Is This the BEST Hiking Kettle? Expedition Research Kettle VS the Trangia Kettle
Get You Own PaleoHikerMD Patches HERE!: www.etsy.com/shop/PaleoHikerM... How much water can a kettle truly hold? Or more importantly, boil safely? Well, I'm always looking for new products from new companies, and a company I've found recently to put out great products is Expedition Research. I did a review last year on their amazing Bushcraft Cooking Grates, and now I'm taking a look at their Expedition Kettle! Let's see how it compares to the old standard, the Trangia Kettle.
We take a detailed look

Actually the trangia kettle was designed to make "kokkaffe", they boiled the coffe inside the kettle, and to contain the foam inside the kettle & prevent boilover, they make it taller.
Both the larger shape and the lack of a stuff sack in the Trangia are the result of the fact that it’s been made to hold an alcohol burner inside plus overall it’s meant to ride inside the larger cook system. To me they both seem like nice kettles.
The information you giveaway is super helpful and interesting!
Good video and straight-forward comparison. Like your balanced opinion and honest disclosure.
I got 3 minutes into this video and hopped over to Amazon and bought the ER. Thanks mate.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been contemplating getting a kettle. I’ll head over to Amazon and order the expedition one. I like the lower profile, the lid and stuff sack.
I've used Trangia kettles for over 50 years, love them. I learned early on about the lid trying to come off. What I do is when pouring is extend my middle finger to keep the lid on. I'm sure this technique will work well for the Expedition. I like the Expedition, the lower profile and having the stuff sack is nice to keep soot away for other gear if used over wood fires.
Outstanding review Ernie! very informative, really helped me make a decision on purchasing kettle!

Thanks, and thanks for watching!
Best giveaway ever :) The kettle is a LOT bigger than I thought. I learned to boil water and keep it in a water bottle b/t your legs when camping in the cold. Helps a LOT with a sleeping bag liner
Nice review .. thanks. Useful to those new to the Outdoor Discipline and looking for a first-time kettle, or seeking to replace one that has reached the end of it's service life. I have a little Aluminium Kettle that came as part of a 3 Pot Camping Kit. Bought .. the entire set .. over 20 years ago at the local Farm Co-Op for less than the current price of either of the kettles discussed. Takes my little White Box Stove / other Alcohol Burners and other Stuff without blinking and still going strong. One must beware of 'chasing the rainbow' .. one never catches it and can be an expensive journey. Also satisfying is having and using something that 'does the job' and .. is paid for 😊.
Congratulations on 10k subs. Great giveaway, very nice prizes. I will get that kettle. Thank you buddy. Tennessee
Just watched this video and was just about to click submit on buying the GSI Halulite Kettle. You have changed my mind, and the EP Kettle is way cheaper! Thanks. Subscribed to learn more from you!
Awesome giveaway. Congrats on 10k!
Good review. Practical factors of the product in use is the way I wish people would do their reviews (as you did here). Thank you for bringing this review to us. I'm looking at camp kettles and this one just made the final list.

Thanks man. I try to do reviews in the way I wish I could find them done! Thanks for watching.
My primary interest between the two kettles is if the hard anodized kettle leeches less aluminum into water and also if it might be more resistant to melting of put over the flames or coals of a fire? Still a good review though 👍🏻
Expedition Research gear is the Best. I have been using the grills for a while now and highly recommend them. I need to try their kettle now. Thanks for the Giveaway !
To stop the trangia lid from coming off i used a pair of taper nosed pliers to bend the inside lip out a little bit. The lid now clips into the kettle. You can easily vary how tight you want the lid to fit, and once you've done it that's it.
giveaway, thanks for the chance. this had been an awesome channel for reviews on gear
Great review! Thanks so much for the vid! Blessings BCB

thanks so much for watching!
I as graciously given a kettle by the owner as well (also unsolicited) and I haven’t been able to use it yet but it is truly lightweight and I loved the true 90* safe pour feature on the lid. And yes, the stuff sack is also really good quality. Can’t wait to finish this semester and get out into the woods with it! GIVEAWAY!

