Five great battery solutions for the BLACKMAGIC POCKET 6K and 4K cinema cameras - Soonwell PH70
Фильм және анимация
In this video I share five great ways to power your Blackmagic Pocket 4K and 6K cameras. First solution comes from Soonwell and is the Soonwell PH70 which is a battery that also doubles as a top or side handle. This is a great solution and gives you access to two D-Tap ports, two DC out ports and one USB-A port. A killer solution that gives you power for the camera and a lot of accessories.
Second solution comes from Tilta and is the Tilta Focus side handle. A great piece of kit which also lets you to control the focus of your lens through the Tilta Nucleus Nano.
Third option is gonna be to use a NP-F980D battery on your monitor and then share the power of that to the camera it self through the DC out of the battery.
Fourth solution is using the NP plate from Tilta. A cool solution which lets you put the camera anywhere.
Last but not least the FX LION V-Mount battery. This is a really good V-mount battery with an OLED screen and USB-C output. The USB-C port lets you power your Laptop and you can also use an Apple Macbook Pro charger to charge the battery.

The solution with the 980D battery seems to be a somewhat hit n miss for some people. For me it has worked great but a few people have reached out to me and told me that it didn't work for them, Because of this I can't recommend that solution anymore, best wishes arber.
@animatoronline8336

I think it's because of the 7.4v output from the battery. Doesn't the BMPCC4k require 12V minimum if you're running it continuously?
@jonasvetsch6416
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, since NPF Batteries only output 7.4 V and the BMPCC requires 12 V you could damage your camera on the long term by providing it not enough voltage.

7v is still good enough to power Nucleus Nano’s motor

DO NOT feed 7-8v to the 2-pin power input. That takes 10-20v! If you want to use the power directly from the NP-F you need a dummy battery.

@@christianschmeer Hi there, by dummy battery do you mean one that goes into the canon battery slot with a cable hanging out to plug into the NPF? Does anyone know an NPF battery that has 12V output? many thanks!

Great review! I am considering the BMPCC4K/6K, and one of the obvious concerns is how to power it. As I already have the Tilta Nucleus Nano, their cage with control side grip interests me. How bulky would it be to add their V-mount "cage" below the camera cage? Seems like it would be a bit bulky, but a good way to power the camera, a monitor and add rails/matte box when needed.
good stuff!

I love the solution using the Sony battery as it's a nice compact solution when you're running and gunning, but how long does it last when you're powering the monitor and Pocket4k/6k?

Very interesting video. Which cable do you use to connect the 980 battery to the camera? I have tried a Tilta and it doesn´t work. Thank you.
Thanks for this incredible video. Third option: NP-F980D battery on your monitor and then share the power of that to the camera it self through the DC out of the battery. In this option: How is possible a 7.2V battery output can feed a 12V camera input? Shouldn't it be a 12V battery the right battery for this type of solution? Many thanks
A fundamental error is that the camera actually requires 12V, and the 7.4v is for the monitor.

BMPCC voltage inputs are 10.8 to 20v in the side input and 6.2-10V for a dummy battery so either one could be used depending on your application.
Hey Arber. Does the Tilta Side Handle solution work with the SmallRig Cage?
Can you used the tilta focus handle with the smallrig cage?
I reused my npf plate that I used for my BM pocket HD.... That used to give me 4.5hrs on the pocket HD using a npf 970. I only get an hour and a bit with my pocket 4k using a dummy battery.... I think I need a newer modern npf plate😋
Hey Arber mate, I’ve recently purchased the 98wh Nano 2. But haven’t had a chance to test out it’s performance fully yet. How many hours are you getting out of it? (With the BMPCC4K) I have a wedding coming up soon, and I’m wondering if I would be okay for a full day of shooting (if I’m intermittentently powering off the camera between shots).
what is the best rig for use of SETUP 1: Ronin and monitor (ronin powers camera) + follow focus Setup 2: Hand held with monitor + follow focus
Hi Arber, Brilliant solutions you mentioned. I use a Fujifilm rig, would the 2nd option of using a Sony NPF-980 battery work to power my camera or is it limited to the Pocket camera? - Cheers for any help

I've been looking at this also and it looks like they have a version for sony cameras as well. Cannon also. But you cant use it with any camera. You have to make sure you pick the right one
Love it. How long does the battery life last for the NP-F970 when using both the 4K and the Screen?
@ArberBaqaj
3 жыл бұрын
around two hours, but it depends if you have the screen on full brightness, that screen its battery =)
Hi! I just purchased a BMPCC 6K Pro and mounted it onto a Ronin RS2 gimbal. Do you have a recommendation on the best (longest lasting) power source that can be either mounted on the gimbal grip, or worn on a belt? TIA!!! Tom
How long does the NP-F980D give you in raw? and with the monitor simultaneously? Thank you!
Are there specific cages that the soonwell will fit?
Can it be done with a lipo battery?
Does this work with Tilta cage and Nucleus-Nano?
My favorite solution: Canon camera batteries. I carry about 8 in my camera vest. Why do I do that? 1. 3rd party batteries are plentiful, cheap, and good. 2. Because it's the lightest set up I can get for hand held shooting.

Great option for planned shoots, not great for documentary as you can easily miss a shot or have the camera die half way through an important moment and lose the entire clip!
Is it necessary to use a dummy battery with a v-mount battery?
hey ! I wanted to use same NPF batteries as you with DC out but read that's it's actually STRONGLY not recommanded as it only outputs 8.4V and the camera asks for 12V. It can really damage the camera ! I tried it and had sudden shutdowns while recording same for the Tilta plate the 12V output is for the camera and 8V is for monitor and not the other way around !
Question. I thought this camera (pocket 6k) could do 120 frames per second with a crop , but I can’t find 120p anywhere in the camera! Do you know if it’s true you can shoot at 120 and if so , where is it?

@@ArberBaqaj Thanks. Looking into this more it does seem like the BMPCC4k requires at least 12V to run it safely. In theory I guess you could use the Tilta plate in conjunction with the 980D though...although I'm not sure if the battery could then be used to power a monitor using it's DC output or not?
I heard that the Sony NP-F battery will cut out voltage on the USB out port after a short time. So your follow focus might lose power. Read it in an Amzn review somewhere. Don't own Nucleus, so cannot confirm. Maybe you can check? Thanks!

Well it does have a 12v out that converts the current in some way
Focus would be on how many hours of shoot you get from any of the power alternatives, from experience its starting to get frustrating these batteries are Really unreliable after a short time
PSA: Don't put a handle on the top of the camera without a cage. The mount on the top of the camera isn't meant for holding the weight of the camera. It will break, and when it does, it's not covered under warranty.
