Is This Dolphin Speaking English?

Ойын-сауық

Researcher Margaret Howe's initial focus with Peter the dolphin was teaching him the basics of human conversation: getting him to listen to speech, then encouraging him to “speak.”

It's pretty much like that with most animals. For example even if a dog had human intelligence it wouldn't be able to talk. Now of it force themselves they could say some words but never be able to have a full conversation. The way Dolphin vocal cords seem to be built. Might be even harder for them to talk like humans. Of crouse it's also hard for human to make dolphin sounds but some humans are able to do it. Now if a parrot had human intelligence that bird would be able to have a full conversation.

Problem: Dolphins only seem to be capable of vowel sounds. We have the technology to mimic their speech. We should concentrate on learning to speak dolphin. The problem with that is that dolphins, like other cetaceans and even like human beings have languages specific to pods (or nations). I think the key could be to befriend a specific pod and interact with it 24/7 and identify meanings and any structure behind their sounds. This would take the work of linguists.

It's pretty obvious dolphins and orcas have a unique language which is likely unique according to where they are located orcas for example have different dialicts similar to how humans have different languages or changes depending on differences and culture this is likely also mixed with body language and other means. Given the intelligence of the mammals it makes sense that some especially those constantly in contact with humans especially chatty ones might try to mimic or even try to communicate with humans by learning the language. If true it means we could and should train a dolphin especially at a young age to learn human speech and maybe learn basic human known knowledge, we could potentially be at a stage where uplifting a sentient species is possible!🤓

Do these people no realize that their voices are not meant to make these sounds? Their vocal cords aren't meant to make such a deep clear sound like humans make. Their voices are very high compared to humans. On top of that, the human vocal cords are meant to be spoken in air, the dolphins voices are meant to travel through water. It sounds very different. It doesn't take a genius to realize this.

He couldn’t bare the separation and new living space so he killed himself by choosing not to breath. And this woman said in her interview that she was more bothered by the living conditions in the Miami lab than the fact that he was gone. That part didn’t bother her. I don’t get that. How could she not be gutted that he was dead? What a lot of animal researchers involved in language research fail to grasp is that certain animals are anatomically incapable of producing language (and particularly english) sounds. Mandarin is far more tonal and may be easier to teach, especially to chimpanzees for example. A better approach would be to develop an interface language, i.e. a language with a simplified grammar which is based purely on tones and clicks that the dolphin can actually produce.

Dolphins think of humans as playmates, but not Peter, (probably.) You need to keep them somewhere where they can be happy though, and feed them on a basis, and play with them.

+Alex Reynolds Well, the issues is that a) we can't produce those sounds, unless we use synthesized sounds, b) dolphin hearing is much more acute than hours, so we'll probably have trouble distinguishing the right sounds, and c) dolphins do not seem to have a full language (as far as we can tell, anyway).

This seems kind of mean. Why do animals have to learn our language? Human's are more than capable of picking up languages of animals although it's more body language and facial expressions we go by than anything.

***** Why would I be joking? Animals can't speak human language clearly because of evolution but what's stopping humans from learning the "language" of the animals? I mean, my dogs can't verbalize what they wants but it's easy enough to pick up on just from observing their facial expression and body language.

For the record when I said this I meant that there's really no need to make an animal speak the human language when humans are capable of picking up body language. And it seems a bit cruel to try to make an animal speak when they don't have vocal cords. They're getting animals to speak just to see if they *can* not to try and get them to say something adorable like "I love you"...and birds are different seeing as they do mimic a person if the word is said enough.

That is not language communication that is a reward system the dolphin makes simular sounds to get fish...he is not going to know 1 2 3 as 1 2 3. This vid is tied in with earlier vid about NASA using the dolfins to practice communicating with an alien race if we encountered them.. aliens if wanted to communicate would be trying to learn each others language ... and I doubt reward method like teaching a dog/dolfin to make a noise for reward would work on an alien lol... interesting video though and glimpse at waste of tax dollars

Trying to teach this animal a language which requires a human-like mouth and lips or some way to make equivalent sounds. I'm sure if you studied the anatomy of humans and how it relates to our language you will find that English in the traditional way is physically not possible for a dolphin.

Have someone develop a language that uses click consonants, or something easier for a dolphin's speech organs. Trying to get it to mimic a human language, especially one like English, seems counterproductive. Work with what they have like the researchers that teach sign language to primates.

That woman is ignorant! WHY should dolphins have to learn how to speak English?!? Why doesn't she learn how to communicate in the dolphins' language? I have learned to communicate with my deaf dogs by paying attention to their verbal and nonverbal communication styles. Because of that they respect me and pay attention when I try to communicate to them, too. People always comment at how calm, at peace and aware they are. It's because I respect them as who they are as dogs and not expect them to act as humans. We are more in balance with nature and the world when we respect everything on this Earth from the perspective of appreciating who they were born and created to be and not our expectations of who we think they should be.