Congratulations on 10k subscribers. Nice GIVEAWAY prizes!
Good comparrison. Lid issue on Trangia is resolved by bending the flange slightly with pliers. If using the T with the T set it's size is perfect to store the burner in it's bag and the pot handle. If only buying as a separate kettle I can see the Expedition one has a few advantages. Would be interesting to know if this would work in a Trangia set, I bout the stainless GSI one having read it fitted and it did but not very securely, went back to the T.
GIVEAWAY!!!! Congratulations on 10k subscribers! Cool Kettle!
Wow, the trangia looks at lot larger.I like the stuff sack as it's usually coated in soot and don't want it to soil the rest of my pack.
Thanks for the chance
Just ordered one after watching this video. Thanks Ernie this was very helpful
New follower after watching your Wild Azalea trail video. Stayed for the giveaway!
I’m in for this too!
Second watch. ;-) GIVEAWAY! Edit: I correct myself, I've never watched this one. Great job on pointing out the capacity and giving this a great comparison.
G'day Ernie. Thank you for another awesome video. I also have a Trangia kettle, mine is the small one that come with the Trangia 27. Is yours the 27 or 25? I have filled the kettle a few times with water and have seen a visible grey scum of Aluminium Oxide on the surface, and hence have never actually used the kettle. The rest of the cook system I have is anodised, and I was a little annoyed that an anodised kettle is not available. Looking at the size comparison sitting side by side I am thinking the Expedition Research kettle could possibly be a great replacement for the Trangia kettle in the cok set. Please let me know if it fits, and which kit (25 or 27) you have? Thank you and best wishes.
Just bought a Norwegian stainless steel kettle. Eagle products. Sold through Badger Claw. Used by most Scandinavian militaries.
Very nice, actually I saw this when I ordered my trangia kettle but sadly can’t find it on Amazon now. My only question is will this fit in my trangia 27 kit?
Thank you
That spout design should make a significant difference when pouring very slowly. Like for pour over coffee where you're trying to be precise for example.
On the Trangia lid to stop it falling off when pouring just slightly bend out 10mm of the bottom of the lip that fits inside the kettle. Do that under the lid vent and then all you have to do is place the vent opposite to the spout
Very nice comparison, but I can't help but wonder if the so-called micro spout would possibly be better for pouring into a very small opening, like on an empty standard 16.9 oz/500 ml water bottle?
Hi, first many thanks for all your shairing, its much appreciated. A couple of things missed/not stressed enough.... The Expedition Research is Hard Anodised. Some of us, rightly or mistakenly are concerned about plain Aluminium (uk) so HA is of benefit. The other aspect, will the Expedition Research kettle nest in the Trangia 25 (? ) kit as a replacement. I am looking for a 27 kit replacement kettle any sugestions? ( I have ti pots already) Thanks again Take care Best regards Colin
GIVEAWAY! Thanks for the opportunity!
GIVEAWAY!!! Like expedition research. Cool stuff
Very nice comparison, my friend! -Dave

Thanks man, hope things are well up East!
Since this is an older video... do you still recommend this kettle over the Trangia one? Does this fit on the Trangia 25 or 27?
Giveaway! Thanks again Ernie!
Will the Expedition Research kettle work in the Trangia cookset?
Wow great Giveaway ! Congratulations on your 10000 subs, you have a wonderful channel, keep up the good work. I am from Ontario Canada and I will totally pay what is extra for you to ship this price if I win. Good luck all and good luck to me.
First rate film. Close race between the two, I think no right or wrong choice. But I wonder if the Expedition Research one wobbles with that loose when-upright handle when pouring hot liquids?
Hey nice review thanks for the video.. the expedition research kettle fit in the trangia 27 cook system?
@PaleoHikerMD
6 жыл бұрын
It will not, but it will likely fit in the 25 cook system. For my 27 system I have to use the 0.6L kettle to make it fit. Thanks for watching!
This is a classic better mouse trap There is no difference that makes a difference I prefer to be brand loyal and stay with Trangia And Trangia kettle fits into the 1.5 liter and 1.75 liter pots from the 25 set for the nesting set, so it saves space in your pack
Congrats again on 10k subs! GIVEAWAY
Giveaway! And great info, too.
Giveaway time. Thanks Ernie
Will this kettle nest with the Trangia 27?
Will that fit in the trangia 25 series? To replace trangias kettle. Thanks.
Will the ER kettle fit inside the Trangia 25? And if it does, can the alcohol stove fit inside?
what an amazing giveaway!!! looking for luck!!
Would love this. Giveaway!
Do you links for both of these? Thank you for this review, very informative.

Giveaway, awesome channel!
Exicited to win this on the GIVEAWAY!!!
I want something to boil water to make coffee, tea and Hot cocoa on an open fire in our yard at our farm. So I want something bigger. I want the lid to stay on. And it needs to go in a open fire. Any suggestions?
GIVEAWAY! Cool kettle! Thanks!
GIVEAWAY. Nice. Good luck to all.
Doesn't the kettle (trangia) fit inside the trangia cook set?
Nice kettle.
Will the trangia alcohol stove fit inside?
Where can I buy the expedition research kettle? cheers!
Does it fit in the trangia 25 kit?
Can the new kettle hold the Trangia cooker like the Trangia kettle?
I wonder how many of the Trangia grams were comprised of soot?
I bought a kettle years ago used it twice and seen no need for an extra item to just boil water. I just use a pot or my cup that serves many more uses than just a kettle. I mean it's cool and everything but why add the extra for water boiling?
I want that stove and fuel canister!
One could store lots of stuff inside even a sea-to-summit collapsible mug (pocket rocket, mug, spoon, iso(?), etc).
nice kettle. but I can"t carry it backpacking as I need to reduce weight. But as a toy for car camping, it is a very nice kettle and I would consider adding it to car camping trip
Good review. What metal is the older kettle? I would prefer stainless steel. I like them both. Thank you my friend, have a great day. Tennessee
Giveaway that kettle is super short i imagine it would be better to pack then the rest of them out there. As always be safe have a blessed day
Silicone never breaks down. Pollution or land fill forever. Can you please say where the products are made?
GiveaWaaaaaay!!!!
I use a Trangia 27 kettle and my problem with other kttles is that none of them are as small. I don't want or need a larger kettle than 0.6 litres.
Will this fit the trangia 25?
Thanks for the info...Giveaway!

Giveaway. Thanks again for all your videos.
Help me understand why I need a kettle to boil water. It seems to just be an unnecessary extra piece of gear. Why would one not just boil water in a pot which they probably already have and carry?
Do they still make this?
Giveaway. Keep up the good work.
Giveaway! Thank you!
Like the kettle and the video. Great giveaway hope I win.
