I may be one of the few people who DON'T want this huge palette!😃 But I do love and use only ceramic/porcelain ones. I've cobbled together a sort of "system" which I have been revising the last few weeks! Last year when I started out, I bought several small ones (similar to Meeden's 7" x 4" 14 well one) and filled one with blues, one with greens, etc...and I made a swatch card for each palette. As I have come to find out, the wells are just too small - and my paint collection has grown! So I am ditching them (well, selling them on ebay!). I have done some lessons and tutorials using small dipping bowls and I've liked that better - I have a couple sizes of ceramic trays to use for mixing and watering down colors. None are actually artist's palettes - they're "kitchen" items on Amazon! I had smaller desser/appetizer ones - I just scored a sale several days ago and got 2 12" x 10" ones. I DID love watching you set up YOUR palette, though, Liz! And I LOVE that you have a lot of paint colors! I know some artists only use a few colors and mix everything they need...but there are so many luscious colors out there that are fun to use! And THANK YOU for the GREAT tip on how to squeeze out the paint - I will definitely start doing it that way. I ALWAYS squeeze too much out and even if I want to save some colors for later, this is going to be VERY helpful - better to add fresh paint! I'm still going to make up swatch sheets by color category and I'll be able to find the paint tubes easily as I now have them stored in lipstick holders by color category. Such a cool idea I saw on KZread - 15 ml tubes fit just right in the ones I got! I'm going to add pigment info this time as I love exploring that after watching your video on it and accessing Oto Kano's Watercolor Encyclopedia. Oh my goodness - I have written you a novella, but you talk to us like we're right there and I just talked back to you! If you're still reading at this point🥰 - thanks again, Liz!

I love that you are experimenting and finding your own preferences. I only use 6 or so colours in any one painting, but that doesn’t mean I only have six colours in my paint box. All those colours are like irresistible jewels 💎 Keep playing and learning and do your own thing 😊

It really is!

The primaries in my opinion are the slightly larger wells that have this triangular ending pointing inwards. The dashes you Liz pointed out at 8:53 imo are for the "secondary" and then there are the smaller point-like features and those must be the tertiary. But anyway, what a gorgeous palette. I paint in the living room to be with my husband while I do so, so I'll never have a palette like that but I can live vicariously through you 🤭😁

Oh yes, I have been eyeing this palette ever since I saw your review about the Meeden Beginners Watercolor set a while back. It is definitely on my Christmas list but I have got to get a bigger space for my studio set up. Thanks for sharing this wonderful review & I can’t wait to see how yours is finally done. It would be a long time for me to decide & narrow down to 33 colors so I understand completely your dilemma with the setting up. Enjoy the process and have a fun time! I totally agree with you on Aussie Red Gold and Quin Gold. I put them next to each other and I’m so sorry I did. I can, of course, remove one ; but, my pretty color guide has now been laminated! Oh dear, what a dilemma!

NOW WITH LID! After lots of folk said this has a lid I contacted Meeden. This is what they said: Regarding the suggestions for the ceramic palette lid, we have received similar feedback from our customers before, and our product team has already addressed the cover issue at the end of June. The new batch of large ceramic palettes that replenished in the overseas warehouses will include the lids, but the price will be slightly higher than before. The product sample we sent to you was in May, and those batches of large ceramic palettes did not include the lids yet. I am sorry about that. Our products are constantly being updated and improved to meet the needs of all customers to the greatest extent possible. Great to know they listen to feedback!

Liz, I have this palette and contacted Meeden about buying a lid for it. The newer ones come with a cover. They are sending me one free. All I had to do was show proof of purchase. They said they stand behind their products and were glad to send it to people who bought the early ones that came without a cover. Happy New Year.

Hi Liz bought this humongous beauty many months ago without a lid but will do as you have done.l have been dying to use it but all of my painting gear & 100 boxes of china etc have been stored in rooms & moved about as our home has been underpinned & renovated then painted & new carpets throughout.Huge job,hopefully the kitchen will be done soon.It’s been a long process but looking lovely again.Fingers crossed 🤞next week l can put my painting room back together & paint to my hearts content.🙏New sub from 🐨🦘Best wishes.♥️

I have had this palette for a while, and it's beautiful. I haven't been able to make myself commit to colors that I squeeze out into it, so I've only really used it for mixing space. You're making me want to commit, though....

You can do it. But it’s hard!!

