Is there such a thing as a cheap Audi R8? | Head-to-head with

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Earlier this year, I bought a 'cheap' Gen 1 Audi R8 and it's been an... interesting experience so far. So I phoned up my mate, Ben Daly, and we brought both of R8's down to Ricky at REPerformance to see how different two seemingly identical cars are.

Wow, what a great video... and a horrifying look at how expensive these things can get! You both did great taking it on the chin despite some pretty hefty bills. Thanks for taking us on the journey!

How many kilometers on each car? That would have been some of the most important information to know. That should have been the first bit of info to hear.

I was lucky, bought my '09 R8 V8 a year ago, private seller. He was cool with a pre-purchase inspection but wasn't willing to drive it from Bedford-Swindon to get Ricky to look at it. He seemed an honest and genuine guy and believed him when he said that anything that Audi dealer said needed doing he got done. I trusted my gut and bought it. Still took it to RE Performance straight away and he told me everything was in tip top shape barring a blown cigarette lighter fuse and a handbrake that was on its way out. £900 for a major service and MOT and while I was there, £800 to get the hand brake fixed by the main man. £1700 is all I've had to pay for it so far. Next year I plan for a carbon clean (and possibly a before/after dyno run) as preventative maintenance.

I hear the carbon clean makes it like new. Needed more due to the engines not liking ethonel mix fuels

To be fair, most modern cars will be pretty expensive to make all these fixes if done at a reputable shop. Obviously not to this level but you can easily spend $4k-6k removing an engine and fixing various things in any 2012+ vehicle. This is why its better to be mechanically inclined and be able to do most or at least some of these fixes yourself. The fatal twist here is the need to remove the engine for even simpler fixes on these cars and other rear engine vehicles.

When you could buy a fairly decent family car for the price of fixing the R8. Ouch! Great video though Tom.

I want to buy a used Porsche 718 Gt4. My wife wants an Audi R8. I've been stalling because I'm worried about huge maintenance costs and don't know a lot about either of these brands, but I would like to get her an R8 because it seems that's the only way I'm going to get a sports car. She's shooting down my Porsche dreams.

Like anything if you buy a well maintained and serviced car it wouldn’t end up like these. Dude with the paint ball hat cant even drive in a straight line onto the hoist let alone maintain a car so what do you expect.
