Fantastic video man. This is the type of details and testing that nobody else covers. You honestly made me dodge a bullet with the allure of buying that controller to make a simpler build.
I had a signal loss message in my V2 goggles because I was flying behind housing complex and at one kilometer away. I never loss the video feed . It just got a bit blurry on the edges but I did loose the control for a brief moment with the remote . As I moved the stick up there was a dead moment, oh maybe a few seconds and I gained altitude to clear the buildings and all went ok after . No more flying behind big structures. Thank you for all your inputs .

To be fair that’s an awesome testimonial. I think we put too much credit in our gear and get too comfortable then when we try to fly it beyond the limits and succeed it shows how far the hobby has come.

I have a question about O3 Unit. I just bind and fully setup my Geprc Mk5 DC and I just realised - camera angle. I come from DJI FPV so I had the roll to adjust it even mid flight - how do I do it on O3 Unit? 😦
You are crushing it with all the information you are releasing on this system 🎉
Ian, you're my guideline is fpv world. Thanks for your contents. Always independent and usefull.
Your work is remarkable! Thanks Ian!
Thank you for this video, you have answered all the questions I was asking myself about choosing the dji radio or keeping my Tango2. I will therefore continue with my Tango2 and you will gain a new subscriber. Best wishes😜
I really hope the community finds a way to get the full O3 output again. I'm receiving mine at the end of the year, your last video killed some of the hype I had.
Most of the great channels covering RC FPV defer to you on tech analysis. Great content explaining what is often a pretty deep dive into an ever changing design of firmware and hardware offerings. Good on you for holding your niche so well for so long.
Thank you for the explanation. Using mine with the Avata just fine
Thanks a lot for this video. You solve my dilemma what should I use with my DIY o3 drones 👍
I love your teardown videos. You do the things that I won't dare to do until years pass. Back in the day I starting with my first DJI drones, I put Thule amplifiers in conjunction with the RC. Only problem is nobody has torn down this RC so I'm afraid to attempt it. But you my fine sir our fearless! I saw you tore down the goggles and put them back together so it should be a cinch. Could you maybe make that video? Always great to watch you
Interesting, thank you for keep us so well informed!
I was looking for this exact explanation, thanks. not leaving my CRSF setup just yet then, unless they release any firmware updates that keep the RC over video loss. Safety over a clean build !
Thank you as I was debating CF with my Radio Master or DJI. CF is what I'm sticking to. Thank you
Thank you, this is what was on everyone's mind.
Love the content, how far did you go into testing the RC link? I was wondering if before the few seconds are over when the video and RC link are lost, does hitting "your failsafe button" that you have programmed, does the command still go through as soon as the RC link comes back? almost like it stored the command. if that makes sense
ThanQs for sharing this. Great info. I flew with the black dji remote for a long time on the v2 system, and it didn’t have this behavior - and my justification for using it - but, this is a deal breaker, for sure.
Thanks Mads. Its behaviour seems almost designed to work with Return To Home functionality, because when that is triggered the drone will gain altitude and then you will get your control link back after a few seconds, which is what would be necessary anyway to guide back if within LOS or to get a better video signal. Having control far away without video, is that necessary anyway? I think for a fair evaluation of this 'feature' we need to know whether the video link and RC has sufficient range for normal use. From what I've heard the video range is excellent.
Really curious indeed, Ian. Weird behavior! Thanks for all the info! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thx for the detailed explanation 👍. Considering the rc is integrated thru hardware of the 03 and not independent, am I correct in believing even firmware can't fix this and we are stuck with the issue?
Good point, Im quite certain if DJI receives this feedback, they'll work on it so I'll see how this gets addressed in the coming firmware updates.
I used Tango2 Crossfire with 03 thanks video !
When you choose the option of crossfire for example for a Iflight drone as a nazgulz, that's mean that I can connect a Tango 2 or a DJI RC V2 on my AUO3 ? Or I must make something on the quad to connect the DJI RC too?
Great Video, thanks!
thanks so much for the information. i am curious because i do not know it, the same problem is happening and with the black dji radio?
I wish it would be through a separate link because it's so handy to have in one eco system but yes I agree with you. Since I lost my first fpv I prefer to have video and rc link separate.
@Ubiquities
Жыл бұрын
This is huge and something I didn't consider, if you get into a bad area and lose video but have a separate link, normally all you need to do is punch out, get some altitude and you'll be fine. But if the video and Tx are together, you lose video and control at the same time.
Tbs just confirmed i'll have more Tango 2 Pro's before the end of the year, got another crate coming 👌
Thanks for sharing this information 👍👍
jeezo!!! good catch man.
Brilliant. I was just about to set up the DJI Remote till I saw this. I like the way of being able to easily start and stop recording. I don't think you can make the TX12 start and stop recording, can you?? 4 months on since the video is this still the case, or do you think DJI will change the behaviour so they don't drop together! Would this be the same with the Avarta?
Hello. Thank you for the video. what was the version of the firmware before the dest? they say it's fixed in the new version
Hello! Is this issue resolved in V01.02.0000 firmware? Release note says "Optimized the remote controller signal in some scenarios"
One major issue I found with the logical buttons is they don't have a default position. If you power off the remote they remain where they were so you can't assign anything to them and know that it will return to default. So really, you only have two 3 position switches to work with.
While people focus on the goggles in regard of backwards compatibility for the Caddx Vista, any info if the FPV Remote V2 will be compatible with the Caddx Vista?
Wow! This is great! ELRS for the win!
So if in long range flight, you lose your signal say, if the drone has a decent gps unit, and is set to return to home. Presumably once it starts flying back, the goggles will reconnect and then you can re fly like Normal? Just trying to work out my set up from my next drone after my FPV and it seems to make sense to use the goggles V2 and the controller. Brilliant videos and much appreciate the help I get from them all.
That should be fixed from DJI, on the other hand its not a deal breaker for me, i love my TX16s with AG01 Gimbals + FrSky Grand Lotus Stick Ends there is nothing over it!

