Is This The Best Compact Battery Solution For The BMPCC4k?

**Disclaimer: the video was shot at different times of the day and the exposure and focus would vary, I left the camera recording while I worked on other things**
One of the chief complaints of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k being poor battery life I decided to see if I could find the smallest external battery to power the camera. I stumbled across the Powerextra which is a Sony NPF 960 style that insanely has a USB 5v output and 6-8.4v DC output that can power my Feelworld 5" monitor.
Can it be true that the Powerextra battery can power my monitor and camera??? Can it power while recording to SSD? Can it handle Prores and Raw?
Watch the video and find out.

great video. since i received my camera in November, i have been powering my pocket off my gimbal at 14.8v through the dc port on the camera and additionally having the internal battery in also , this has saved me when my gimbal battery's were out and then my internal battery took over. im also in process of rigging up my steady cam with arm and vest with the atomos ninja inferno monitor and trying 2 of these battery's in the inferno , but wiring the 7 v dc out of each battery in series getting me that 14v for the pocket dc in, and still able to have the internal batt in. Great video just what i needed to fig out my steady cam battery and monitor solution

Okay so I bought this and I've realized that once the battery reaches below half way, the voltage through the DC port is too low to turn on the BMPCC4K. So the best way to use this battery is to use the dummy LPE6 to DC in since it will run the camera at a lower voltage (6volts) and let you use the remaining power until zero.

Great Video. 👉HOWEVER... According to Blackmagic, under powering the 12v port (10v-16v are acceptable) WILL damage the camera after extensive use. Use the dummy battery OR a 12v plate. Another issue is that there are reports of power being fed back to the 4K via the HDMI ports when powering the camera in this manor and that causes long term damage. I would love to get a definitive statement from BM on this because this is an AMAZING way to power everything. This has been discussed many times on the BM forums and on BMPCC4K facebook groups.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I just can't say it enough. I have 3 blackmagic cameras bmpcc, bmmcc and the 4k. These batteries are perfect for all 3 and provide plenty of juice in a much smaller package than the juicebox battery pack I was using previously. I purchased 4 of them and have dummy batteries for 2 of the cameras and a straight plate adapter for the BMMCC. Works flawlessly and without the monitor I filled up the the Samsung T5 SSD 1TB without running out of battery. That was recording at 4k DCI Constant Quality Q0. So this battery is more than enough to record hours and hours with 2 batteries of the camera's highest quality. This video transformed all 3 of my cameras making my rigs all smaller and lighter with plenty of power. Can't wait to add the field monitor coming tomorrow.

I have noticed much longer battery with my P4K and I use the camera to provide phantom power to my mic, so that's a double whammy on my battery. I did not get an exact time, didn't think about that till now, but I'm pretty sure I was getting close to 40 min on the stock battery. This is a great solution HOWEVER be aware that these batteries do not last very long. After just a couple of months I started getting half the battery life or less. The batteries will read 2 and even 3 bars of life left and yes it will run the camera BUT as soon as you hit record it does not have enough voltage to run everything and will shut off. The solution would be to get higher end name brand batteries and run it off the newer battery plates like the power junkie, tiltas plate, or the small rig plate.

Yes, the BMPCC4k needs 12v. I believe these PowerExtra batteries used to come with 12v DC out, but the new ones only do 7.9v out which will not power the BMPCC4k. I have a sneaking suspicion that this battery was barely meeting the power requirements for the camera, and I've never seen anything that definitively says this setup wouldn't damage your camera. I really wish something like this would work though.

The camera just shuts down if not enough current so no, it won’t damage the camera but you should note that if it powers down during a take, you will lose that entire take and not be able to recover what you shot. Best use for this solution is to keep the stock battery that comes with the camera in the battery compartment in the camera so if you do run down below the required voltage on the NPF it’ll switch to the in-cam battery and you can keep recording for about another 20 mins before having to change up.

Recording failures are related to media speeds and not power source. I read on some forums that BMD did not recommend using external power via the weipu with a battery installed. If that is true then even a v-mount with a lpe6 installed will not work. Everyone should take precaution when testing and results may vary. Equipment failure may happen for many reasons and may not be directly related to the battery.
