay on this movie and one of the points he theorised was, that despite everything Disney sort of set up the movie to flop.... It released on the same holiday opening weekend of the first Harry potter movie, a James bond flick and Disney had another live action santa/holiday slop around the time. It also had awful marketing with a lot of it just sort of giving everything away (ignoring the fact some people could argue that Treasure Island is pretty well known source material). There are also some theories with higher-up changes such as them having several changes in chairmen at the time maybe impacted the movie in some way. It was also in those early 2000s years of Disney transitioning away from 2d animation before fully committing to 3D. There was also plans of a possible sequel with Willem Dafoe voice acting and a possible TV series that was canned.

    The movie failed because Disney willingly sabatoged it. Bad marketing and pitting it up against Harry Potter and another Disney movie. It’s the saddest. Love this movie. @@punksnotdead5367 I looked it up and DAMN did they have issues. Personally, I don’t think you need to have nostalgia for this movie because of the focus they put on Jim and his father. It may not be like this for everyone, but the whole idea of Jim finding a replacement for something he lost, and that being reflected with the Treasure Planet really strikes cords in a lot of people. It’s a great movie to help children cope with parents abandoning them, and I think that’s timeless
