Panda Doesn't Realise She's Had Twins! | BBC Earth

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

When having multiple cubs, pandas will usually only care for one baby and abandon the other, but switching them around might be the key for both twins' survival. Narrated by David Attenborough.

Natural World: Saving the Panda
Conservation has come a long way since the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was officially established as a charity almost 50 years ago on 11 September 1961, and the giant panda's story epitomises just how much has been achieved. Granted exclusive access to the world's number one panda research centre and reserve at Chengdu, this film follows the life of a mother and cubs from conception through birth and hand-rearing, to play and young adulthood - and the international team that care for them - over the course of 18 months. With archive footage, the film looks back at the extraordinary East-West collaboration that brought giant pandas back from the brink of extinction, and ahead to the radical, controversial and risky next phase: reintroduction into the wild.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of astounding, entertaining, thought-provoking and educational natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

    I think the mother trusts the keeper implicitly to not harm her cub. Pandas are hard wired by nature to prevent the cub being separated from the body heat of it's mother for the first month or six weeks because of the risk of hypothermia. Even the keepers wrap it in a warming cloth when transferring the cub to the incubator to avoid a drop in body temperature.

    That is a genius idea. Even if she knows she has more than one cub and can tell the difference between them, this probably makes things less overwhelming for her as she just focuses on caring for one of the cubs at a time while the other is being cared for by the handlers until they swap the cubs.

    You didn't listen! The commentator said that the Panda allowing the carer to take the cub requires a great level of trust between the Panda and the carer. She didn't 'trade' her cub for honey water, she knows she'll get her cub back, as she does each time! She just doesn't like having to part with the cub even for a little while, and quite understandably, given that cub is her only comfort. I do think that small empty bare cage she's in is awful though, I hope that's just temporary for the purpose of getting both of the cubs fed by the panda! 🙏🏻

  • @OK-hi5ym

    @OK-hi5ym

    4 жыл бұрын

    I replied this on another comment that was saying it was mean to keep her in a cage like this but this just the indoor part of her enclosure, there is also an outdoor part that she can access at any time. In the wild when pandas are about to give birth they will find a cave to nest down in to have their child and for a few weeks after birth, she’s choosing to stay in there because that’s what feels safe and natural for her. Also in most zoos the outdoor part is the area open for public viewing so going inside means she’s gets quiet and privacy to care for her new babies. When pandas are born they are blind and extremely helpless, it would dangerous at this stage to have rocks, leaves etc in her space. It’s also easier to keep sterile and clean as the newborns are also very susceptible to illness for the first few weeks. They spend most of their time tucked in their mother’s armpit where her nipples are, breastfeeding.

    @bull Zhou they're not born prematurely. They're just born small because it's easier for their bodies to convert the little nutrition that bamboo (the staple of a pandas diet) provides into milk rather than to convert it into animal tissue so their cubs are born small so they can get the rest of their nutritional value through moms milk. It's a breeding strategy that comes with trade offs, unfortunately.

    @Guru Amirite it might just be that those people don't have enough funds or land to build a comfortable place for pandas. Although that's unlikely, there's no doubt that Chinese people love their work and love pandas. Pandas are one of the national symbols of China, and many do their best to take care of them, even if the pandas are behind bars. Also note that this is only one mother panda. Maybe this is the easiest place to tend to pandas with cubs, and afterwards they'll be moved back to better enclosures, with their friends. But who knows.

    @@Kopie0830 purely based on my observation of my parents, aging family friends, distance uncles and aunts. Those who practice eating PURE RAW honey (no sugar added whatsoever) regularly does not have diabetes. But those who have diabetes (they're not a fan of honey and don't consume it regularly) can no longer consume honey. Wish they had a scientific study about this though.

    I agree, animals are smarter than we think, she knows it's a different baby. With other baby animals, they say the mother can tell by how they smell. I'm sure this isn't any different.

    Yes, it also occurred to me that surely the mother must be able to distinguish their different scents? And she was clearly aware of the keeper's attempts to take her cub and kept shielding it when he made his attempts... although of course the honey won out in the end - well, she is a bear after all!

    I know, right? The Bamboo forests of China are full of poachers creeping around with bowls of honey, trading them to Panda mummies for their Panda babies. There are even rumours of some unscrupulous human traders selling rifles and firewater to Pandas in the deep forests, they they go in and steal the rifles back, along with their Panda babies when the adult Panda are out cold in a drunken stupor!