I am quite new to fpv hobby but what is the point of having a radio signal on other quads than Dji when you loose video? is not going to return home I suppose? or is hoover in place? I know You can install RTH on other quads ect but how reliable is that? Great video as always.
I just read this on the DJI forum. Interesting "The FPV Remote 2 & the Motion Controller, neither support PD charging. Using a USB-A to USB-C cable will solve this problem, you will also discover that the Assistant 2 App will not connect to the controllers if you use a USB-C to USB-C cable. So if you're using a Mac, you will need the USB-A adapter. With this you should have no issues."
Can you change from 16:9 to 4:3 during flight with this controller? I fly with a Vista in 16:9 because I feel like it's more immersive, then I switch to 4:3 at the end because it's easier to land. I do this with the black DJI controller's toggle wheel, to access the menu. I just have to stop recording for it to let me switch. Can the grey controller do the same with the O3?
Another great video!
Just curious. Is there a way to setup in the modes tab of Betaflight 4.4 rc3 with the DJI Remote 2 so I could arm and disarm my quad like the Dji Avata does in manual mode, using one of the momentary switches. Thanks for any help
Another question: Is the 5 second loss the same with the Caddx Vista and the 1st generation DJI FPV Remote Controller??
Oh I was thinking of something really cool. How awesome would be in the controller setup (for controller 2) in the goggles to be able to change the behavior of the buttons, like “momentary”, “single press latch”, “double press latch” and “single + double press latch”. Since it is anyway inplement it for the Avata drone. This way we would be able to do more with few buttons and also have same switches configuration as with our avata’s. Also would be cool if the system could forward the head tracking of the goggles 2 in two of the free sbus channels for cool gimbal control 🤙🏼
Hi Thank you Do you think they will make it backwards compatible with the fpv remote 1 the black one?
Thanks for all the hard work. Just 2 comments though, RC link return might still get you to initiate RTH in case of video loss. My one good argument with the use of the DJI RC is it is the same setup as the AVATA, I’ve seen a lot of good reviews with the AVATA with no RC issues.
@sgtmudkipz
Жыл бұрын
The Avata is sweet. If the video signal gets too choppy the drone autoswitches to normal/angle mode and hovers in place w/ GPS (can also be configured to RTH).
@CoreyFPV

