Is this drum mower worth the money?

Ойын-сауық

After 3 years of owning this drum mower, I'm giving my review of the Tar River BDR-185.

One that mowed here was so technically simple I really liked it. This one was belt driven. The brand the neighbor uses changing the blades is very easy. He hit something and had to change a blade. I think it was about 2 or 3 minutes at most.

That's a big thing for me also, you can change out all 6 blades in 5 mins and they are a very simple good running machine with not much maintenance!

@@willowbranchfarm his machine was quite a bit bigger and I'm not sure how many cutters it has but it would not take long end of season, start of the next... whenever to either sharpen them or change them. What I liked about it was there isn't much to maintain and it wouldn't take long even when it gets done. In any kind of machinery that's a big deal!

@@user-fp7ee2mk3c that's the one down fall for me, what you just mentioned. I'm starting to wish my mower was bigger as I pick up more and more acres each year. But love everything else about it!

I've been looking into one of these drum mowers and I have one major concern, the cut height. Do you find that it cuts too short?

You are correct, basically that drum sits flat on the ground and does cut pretty short. But honestly I'm cutting mixed grass hay, and really isn't an issue for me. I have seen that adjusting the top link on the 3 point changes the angle, and I usually run mine a little high in the front which maybe helps. But really no adjustment you can do to change that unless they make some kind of shim or something I don't know about.

@@willowbranchfarm I appreciate your reply. I have been mulling this decision over for a while and I have decided to get an Enorossi 7' sickle bar mower. I like how the Enorossi has a double action sickle bar that really scissors the grass. It should give me more cut height control. They also leave the cut grass laid out instead of in windrows. They are about the same price as the Tar River drums. The other thing I like about them is they have a real small footprint in the barn when they're off the tractor. It was a tough decision. I'm picking it up tomorrow. Maybe I'll make a video during first cutting next spring.

@@schleppinghay best of luck, you sound like me, I research the heck out of things before buying ha ha. I'll be looking for that video come spring.

I am cutting alfala with a drum mower and it works great. The crown of the alfalfa is below ground though. I can hear if I go through a clump of tufted grass though!
