I've been using Sony NPF batteries for extended shoots since the BMPCC4K launched. I routinely film continuously for 2-3 hours at a time at 4k...and have never had a battery die at 50%. I have no idea what brand of NPF batteries you use but this information is completely inaccurate based on my experience in the field

Thank you for your input Jacob. You've been able to use your NP-F batteries down to 0% with the BMPCC4K? I've talked to people with the same experience as me, where the batteries always have 50% left when the camera dies. I'll tell you what Jacob, Before I got _people telling me to not step up NPF's when I first did that_ , and now I got people saying it's okay to step up NPF's. My conclusion is 1: Stepping up NP-F batteries is not their intended use however, 2: If your NP-F batteries are from a good manufacturer, they will probably handle it fine. The NP-F's that I as using are probably not good. I had a long conversation with a gentleman on Reddit who swears by NP-F, saying he's using a battery called IDX SL-F50. I will look into getting better NP-F's since I rely on them to power my monitor and lights.

I was going to mention the exact same thing. I've run with the Sony NP-970 and the exact same smallrig plate mentioned in the video, and have had zero issues doing into a dummy battery from the 7.4v out. There are many things that could factor into his camera powering down at 50%. I suspect shoddy 3rd party batteries.

Same here. I use np-f batteries for our studio’s working cameras 2 bmpcc 4Ks and a bmpcc 6K. We also have v-mount batteries as well but they’re too big (even the smaller ones) in comparison to the np-f970s.

  • @dpc4548

Coming from tv and commercials, i've only ever used a v-mount for cameras. It's not about the capacity (that helps), but the safety. Your experience was EXACTLY why we use them. For smaller cameras, two v-mounts makes life stress free. For the bigger ones, take three or four and you just keep two on charge. The bmpcc4k lasts about 5 hours on 90wh.

Hopefully my good luck continues as there aren't many options beyond switching batteries every 30 minutes, which sucks on a gimbal.

@@dericsanchez4081 Yeah you can record with SD cards and use the LP-6 batteries I'll say this: a monitor is super helpful because the display on the pocket 4k is not very bright and it isn't useful outside with daylight - and it does not articulate So I'd consider a monitor. I use Feelworld Lut7 which is super bright and huge. Great for outdoor. I made a video on it. If you truly want to use a Blackmagic camera as a dslr run and gun outdoors, I'd consider the 6k Pro. Bright articulating screen and optional viewfinder. If however you're mostly filming indoors doing interviews and such, then an un-rigged 4k will do just fine

Hello. I totally understand the power differences and how that's not a good thing. However , what surprises me is what happened to you when your battery died out. It shut off your recording! But for some reason, I use the NPF batteries the same way, but when the battery has died, I have been able to hot-swap to another Sony battery, and the camera does not shut off. It just runs on the canon battery that's inside the camera until I put another Sony NPF battery in it. Been operating that way for a few months now on several shoots and it's never been a problem. I've gotten over 2 hours on those things of continuous recording. I'm not saying you don't have a point, I'm just curious as to why we've had different experiences? That V-Mount battery looks nice! @@truthplease9234 The problem is that the NPF is 7.4v and you're stepping it up to 12v. The internal battery is not an issue because you're outputting 7.4v like intended. I never said 7.4v is the problem, I said stepping it up to 12 is the problem. Look, all I can say, people slammed me for recommending NPF and stepping it up to 12v, and now you slam me for not recommending stepping up NPF to 12v. I am speaking from experience, and echoing sentiments from others: Stepping up a 7.4v battery to 12v is probably not a great idea and invites all kinds of failure. That's why I recommend the internal which NATIVELY feeds 7.4v because that's all the camera requests from the internal battery. Then I recommend the FX Lion, as it can output 12v without stepping it up, but it is also small like the NPF making it light and easy for your rig.
