    I really like the GSI kettle for all the reasons you mentioned: the wide top opening and the one-piece stainless steel construction. No seams to leak. The bowls and cups are a nice bonus. I'll be using mine on our back patio when the electricity goes out this winter. Thank you for a wonderful review.

    We also have gear set aside for power outages. Does not happen often here but when it does it is a pain to have to start searching for things. Top of the list is a way to make coffee. Thanks for commenting

    A pot is a kettle without shoulders and a spout. I prefer a pot. That being said. Excellent comparison. I like that you noted the difficulty cleaning the rolled seam in the Pathfinder kettle. The wilderness is not a place where one should risk food poisoning.

    Ironically, back during the height of the Hudson's Bay Company when the fur trade up in Canada was booming; the company provided several "standard" (for lack of a better term) trade items to the fur traders who worked for the company. They would then take these items and trade them to the local Indian tribes for fur pelts. The Indians simply could not make metal items. A variety of certain items were always in demand by the various tribes. Among them were *kettles.* But not as we think of them now. Back then, a kettle was a very large pot for cooking food for numerous individuals at a time. Although very basic in shape, they were often big enough to be described as small to medium sized cauldrons. Which, for a pot, is rather huge. To address the elephant in the room, yes; quite a few Traders dealt with the Indians in bad faith. Often cheating them in various ways in order to acquire the fur pelts. One way was trading inferior items (in terms of quality). Or, counterfeit items. This caused quite a few tribes to refuse to barter with the independent Traders. However, they would always trade with those who worked for the Hudson's Bay Company. Often demanding that Traders not seen before present some sort of proof that they did indeed work for HBC. The company had a good reputation with the Indians for trading fairly with them.

  • @NGMonocrom

    A very good comparison. Was interested in the PathFinder kettle. But with a delicate inner strainer, I think the PF one loses it's main advantage over the GSI. The GSI is more expensive, but not by much. And, the extras it comes with are worth the increased price; at least for me. It's also nice that it doubles as a small pot. So no need to carry a separate pot and kettle into the outdoors. One could buy a small hand-held strainer and use that over the GSI insulated mug. Perhaps place the strainer into the mug and take out the plastic spork. Now you've got the same large advantage with the GSI that you have with the PF.

    What a great comparative observation on both kettles Mark !... I believe Dave Canterbury 's reasoning behind the double bale was so that it could easily be used with a toggle system that sits in between both bales and therefore creating more stability over a single bale.

    Great video Mark! I have the Pathfinder version and haven't had a chance to use it much, but so far I do like it. I have only used it a few times to make coffee (I cut a coffee filter down to size and stick it in the strainer) and steamed some veggies a couple of times. I haven't tried making any salves in it yet, but that's next on the list for my kettle. I really appreciate your insight into the two products!

    Great vid! I’ve had the aluminum gsi kettle for a long time and actually I’m surprised it’s held up as well as it has, I’m a bit rough on gear in any case. It’s one of my fave pieces of kit, and Tam and I have used it daily for long stretches of time also at what passes as “home” since we’ e been together, so durability is surprisingly good. I like the look of the pathfinder pot, but I think the lack of notch in the handles for hanging is a weird oversight considering where it came from. But otherwise great looking kettle as well.

    Excellent video comparing the two. I looked at both, but ended up with the pathfinder. Some things about the 2, The gsi is really easy to get. It is sold everywhere. The pathfinder is only sold at Bushcraft Canada. The mesh strainer in the PF pot fits perfectly in the Toaks 550 pot(which is my everyday drinking cup in the woods) and in the stanley adv cook set. It also nest well in the PF cup, and Gsi cups. I boil water in the pot and put the mesh in my cup. Perfect for tea or coffee, plus you can put the toaks lid on as well. If you are worried about coffee or tea grounds, a small coffee filter works well.

    Great comparison video! I own the GSI and it is always the kettle I go back to. Had it for over ten years. It has been abused unintentionally and left over the fire with snow in it. It wasn’t enough snow so the heat caused the bottom av the kettle to be uneven. But nothing else is wrong with it. If that would happen to the PF kettle it might start to leak. So the GSI is the kettle for the survivalist as I see it. It can take more abuse. And the PF kettle is a ripoff copy from the MSR Alpine teapot.

    I'm thinking that the Pathfinder strainer would come to good use when boiling water as a means of purifying water to drink. You could fetch water from a lake or stream in another vessel, and then pour it into the kettle through the strainer, getting rid of the small debris in the water before it boils.

    Question about the GSI Kettle Mark. How snug is the stock lid fit, and how hard would it be to do a little tweaking to the lid flange to get a custom fit? My big gripe with my current kettle is that I can't pour all of the water out of it without having to hold the lid on while i pour.

  • @MarkYoungBushcraft

    @MarkYoungBushcraft

    4 жыл бұрын

    I took a look at my GSI kettle to see how easy it would be to modify. It has about a 3/8" lip extending into the kettle body that could be bent outward in one or two places. If these protruding tabs where aligned to the rear of the kettle it should help reduce the lid from falling off as it is tipped forward. I did not try this myself so I can't guarantee it will work. Let me know if you try. Thank you for commenting

    I had to look the kettle up to see which on it is. I am wondering if the issue is when it is being used or when you are packing it away. Also, is it so loose that it moves around in its spot on the kettle. My only suggestion, and not much of an idea, would be to see if you can find some silicone tubing like what is on the handle. Split the tubing and run it around the edge of the hole in the kettle. Not sure it would work. Optionally, look for a replacement lid. I hope this is of some small help

    I realise these comments are a year old. I bought the GSI specifically to use in a Trangia as I had managed to get a Duossal set (this is before they started to make them again) as I was trying to move away from any Aluminium cooking equipment, unfortunately I found it would fit but wasn't as secure as a Trangia kettle and as mentioned above I did try bending the brackets to suit it but I was still concerned that if the kit knocked slightly the kettle would tip and spill the contents. I use the GSI over wood and charcoal and keep the Trangia when using that set-up.
