    The problem with Greek teams is that they never have all pieces set everytime one piece is missed. For examble I would argue that in the previous eurobasket Greece had the most complete roster with Sloukas, Calathes, Papagiannis, Antetokoubros etc and still missed a key player like Mitoglou a heavy 4 and great 3point shooter that would have made the difference against Germany. Greece is also very unlucky that Germany got so hot handed in this game, if Germany had the 3 point percentage that had in the final with Spain (to be realistic we have to admit that Spain played better defense than Greece but Germany was also tired after the game with Greece) Greece would have taken the title (it finished 5th). This year we have a great defensive team, we arguably play the greatest defense we played the last 15 years or so, but we are missing scoring power, ability that Sloukas could provide but he is missing due to injury. I think this will be the biggest headache of Spanoulis how we find a consistent 3point scorer that will score even on a bad day of some other players, if he somehow manages to find a consistent play system and scorer (for examble Toliopoulos) then Greece is a medal contender.

    What I like about this new Greek national team is that at last they play with offensive and defensive plays. Coach Spanoulis, like Olympiacos' coach Bartzokas, seems to have quite an arsenal of plays for each one of his players. Giannis is a global superstar and I can understand the pressure he might feel to win a trophy with the national team. But this time we have a coach who can easily use Giannis' tremendous talent. Not to mention that Giannis, during this tournament, was out of rhythm (a result of his injury and prolonged absence off the court) but still he was a threat for every opponent. A healthy and ready Giannis, under Spanoulis guidance, will boost the entire team.

  • @jackdonith
    @jackdonith13 күн бұрын

    Itoudis and other coaches of Greece tried to just have Giannis gather people around him and hope for free shots if he threw the ball to a free player. However, Spanoulis has usually 2 creative PG that look for free players before Giannis gets the ball. And Papagiannis is given more freedom to stay far away from Giannis. If the other center guards Giannis, Papagiannis is free to shoot for 3. And if a 2,20m guy has no one close to him guarding him he basically shoot entirely free. It's a bit like Wemby shooting. Although the two starting guards of Greece, Calathes and Walkup arent' the best of shooters, the rest of the team have the space and permition to shoot for three, a lot.If you decide to guard them you leave space for Giannis which is never smart. Defensively Greece is pretty good too, Spanoulis had a tough defensive team with Peristeri anyway. The group of Greece is very strong but I think it can make it to semifinals. Not the best of teams but a very hard team to beat.

    Really good and informative analysis Augustas. I think the main difference compared to previous years, even though this roster has some weaknesses and absentees, is that Spanoulis has actually sat down and thought about how to utilise Giannis in the best way possible, whilst not making the rest of the team feel like they're just there to make up numbers. Whilst we had some decent coaches in the past, they were not able to incorporate Giannis in a meaningful way most of the time and the team essentially boiled down to "give the ball to Giannis and cross your fingers". Worked great when the opposition didn't/couldn't deal with him in an efficient way but only then. Having players that were of top euroleague calibre and reducing them to just "pass to one guy and stay out of the way" was abhorrent. Spanoulis commands the respect of the whole team and has a winning mentality, which helps by itself. Combine that with making everyone in the team feel useful, having plays that use Giannis as a distraction to create for the rest of team and also letting Giannis do his thing when he can, and you get a good team. It also helps that Calathes seems to somehow, at this age, play the best basketball of his career, Papagiannis adding a 3pt threat and a few other bits and pieces, and this team is fun to watch, as well as having the ability to always turn the defensive screws on when things in attack are not going too well. Nevertheless, I think that even going through the group stage is going to be a challenge, with the likes of Canada, Australia and Spain. Running the floor against Canada (a mini-USA team) is not going to work too well I think. Australia is full of NBA players, even if they aren't as good as in previous iterations and Spain is maybe average in terms of roster, but Spain is Spain. Our frontline is somewhat weak in numbers (especially if Kostas Anteto is injured) and whilst having big men that stretch the floor is good when Giannis is on the court, it doesn't work as well when he isn't (and we don't have a traditional C that can play with his back towards the basket). Would have liked to also have Sloukas on the squad (not so much for his creativity, I think that's well covered with Calathes and Walkup, but mostly for his scoring) but injuries are part of the game unfortunately.

The national team has echoes of Peristeri, a very team orientated mentality, Antentokoumpo would take his shots only if he has the best shot in a possession. He would go to the bench also when he's not the best option like it happened against Croatia when it was crucial to get Saric/Zupac out of the paint and Spanoulis CHOSE to play with Mitoglou/Papagiannis and Antentokoumpo on the bench.

    Also, he (and almost every European player), needs to visit the gym more. Excellent talent and skills for so many guys but couldn't compete at the same level at NBA just because of that. Having +10 inches(25cm) vertical, +30lb(13.5kilos) more of muscles and spending more time training, would make all the difference since NBA is 95% super athletes (and also very talented too!). Even if you are more talented, you can't play defence if train of muscles is coming towards you or if they are physically that much better than you (try defending Curry running circles non-stop and being lighting fast at shooting)

    2008 Greece didn’t have a NBA Superstar like Giannis but they had a better team in the overall, coming from a Eurobasket tile and a World Cup final, Late 1980s Greece led by Galis, Giannakis and Christodoulou were legendary but not really comparable to nowadays game, this Greece is in a really difficult group, had lots of trouble in previous tournaments leading to early exits. The fair comparison would be if they could eliminate a team like 2008 Argentina and play a quarterfinal, that’s when this Greece can get in the convo, better than the recent years, lots of grounds to cover to reach the heights of 1987-1989 and 2005-2007

    @@kingjaskoIn the game against Greece, Slovenia was a two man team. It was literally, Luka and Nebo, offensively at least. You cannot win games with 2 players. Greece had this issue too when we tried to play only around Giannis. Luka and Nebo can bend over backwards but they won't score 90 points on their own no matter what. And I think it's a coach issue because there's no way the rest are just that bad.

One of the best Greek basketball teams was the Team that won in World Basketball tournament in Saitama the silver medal after won by scoring 100 points and won a match against team USA. But our Dream Team was the Greek Team of 1987. In Saitama our National team had coach Giannakis as head coach. Now we have coach Spanoulis, and as players we are blessed to have Gianni and the other players like Calathes, Papagiannis, Mitoglou etc. As a Greek I hope my team in Olympics to show the potential.

Also our bench is not thin at all, Larentzakis and Toliopoulos played well and they will play even better as well as Charampopoulos! Our bench is the strongest we had in years.
