Is THIS the Most Comfortable Bed?

We're building a bed of nails! What are the physics at play here? Will Grace puncture herself? Will it be weirdly comfortable? Let's find out!

    My dad, a high school physics teacher, goes a step further. He builds two, he lies on one, puts the second on top of him, so he is in a sandwich of sorts. Then he will put bricks on top of the second half and ask a student to break the bricks with a sledge hammer. He's done that experiment over two dozen times, and he always turns out fine.

    Some important things to consider when building a bed of nails: not all the nails in the box are going to be exactly the same length, so you want to digard any outliers; a pre-drilled base is definitely easier, but it's better to drill holes that the nails fit snugly in, nd use a slightly thicker base, so that there is less chance of wobble; do not use galvanized nails, because the coating can be a skin irritant.

    I’ve done this before they had one at a science museum. There was a plastic sheet that you would lay down on that had thousands of holes and then you would press a button and slowly the nails would pass through the holes so that you could get comfortable beforehand

    Being a drywall wall I kind of worried it would actually break, because drywall is not the strongest material, barely able to hold up it's own mass. By me running into a wall is not going to end well, because brick walls, and those nails, even with the sledge hammer, will simply be bent before they make it past the point into the brick.

    Stopped at 3:14 to make a pure guess at the outcome. I'm imagining that no matter how you sandwich the plywood board, those nails are going to be wobbly. If you lie down on them and they shift around -- some one way, some the other, and some still pointing up -- I'm guessing that would make for an uncomfortable nap. I'll see soon enough, I suppose.

  • @ftlPhysicsGuy

    @ftlPhysicsGuy

    Watched to the end... So, they're not all pointing straight up, and I'm guessing some of them might wobble. If they were nailed through a board and all the same height, it would distribute the weight more evenly. But, since Grace didn't mention them moving around, I guess I was wrong...

  • @giandeau

    @giandeau

    @@ftlPhysicsGuy no, you are right. It is preferable to predrill the holes (rather than hammer in the nails), so there is more consistency and structure to your bed.
