I own two of them. Stumbled across an Epiphone Les Paul Goldtop at my LGS when I was in high school that was about two weeks old and being sold used. Still one of the best Les Pauls I've ever played (and yes, I have played a few and own a Gibson). That guitar was it for me for sooo long. But then there was that dream guitar. The one I'd never be able to afford. It was a Paul Reed Smith Custom 22, circa 2002 when I first played one. And last year I bought a 2002 Paul Reed Smith Custom 22 10-top and it's my most prized possession. The two of them get (almost) equal playing time... Along with my other 5 guitars.

Had to sell my beloved PRS custom 24 in a 2009 25th Anniversary limited edition when I was at a real bad financial place a few years back. I regret selling it ever since, especially because they went for around $1.700 used at that time because nobody really was interested in that model then and now they are worth more than the original retail price. They looked, sounded and played just awesome. Gosh I miss this guitar so much!

I used to have a PRS that was the guys from 3 doors down signature, in all honesty it was a SC250 with just his personal choice of colors, which was an amazing orange! I got it for a steal because it was a showcase model that had been retired to be put up for sale, and also because it was that guys signature not a lot of people wanted it lol. It was the best playing guitar I’ve ever owned, still regret selling it.

Hey mate, very good video. I also have this PRS Singlecut from 2000s with #7th pickups. When I was a kid, I listened to Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback, Three Days Grace, Linkin Park, etc, and they all played PRS guitars either Singlecuts, or Custom 22s. I was astonished by how beautiful those guitars were and also I like the sound. Year ago I finally was able to purchase a PRS and I checked both custom 22 and singlecut models, like the last one more. It sounds massive, infinite sustain. Plugging into Rectifier gets you close to that early 2000 Nu-metal / post-grunge sound. Tune to drop D/C tuning and here you go. However, these pickups are so great, their dynamics allow you to roll the volume to 2-3 and get a clean sound even on a high-gain channel. That's crazy. Great for rock, blues, jazz, etc etc. Very versatile guitar. Stays in tune for weeks though I bend a lot. I recorded it in studio and it caused 0 headache to me like intonation along the fretboard, tuning stability, pickups hum, etc etc etc. People say it doesn't sound like a les paul, but..it should not, it's a different animal. Thank you for a great video and bringing back old memories :)

Neat guitar and backstory, cool song! Just wanted you to know I started uptuning because of your prior videos, mainly the Cannibal Corpse uptuned to A video. It gave me a hint to something that had been majorly bothering me for a while about certain Death Metal bands and albums, that it is really hard to actually make out what they are playing on certain riffs, Devourment's Molesting the Decapitated being a main offender for me. I decided to uptune for multiple reasons with one being to be able to hear every riff precisely. My main guitar right now is a First Act ME3061 21" Scale tuned either to Open F# or Open G tuning, with 5 strings only (no high E) and tuned somewhere of the proximity of 444-446 Hz I think (440 Hz is bunk) So basically I turned it into a Tenor Guitar! [UPDATE: I now tune this Tenor Guitar to Open A 432 Hz tuning because of intonation issues, I maxed out the saddle for the low E string and it still was off and I didn't want to move back the bridge so I tuned up until it was perfect, sounds great and even more 80's now!] Death Metal, Black Metal, Heavy Metal all sound great on this guitar, and I have been trying out Modern Rock (Crossfade, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin) Country, Jazz, Easycore and Ambient and all sound awesome! Turns out Open tunings are easy to use if you know what you are doing! Other tunings I have tried: F Standard 432 Hz, Drop E 432 Hz, G Standard 432 Hz (all uptuned obviously) (I also use a Mitchell MM-100 22.5" scale tuned to E Standard around 430-428 Hz, all the aforementioned genres sound great on this axe as well and it sounds heavy when I play it after my uptuned guitars!)

The "special" guitar for me is my 2006 Fender Showmaster, in Dark Cherry Burst. (That is the guitar in my icon.) Looking back, Showmasters were not even particularly GREAT guitars when compared to all the other "Super Strats" of the time. Even still, I lusted after the Dark Cherry Burst Showmaster. That is what started everything for me. I had planned to modernise mine as soon as the weather warmed enough to travel to and from the builder who was going to work on my Showmaster. And then COVID happened, and cancelled everything. Now, that builder is long gone, my Showmaster is STILL in pieces, and I have no idea if the lockdown will ever end....

I'm yet to find that special guitar. Currently only have a Squire Affinity Strat from...'06 I think? Maybe '05? I'd stopped playing for years after I kinda gave up when I was younger. Picked it back up back in October 2019 and i've already gone well past where I was when I stopped playing. Also appreciating how well the neck on this old thing feels. For a Chinese made sub £150 model in the obligatory 2 colour black/burnt orange burst, it's honestly surprising how nice the neck feels. Though I appreciate a hell of a lot more about guitars and sound in general nowadays than when I was 15.

One big thing you'll find is that if the gate keepers hate it and the kids love it. It's making a huge impact (Nickleback, Attack Attack, Suicide Silence, New Bring Me the Horizon for example) And at some point the gatekeepers will come back and scream that they loved it all along

My only guitar at the moment is a Fender HSS Strat, MiM Flame Maple Blueburst, the 21 fret limited edition one, before it got updated to 22 frets for the Player series. I like it a lot, but the fret radius is way too small for me to shred comfortably I'm used to the 10-16 inch radius of my old jackson soloist.

How do you like that wraparound tail piece? I'm looking at a couple of PRSs that have that but I'm not sure how much I'm going to like it coming from vintage trems and tune-o-matics.

I haven't quite found that guitar yet. Though the most connected I ever felt was with a charvel dk24 I demoed at a guitar store last year. Also played a SE Tremonti PRS that I really liked as well. I dream of getting a Kiesel custom made for myself one day. Or if we talk actual production guitars a Music Man jp15.

you don't find the wraparound bridge to be a nightmare for intonation? had a guy bring one of these into my studio once and we ended up not being able to use it because it just wouldn't intonate properly. my number 1 is a 2004 ibanez AXS32 (artist). i THOUGHT i saw it in a linkin park video and had to have it. turns out that was a PRS and my memory was fuzzy. but it was my second guitar and sometime after getting it music started to really click for me. it was my main instrument right up until my band moved to drop B and i switched to baritones. it's still a beast for studio work.

nickelback has always been and still is an amazing band. The internet is bashing them for absolutely no reason. one thing i was wondering with this kind of bridge is how do you even make any sort of adjustments with it? What if you wanna play in alternate tunings or use different string gauges, you would have to adjust the intonation, but i don't see any intonation screws on that thing.

I have the same bridge on my PRS Custom 22. Their quality control is so spot on, that once you use the edge screws on the bridge to intonate the high and low E strings, the rest fall into perfect intonation. The intonation screws are right behind the bridge posts, they are recessed so they are hard to see.

question: what is the benefit of inserting your strings the other way through the bridge then flipping it over the bridge? tuning is more stable?

  • @peteplaysmusic

Not sure, that’s just the way the bridge is designed. I definitely prefer this PRS style bridge over the Tunomatic style they use now on the Singlecuts though. Thanks for watching! :)