Yeah, can confirm your comment. I've just ordered the MOZ7 with just 03 for use with the C2. My Avata has been everywhere you can think of and it's only gone into hover in place once and totally lost and landed once. I fly it in woods, forests, bando's, concrete car parks and it's been solid. I do have a Tango 2 Pro though, so can fit a Crossfire if flying the MOZ7 causes any issues. I'm also an ex-DJI FPV flyer and the range on that was awesome and had zero control or signal loss issues when flying that.
Great video, but I have a question, I’m trying to configure fail safe but it does not trigger if I turn off the remote2 how do I make it trigger?
Thanks for sharing!
So I have a question. I'm having a strange behavior on multiple quads with both O3 and updated Vistas. Whenever I'm flying NEAR myself, I get a momentary RXLOSS flash up on the OSD. Most quads don't actually feel like there's any interruption in control, one quad with GPS and has zero delay to initiate GPS Rescue, twitches when the RX Loss comes up on the OSD. My thinking was that it was on 5.8 Ghz when it was near me and as soon as I ranged away it changed to 2.4 Ghz? That small channel change causes a miniscule RX Loss? I never get the RX loss when I range out, even extreme long range. During all this the RC Signal quality is always maxed out. Any thoughts on this behavior?
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!
I love your videos and the technical approach you take. Although I'm glad you pointed out what happens on video loss, your conclusion to not buy this controller is one that I disagree with. Fine if you want to install a separate system like ELRS, but I want to eliminate that additional step and extra antennas to deal with. The two things you point out that you lose with the signal loss is to put the system into failsafe manually or do a punchout. Neither of those make any sense to me if I have no video feed. Putting the system to full throttle when I can't see the orientation makes no sense, and pushing my failsafe button is not necessary as I will program betaflight to do that for me. Others have pointed out that this controller and an 03 air unit have superior range to my original air unit, and the range, game style controller, and elimination of another system are the reasons I'll upgrade my entire DJI FPV system and including this new controller.
Just a quick question about charging the remote controller 2. I've got something going on that's kind of unusual. I can't seem to charge the remote 2 with a USB C to USB C cable with a high-speed charger 30 watt -100 watt watt. I have even flipped the connectors over just to make sure. But it WILL work with this cable if I have my digital tester between the charger and the remote 2 and its showing 4.8 volts at 1.7 amps. A USC A to USB C works fine. Very Odd.
For the avata which uses the same system I always lost video link with rc strength being full bars. Curious how it would drop out first on this unit. Seems like a simple firmware update for them though 😎.
@tienduy12345

same here, i never lost a single bar of control link on the Avata, curious how long it'll take for DJI to fix this.
Is there a chance you lose RC Signal before Video? Specially new O3 air unit has longer distance than the old ones. “Lets say 1mw crossfire” is it still better than the new RC?
So what about the best settings in the GPS rescue/ sanity cgecks tab in betaflight when you have a GPS module?
So the range with transmitter2 is the same or less than using with the plastic dji fpv or avata ? Vs 03 airunit . ? Who actually flies that far they lose video feed ?
@madstech How can I set my remote to record and stop recording? Thank you for this video. I will get another remote and receiver as I was going to use the Remote 2.
Great informational video! Do you know if, as of today in November 2023, this issue has been resolved?
Hope u don’t mind me asking but do u know how to bind the controller 2 to iflight defender 25, ( has the 03 dji air unit ) have installed correct firmware to the controller, thank u in advance. Love your shows.
This is interesting, thanks for sharing your findings. I can’t remember where I saw it but, there were some DJI employees saying the radio link far exceeds the video link capabilities. If that’s true it’s strange that they would do a setup like this.
Great video. Got a question for you I got a lflight evoque 5 with air unit 03 brand new and suppose to be bind and fly. This drone drop few times not even 80 meter in from of me and with my DJI FPV and AVATA i never ever had any issue . What i am missing here or suppose to do and is it gone happen again with other control ? Why no other company can do a proper RTH beside DJI those drone are not cheap I like to film beautiful and fast footage and above water and i got the evoque because of the speed and stronger frame and freestyle capability and absorb crash better than DJI . Thanks a lots
Is this still the case in the latest O3 firmware? It's very tempting to stay within the dji environment which seems to be DJI preference, seems strange they would push you to secondary controller requirements just with a stilly setting oversight.
so is it possible to use DJI goggles v2 with a third party remote controller like Radiomaster TX16S MKII and DIY drone?
Do you have any information on the compatibility of goggle2 and air unit V1 or vista?
That’s very good!,
Amigo , o betaflight não reconhece o controle 2 da DJI , configuração e bind ok na Unit o3 Sabe me dizer uma provável solução ?
I prefer full size sticks on my Tx16. I’ll probably use crossfire like I currently do. I have a hard time pinching on anything less than full size gimbals
Thank you for this information its very usfull , was this the same on the first DJI FPV system ?

