Is There a Range Difference? | DJI FPV Remote Controller 1 (Black) vs. DJI FPV Controller 2 (Gray)

Ғылым және технология

Continuing to dive deeper into the baffling behavior of the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 that was discovered in the prior videos by performing a similar test using the FPV Controller 1 and the Goggles V1.

Hey Guys. This video was focused on the behavior of the control link but what I also did notice is that the Goggles 2 had higher mbps vs. the Goggles V1 when I turned around and started to head back. This is the same behavior I saw when I was comparing and testing the Goggles V2 vs. Goggles 2 and I think it has to do with the patch antennas that come stock with the Goggles 2. Also, note that in Test 2 (Goggles left in garage), the Controller 1 did not reconnect until I was right outside the garage door. Similar to what we saw with the Controller 2.

Hi Mangorille, Thank you for the extended comparison video. Is there a reason why you used your garage to conduct your test, including closing the garage door? From my perspective and limited experience, and I apologize if I’m totally in left field with what I’m about to say/ask, but hear it goes. I don’t see this test reflecting a true practical environment. The garages seems to contain numerous metal tools that could be effecting the signal and if your garage door is a metal door, than that adds to the poor signal in all cases.

Hey. No problem... It depends on the type of flying you typically do and where you fly. I usually fly around trees, light poles, fences, from inside the car, etc. so this was a representative test for me. The important thing is that I used the same garage and setup in all the tests so I can get a consistent comparison between the Controller 2 and Controller 1.

@@Mangorille You don’t have to, but it would be interesting to see if the results are consistent if you retested everything outside the garage. From my experience different systems behave different depending on the environment! Just my two cents!

Great thanks for doing the test! I was wondering what would the results be if tested with the DJI Controller 2 (gray) connected to the vista module with Googles 2? I think this is the only scenario to be tested by you to be complete. 🙂

Great tests! thank you for this information, on the (DJI FPV Goggles V2 with Remote 1) which component lost entire signal before? the Goggles or the Remote? great advice at the end of the video, I'm also waiting for DJI to fix the bugs on the Remote 2 before I jump on the 03 wagon. Best regards.

The quad got lots of rxloss warnings and failsafed before the video signal was completely lost. However, in practice, I most likely would have crashed given the blocky and choppy video before the failsafe.

@@Mangorille Thanks! And also right on the spot with the real life crash example 👍👍. All my quads have Crossfire but I'm switching them to DJI remote 1 (the Cell Towers in country blows Crossfire away), I saw long time ago that the remote 1 failsafes before the goggles... but recently I started to do more research to give the remote 1 another chance and several people claim that the remote 1 is very solid and failsafes after the Goggles. I'll be performing test with Cell Towers and the Remote 1 (with Vista/Air Unit 1) soon, to be completly sure if Crossfire has to go :( Thanks again! Awesome videos 👍👍👍

@@Mangorille Thats great! Glad to hear that 👍👍. If the DJI remote passes my Cell Tower tests, then I was thinking to keep them both in the quad (DJI Remote for Urban flying, Crossfire for Rural and for Wall penetration). I do long range flying and thats why need the best range and quality signal, could this be achieved by having them both wired and then switching the config in Betaflight? (Activating one and deactivating the other with their UARTs). Thank you 👍👍

@@hknight007 in my experience with indoors real estate tours (and here what matters is penetration, not range), the controller v1 always had better connection than the googles v2 with my vistas. Its a pretty solid controller! Both in connection and build quality. Battery is also great, better than my new rc2 (for the o3). However the connection on my new rc2 is just amazing, it hardly ever looses a bar on the rc link. The smaller form factor is a very nice thing for me, coming from a big playstation gaming background lol But for this rc2 controller the extended sticks is a must. The rc2 feels sooo good with the bigger sticks

the link and transmission systems are separete that is way you lost control link, the googles and the controler bot put out their own tran to the drone and the drone recives both .

  • @Mangorille

On the controller 1, you don’t lose the control link when the goggles are disconnected. It’s the controller 2 that has this problem.

@@Mangorille thanks for confirming, in my own testing I found the same, so it seems its some bug (or unfortunate intended behaviour) introduced in the design of RC2, as opposed to an inherent flaw in the DJI architecture.

  • @Mangorille

    @Mangorille

@@dc-fpv1801 What I suspect is happening is that in the old system the controller would connect directly to the air unit as an independent link whereas in the new system, the controller can run a link directly to the air unit or through the goggles. When the goggles are on, it links through the goggles and then when the goggles lose connection, it has to "reset" and connect directly to the air unit, which takes a couple of seconds or actually doesn't seem to reconnect when you're far away based on the testing I did. Hopefully through firmware updates, they can make it so that the controller always connects directly to the air unit.

Still… We’re not all crazy pilots who fly 2+ kilometers away. The controller2 works perfect for normal people who fly let’s say max 500m away from the take-off point. Every system has his limit but if you fly more or less legally there is never an issue about range.