Looks perfect for someone with a Quiller brain who wants a palette with three perfect primaries, three perfect secondaries, six perfect tertiaries and twelve of whatever comes next. They’d be able to look at the palette and (as you say) immediately spot the complementaries but also the triadic colour schemes he likes with three colours forming an equilateral triangle and split complementary schemes with three colours forming an isosceles triangle with one short side and two long. I'll be sticking with my Mijello 18-well palette though. I use mainly primaries plus earths and viridian, no oranges or purples. With a palette like that, I'm more interested in getting the colours in the right hot/cold order than in pinning them down to particular spots on the clock face opposite their complements. Does that make sense? With the Meeden palette there would be some places on the circle that I'd want to be empty and some places where I'd be wanting to cram four colours into two or three wells. I'm not sure I could bring myself to put a colour on a Meeden palette 30 degrees away from its correct position. I started this off thinking Stephen Quiller was a bit inflexible and OCD about his colour choices but am now thinking that I'm just as bad but with palettes.

The first thing I thought was "love it but couldn't cope with six months of colour choosing procrastination" but you're right, it would be great fun to set up. I love your tip of putting a good sized blob of paint plus a thinner layer to make colour identification easier, especially for us noobs. I'm off to the Meeden website now, "just to take a look"... 😜

I do not know if it is an endorsed product, but it is a beautiful palette and extremely good value for money. Apparently it comes with a lid now…

I bit the dust and purchased the Quiller two years ago because it has a heavy duty plastic top that fits loose to let the colors dry when not in use. I LOVE it! My goal is to use this palette to force myself to learn to mix the colors I want. I love experimenting with color theory and find great satisfaction in mixing my own colors on this large mixing area. Like you, I have a box full of tube paints and find it time consuming to always be looking for the right color to put out just for one painting. Big wells are perfect for dipping large brushes. I took a long time to fill the wells with the colors I wanted. I decided on only transparent and semi-transparent colors. No cads. The most opaque color on my palette is cerulean blue. I took clues from a Stephen Quiller 's book, Painter's Guide to Color, and set mine up so I could use the paints opposite on the color wheel to create very quick beautiful grays for shadows. I placed natural colors in the corners. The book also includes a large copy of Quiller's new color wheel, which I illuminated and put on the top of my palette. I used the big arrows for primary, skinny long arrows for secondary and small arrows for tertiary colors. In between I stayed with the color wheel but included colors I love. So far so good. I have only changed out one color and moved one color over one place when I replaced the color I didn't want. Have fun with your new palette.

This has been in then out of my basket so many times! I really don't have enough space for it though and that makes my avaricious little soul so sad... I do have the large rectangular one with wells on 3 sides and its great. Love meeden palettes. I could never understand why people would buy the overpriced one. Think how much paint you could buy for the same cost!

Hullo Liz and I got this palette just 2 months ago! I also got 2 of the 12 well palettes with the lid on one came broke and they replaced it no problems! I am not sure how it got broke but they were very nice about it and Wala! A New one was sent right away! I used the box it came in as a lid it fit just fine after I cut it down to size! (Looks like you did the same!) I used felt fabric and just glued it to the bottom and it slides quite easily. I also would not spend the price they want for the Quiller palette! I disagree about the nobs, opposite the nobs are larger pans and your primaries would go into them as you would use them the most right? SO I put the most paint in the "primary wells" I also put a line of paint at the base or bottom of the other wells and bring a tint towards the center to see the color of the paints. I have moved colors by scraping the dry color out of the well, "glue" it into a different well with new paint from the tube! Because like you I changed my mind! (I moved one of my convenience greens!) Wonderful video I wonder how your setting up the 12 well palette? I got one for the Discovering opaque colors palette from DaVinci! I had all of the colors except for Denise's Gray and Stormy Blue and I ordered tubes right away as I am a fan of Denise's!

p.s. Hobbycraft have 3 for 2 on art supplies at the minute, including the Winsor & Newton Professional range (plus Cotman etc.), a lot of the W&N, Daler Rowney inks, etc. Worth a visit if you're nearby. I may have been "persuaded" into buying tubes of alazarin crimson, french ultramarine in order to get another tube of green gold (because I love it and it was "free", right?!)

Looked this up on the Meeden site and it comes with a plastic lid and says the bottom is smooth so it won’t scratch. I’m in the US so maybe the US version of their website/product list is different? $49.95 as you said but with a large plastic lid.

If you paint in a small space, it certainly is. But it’s gorgeous.

I've had this in my Amazon basket for a while ) can't see it on the Meeden GB website) but I haven't committed as it doesn't have a lid. I didn't think to make one out of the box, so thanks for that tip!
