The R8 is a modern classic. The 1st gen is still my favourite but the 2nd gen is also incredible. What a car.

I drove both,1st gen was very nervous

I still love the Gen 1 and reminds me of the first time I saw one in the square mile. It was the sound plus the enclosed roads in the city that enhanced it. Epic!

Probably the best video on both R8’s Iv seen Pete 👌🏻. I’m lucky enough to own a first gen manual and I can’t put into words how good the driving experience is 👌🏻

I think I would take the V8. That way I could take it to my favorite hillclimbs and use it. As you said, that V10 needs a lot of room to be driven fast. Hill climbs do not have that feature. Thanks Peter, that was a good video and it was good to see the first and last side by side.

Great video and thanks for making it. I'm lucky enough to have a gen 1 R8 manual along with its stable mate 981 Spyder. I had planned to sell the R8 to accommodate the newly acquired Spyder earlier this year, as two weekend cars is an expensive extravagance, but each time I think about popping it on the classifieds i change my mind, . and in spite of getting the Spyder i still drove the R8 as much if not more this year. I think they are both keepers....oh and yes...Those Top Gear exhausts are the dogs !

Great vid more like this please. I’m sure the experiences in old and new cars were as described but for me as a viewer, and an old school guy, the old car appeared analogue and the new more digital, from human/machine 50/50 to the newer 40/60 where technology somehow intervenes more. Thanks for sharing 👍

Thanks for this excellent video ! I appreciate this a lot ! I feel the 1st version is timeless... That why I finally choose to get one... (May be because of the price too...the V10 version is not affordable for me) No regrets ! I was dreaming of this legend car since Ironman movie... I don't think to ever sell it.

Wow Pete, the image quality, editing, drone shots, etc, has come so far since I first subscribed. This is a great piece of film, and that is before we consider the narration and actual content. The audio levels were a bit all over the place in this one, but that is a very small minus point. Never been an Audi fan, but the R8 is probably one of a small number which I do find desirable, and the first gen R8 is a great looking car. It actually looks more modern than the later version. Have a good Christmas, all the best to you and the family (& pets), look forward to another year of quality 4 wheel fun.

Great vid, as always Pete. The R8 is essentially an Italian Bull in German Lederhosen!! Both sound amazing. Not sure I’d want the black one living next door though with that cold start grunt!! Many thanks to your neighbour for allowing you to play with it!

Happy Xmas, great content this year. I'd have the gen 1 for a weekend toy and bank the difference. The Gen 1 looked better inside as well. The prettiest feature of an alreay beautiful car is that gated shifter. Period.

Hi Ped Thoroughly enjoyed that 🤗 Always admired the R8, although I chose Porsche 911 as I wanted a drop top and additional space of 2plus2. If I was to seriously consider an R8 it would have to be Gen1 V8. The looks still to be admired today, more than enough power for road use, and the “analog” features rather refreshing and satisfying. Less can be more.😉

I have made the same decision. A gen1 R8 coupe manual would be a nice addition to a 911 cab. Circa 300-400bhp is certainly more than enough for road use. Even then a second gear pull to the red line typically takes you beyond the national speed limit. IMO, on the road what you lose is generally more than you gain when you have more than 450bhp on tap. It's somewhat different though if you were talking about a luxury super GT, because you need a lot of power to get the weight moving with urgency. Of course, it depends on many factors, like usage profile, driving style, gearbox type, gearing, etc. With a 911, if it's an everyday driver, you may get more enjoyment out of a 991.2/992 turbo car with PDK, whereas if it's primarily used for a B-road blast, an earlier n-a car with a manual gearbox is likely to offer more enjoyment. Either way, it's the base Carreras that often make the most sense on public roads. In the case of the R8, a gen1 V8 manual makes a very strong case for itself even against a V10 manual for use on UK public roads, and IMO it's also prettier. However, with the S-Tronic gearbox, I'd probably choose a V10, but with the base engine rather than the Plus/Performance/GT variant, because on the road I definitely think less power would facilitate more enjoyment.

I find there are a billion 911s on the road and the V10 sounds way better so I went with the R8. Was originally considering a 911 or Nissan GTR though.

This was an epic video Pete . ! The first time i drove an R8 was in 2006 i think , Weeks or Months before the launch anyway, I felt like a million dollars . It was an epic feeling driving it to a Petrol station . Time has gone on and cars have moved on. The R8 i feel has been left behind but you brought me back Pete to the times i missed about this car !!

Firstly Happy Christmas when it comes to you both & the pups. Stunning cars both of them I would want the safety of the AWD system but the styling of the V10 was really on point for me but I would have wanted Black over white so as I could not make my mind up on either I would have to pass on them. I have never driven a V8 or V10 but I did have a 2.5L V6 with an induction kit that sounded really good but it doesn't match the distinctive sounds of the bigger engines. Sometimes I think the R8 looks too much like a TT but then you get a side on glimpse and a fleeting glance of it way out front and instantly recognise an R8. Stunning cars but not for me but I am sure you had a few days of pure enjoyment.

Nice video :) I have owned both a Gen1 V8 manual and also a face lift Gen1 V10 manual (both low mileage cars), imho the V10 is the far better car, it has over 100 hp more than the V8, uses zero oil compared to the V8 and on a 'normal driving' good run it is possible to see 30/32mpg whereas I never saw anything over 27/28mpg from the V8, who would have thought that the 'Lamborghini' engine would be better than an Audi engine :)

Truly marks the sad end of a golden era of motoring. IMO, the gen1 V8 is the prettiest variant and the manual makes a very strong case for itself even against a V10 manual for use on UK public roads. A great looking car for sure. Interestingly though in Melbourne Australia, an R8 gen 1 - 2008 V8 with 16,000 kms will still get AUD$149,900 and a 2020 V10 performance Quattro with just shy 6000 Kms will set you back a staggering AUD$379,000 Need to win lotto or be a criminal to afford that sort of coin. But that V10 is just something to behold. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Prefer the look, exhaust noise and engine noise of the modern V10. But, for road use, I'd prefer 4WD and to lose the large "boy-racer fin" at the rear - perhaps something more subtle. 😄

I had to watch and truly digest this one. You've put SO much into this! Me? I'd have to have the old manual car; all my cars bar my Prius had manuals. The newer one? I'm just shedding a tear of regret that the world can no longer be a place (outside a race course...may these NEVER be banned) wherein cars like this can be wrung out and enjoyed. Maybe the next "R8" will be all electric. Will the government(s) allow us to enjoy these vehicles on the roads of our respective countries? I hope so. I had a great Christmas, and when visiting my family, I showed them this video to illustrate what driving in the UK was like. Mahalo for another masterpiece. Once you go from an R8 manual to an Stronic, you never look back. The manual handicaps the car, and the shifting gate is long and clunky. I've had a V8 and V10 manual, Gen2 Stronic and now Huracan. Manuals are not a performance part, hence why every mundane car and van has one.

I must admit I much prefer the older car in looks the v10 I would e embarrassed to drive as the detailing the inside on the v10 wold be a nightmare
