Is This the BEST Hiking Kettle? Expedition Research Kettle VS the Trangia Kettle

Get You Own PaleoHikerMD Patches HERE!: www.etsy.com/shop/PaleoHikerM... How much water can a kettle truly hold? Or more importantly, boil safely? Well, I'm always looking for new products from new companies, and a company I've found recently to put out great products is Expedition Research. I did a review last year on their amazing Bushcraft Cooking Grates, and now I'm taking a look at their Expedition Kettle! Let's see how it compares to the old standard, the Trangia Kettle.
We take a detailed look

    Actually the trangia kettle was designed to make "kokkaffe", they boiled the coffe inside the kettle, and to contain the foam inside the kettle & prevent boilover, they make it taller.

    Both the larger shape and the lack of a stuff sack in the Trangia are the result of the fact that it’s been made to hold an alcohol burner inside plus overall it’s meant to ride inside the larger cook system. To me they both seem like nice kettles.

    I've used Trangia kettles for over 50 years, love them. I learned early on about the lid trying to come off. What I do is when pouring is extend my middle finger to keep the lid on. I'm sure this technique will work well for the Expedition. I like the Expedition, the lower profile and having the stuff sack is nice to keep soot away for other gear if used over wood fires.

    Nice review .. thanks. Useful to those new to the Outdoor Discipline and looking for a first-time kettle, or seeking to replace one that has reached the end of it's service life. I have a little Aluminium Kettle that came as part of a 3 Pot Camping Kit. Bought .. the entire set .. over 20 years ago at the local Farm Co-Op for less than the current price of either of the kettles discussed. Takes my little White Box Stove / other Alcohol Burners and other Stuff without blinking and still going strong. One must beware of 'chasing the rainbow' .. one never catches it and can be an expensive journey. Also satisfying is having and using something that 'does the job' and .. is paid for 😊.

    My primary interest between the two kettles is if the hard anodized kettle leeches less aluminum into water and also if it might be more resistant to melting of put over the flames or coals of a fire? Still a good review though 👍🏻

    To stop the trangia lid from coming off i used a pair of taper nosed pliers to bend the inside lip out a little bit. The lid now clips into the kettle. You can easily vary how tight you want the lid to fit, and once you've done it that's it.

    Good comparrison. Lid issue on Trangia is resolved by bending the flange slightly with pliers. If using the T with the T set it's size is perfect to store the burner in it's bag and the pot handle. If only buying as a separate kettle I can see the Expedition one has a few advantages. Would be interesting to know if this would work in a Trangia set, I bout the stainless GSI one having read it fitted and it did but not very securely, went back to the T.

    G'day Ernie. Thank you for another awesome video. I also have a Trangia kettle, mine is the small one that come with the Trangia 27. Is yours the 27 or 25? I have filled the kettle a few times with water and have seen a visible grey scum of Aluminium Oxide on the surface, and hence have never actually used the kettle. The rest of the cook system I have is anodised, and I was a little annoyed that an anodised kettle is not available. Looking at the size comparison sitting side by side I am thinking the Expedition Research kettle could possibly be a great replacement for the Trangia kettle in the cok set. Please let me know if it fits, and which kit (25 or 27) you have? Thank you and best wishes.

    That spout design should make a significant difference when pouring very slowly. Like for pour over coffee where you're trying to be precise for example.

  • @nuthn2do
    @nuthn2do Жыл бұрын

    On the Trangia lid to stop it falling off when pouring just slightly bend out 10mm of the bottom of the lip that fits inside the kettle. Do that under the lid vent and then all you have to do is place the vent opposite to the spout

  • @fordhouse8b
    @fordhouse8b6 жыл бұрын

    Very nice comparison, but I can't help but wonder if the so-called micro spout would possibly be better for pouring into a very small opening, like on an empty standard 16.9 oz/500 ml water bottle?

    Hi, first many thanks for all your shairing, its much appreciated. A couple of things missed/not stressed enough.... The Expedition Research is Hard Anodised. Some of us, rightly or mistakenly are concerned about plain Aluminium (uk) so HA is of benefit. The other aspect, will the Expedition Research kettle nest in the Trangia 25 (? ) kit as a replacement. I am looking for a 27 kit replacement kettle any sugestions? ( I have ti pots already) Thanks again Take care Best regards Colin