Great information! How is this behavior different from the Caddx with the black remote? Can this be a software update from DJI to retain control link with video loss?
@stevefoster258
Жыл бұрын
Is there a difference? I like my black DJI transmitter with my Vista's and Air Unit's, and I am dropping my Crossfire stuff😛
Just curious, does the DJI Larger Black fpv controller have have this same problem.
Would it still be better than a FRSKY Reciever and a radio? I feel like the DJI Controller might still be better than FRSKY
Thank you!! This actually sucks, as in those five second most probable that drone will end up crashing somewhere Or is it possible to set the gps to return home if controller looses signal? What about transmitting from controller 2 to a nirmal crossfire reciever?
After the 5 seconds and the remote kicks back in does the rth automatically shut off or will it keep coming home?
I can not use goggles and would like to use the O3 with a screen through the DJI RC with an integrated display. Is it possible to use the O3 only with the DJI RC without goggles, and is the air unit's SBUS output standard enough to be compatible with ArduPilot? Thank you.!
But I thought by using a external RC signal you lose all telemetry information? Is this true? I fly long range and I like to have home direction, gps latitud and longitude
So this apply to bind and fly products?
So, is this not an issue on Avata or the DJI FPV? If not, why is it on the O3? Was planning to use the RC2 when I got an O3.
My followup question is: how to make Betaflight RTH functionality as reliable as DJI drones?
Is there a way to use the radiomaster boxer with the dji 03?
Does the original FPV radio act this way?
Is there any way to link the controller2 with my geprc cinelog25? I just purchased it but they built it for the old dji fpv controller
Wasn't this the same case with the original DJI FPV Remote also? - I'll definitely be sticking with ELRS after investing so much into it
@MaxRovensky

Yeah, this is how the original system worked as well
Pretty sure this works the same as the black controller and Caddx. I’ve dealt with it since day one, it’s a rare issue and I pay attention to the mbps, if it drops to less than 5 to 7 mbps, I punch out to regain better connection. The mbps is my version of rssi.

Exactly...... this is nothing new to the people that have been using the DJI radio for the past couple years like myself.
Wow this is crazy! This seems like a massive drawback! Can they update this via software update to keep Rc standalone or at least reconnect after .1 seconds? Rc link on goggles is shown as a seperate signal indicator so this setting seems completely pointless. How long does it take for video recovery on the new o3? Current air unit seems to take quite some time to recover video after signal loss
hey mate , would you recommend flying with crossfire instead of dji remote controller 2 ? Do you think crossfire has as strong a range performance? planing to get the nazgule but not sure what smater. keeping it dji or using crossfire with the tango 2

Crossfire has one of the strongest performances of range there is in an RC link. Also ExpressLRS does too
is this fixed with the new update?
What happens if you've set the quad to GPS rescue and then regain (unknowingly) control? Does the GPS rescue abort? Or only if you do certain stick movements?

Do you think this might have something to do with the method you used to test? Doesnt the controller talk to the goggles and then to the drone? Would moving the goggles only away from the drone cause strange test results because of the way it communicates with the air unit? Could we try a real world type of test where we move the drone away from the goggles and controller?

After 9m, we have some update about this problem or all the same!?
Is this an issue that DJI can fix with firmware? This sounds like a safety issue as well as a drone loss situation. I never had an FPV drone that could just lose RC Link for 5 seconds and not crash. Ken thought his BEC failed. Even with GPS rescue set his drone would have been on a dangerous mission because he would have not been able to regain control.
Without Gps how can altitude be determined on the air unit in the event of a failsafe you have it go to say 200Ft and RTH. How would that work? Or you don't have the option of RTH because of no gps?

I am currantly trying to connect my FPV controller to my 03 Air unit. Everything should be connected correctly, as the ribbon-cable that followed with the O3 unit connected perfectly to the FC. The only problem is that the controller imputs don't show up in Betaflight. Any ideas as to why? NB: I have changed my controll-protocoll to SBUS baud fast in the googles
How about the scroll wheel?
Is the original remote compatible?
My DJI RC failsafed today with the O3 while the video feed stayed perfect, and it was only about 100m away from me. I have no idea why. Any thoughts about this?

Odd that.
DJI's FPV Drone (aka The Potato (which I still love)) almost always had a much better control link than video link.* I'd be amazed if DJI couldn't fix this control problem on the O3. While DJI could fix this problem, will they? Like many people, I love and hate DJI. DJI makes great stuff but they sure can be slimy at times. I hated I had to "activate" my action camera before I could use it. Why? Thanks for another interesting video. *The control link quality is logged. It rarely dropped below 100% on any of my flights even when the video quality was awful.

Yeah my dji fpv drone was also pretty great at recovering, helped me learn not to loose video signal when I got my new fpv drone with o3 air unit, lost video signal and control signal with it and didn't wanna fly back up even with rescue mode enabled
Can the failsafe be an update firmware?
