I’m 53 years old. Floaters have ruined my life for the past 20 plus years. I the past 5 years it has been so bad that I avoid reading, computer work , driving and simply spending time outside. Half of the time I see 20/20 but the other half of the time is 20/40 when a cluster of floaters crosses my vision. I had RK and cataract surgery in both eyes and a shunt in the right eye. I still take glaucoma drops in the left eye. Just had a floater only vitrectomy in the left eye 6 weeks ago. After that the pressure was out of control for 2 weeks. I had to take diamox and had my cornea tapped twice. Now the pressure is normal but my astigmatism changed probably due to taping the cornea. Just whent to see my optometrist and she was able to get me to see 20/20 - 2. But I noticed the vision was distorted a bit. Not sure why. Waiting to get my new lens. But I can already drive a lot easier. Floaters in my right eye are still bothersome but I’m hoping that my brain can eventually adapt. If the distorted vision in my left eye clears up, I would consider getting the right eye done in the future.

For those of us that have floaters due to myopia at a "young" age, YAG doesn't work. I've had the YAG surgery and it didn't get rid of my problem floaters due to floaters being close to the retina. It actually made my floaters worse. Also, the 20/20 vision is only accurate when my eyes aren't moving. Not out in the real world when your eyes are constantly in motion, like while driving, or working, or reading anything. My floaters blur out words and small details as well as making it harder for my eyes to focus on anything more than 10 feet away. Half the time I miss spots on my white car while trying to wash it outside. Floaters have changed everything about me. I can't tell you the last time I was genuinely happy about anything... It's a disease of the eyes and mind with zero relief 24/7 365.

Thank you for this comment -- I was saying similar things out loud to myself as I was watching this. I/we DON'T have 20/20 vision as far as floaters are concerned. The floaters blur out details on faces, blur out words on screens, trick you into seeing things that aren't there... they affect one's quality of life, and depression sets in when we realize we're powerless to do anything about them!

Also, dirty lenses on your glasses are not a floater's best friend. I strictly wear contacts now. I also cut out drinks with sugar/high sodium content and that helped too. Side note: I highly recommend taking Ashwagandha. It will help take the edge off of any anxiety and stress the floaters are giving you. I take it daily in the morning in gummy form. Helps keep me level headed.

My own view as someone who has recently suffered a PVD and now left with large floaters is that Optometrists and eye doctors need to view floaters in the same way as any sort of damage to the eye. It affects vision so why would they think it could be ignored. 20/20 visiion means nothing to those with multiple floaters.

When you have a surgical vitrectomy and the surgeon removes the vitreous gel from the center of the eye, do you inject a replacement to keep the eye from collapsing onto itself or does the body produce its own to replace what was removed? I just developed some floaters last week and they are annoying! I constantly feel like I have a lash stuck under a contact lens because that is what I see even though it doesn’t hurt that much. They do also make reading difficult because often as I focus the floater will block the word on the page or screen. Small type and music charts are particularly bothersome. I have committed to giving it some time to see if I can deal with them but I am guessing that at some point I would like to see if YAG laser will address the problem and save me from retiring before I would like to.

Yes, Vaseline is the perfect analogy! I have a big one of that sort in my left eye. When it sweeps across an object that I‘m looking at, it can even deform the shape of it while moving across. It’s all very annoying, but I would never risk going completely blind from an operation.

The first time, my very black Weiss was broken up into smaller black things but I was left with a slimy moving haze. I was told it should sink out of my vision and over a few months it did somewhat but now it has returned. I don’t know if there are any options to clear the slime effect. I feel like I’ve cried tons or haven’t slept ALL the time. I Feel like I am looking through a fish bowl of moving dirty water.

Like most people a white background or blue sky makes them noticeable but also with me a grey sky and a lightish grey background makes them noticeable as well. I’d love to read but sometimes the floaters just turn me off the idea. It’s black print on a white background. And it’s bad enough with Blepharitis sometimes but with the added floaters it just drives me crazy. The floaters don’t blur the letters or anything like that but they just drive me to distraction sometimes that’s all. Just wish I didn’t have the little buggers . But would I rather go blind ? You’ve got to be kidding me. Go blind? No Way. .......... Do you have to eat Pineapple or can you take Bromelian supplements? I have been going to a retina specialist for the past two months, I began perceiving floaters and became annoyed and I went in to the retina specialist as it was so bothersome. Come to find out I have lattice degeneration and about a dozen holes in my peripheral retina on both eyes. He recommended we laser around the holes to basically weld down the retina to prevent detachment. I have gone for three laser treatments so far and have about 3 to go , just had one done this past Monday actually . The day of and day after there is some aching sensation and then some days later it begins itching. I am only 30 years old and my floaters have had me debating getting a vitrectomy just for floaters. My floaters are a combination of vitreous syneresis and fibers from the many holes in my retina, luckily my macula is fine and I don’t have any vision changes aside from bothersome floaters.

I had ICL surgery years ago. Before I had the ICL surgery, they did YAG laser on me. It feels like someone is snapping a rubber band on your eyeball! And there's no anesthetic with YAG laser surgery. They hold your head in a death grip against the laser machine, so you do not move because it hurts! The machine is just like the machine they use when looking into your eyes, I had to go back later for cateract surgery because the idiot.. I mean doctor, placed the lens too high. I was told they were no longer using YAG laser before ICL surgery. Your so lucky if your have to really look for them! I have dementors in my eyes, and yes, I'm going to see my ophthalmologist soon! LOL I was an optician back in the day during college and our younger daughter was an optician before becoming a teacher and deaf interpreter. So we both cringe at some if this stuff.

I have been complaining about floaters for years. However, I have to be honest and point out that the results of the survey you referenced almost certainly has more to do with the fact that average people are tremendously and famously terrible at interpreting statistical risks. When an average results in something as ghastly as people being willing to accept an 11% risk of death for what is not a life-saving surgery, that is a red flag that overconfidence bias dominates the results.

Why do you think you have to look for your floaters but some people see them all of the time?
