Is the Valve Index Worth it in 2023?

How is this thing already pushing four years old? It certainly doesn't seem like it's that old!

    You forgot to mention the repair-ability of the headset, the system compatibility, the upgrade module support, the lack of proprietary software / account requirements, and the quality of the lenses, by no means is it the best specced headset but those things may be important for people to be aware of, especially for people who don't use Windows or have privacy concerns with competitors software (thinking of the whole facebook / meta account debacle here) but you did go over some of the main things which the vast majority non-tech people would be most interested in, great content hope to be seeing more from you soon

    Hey - 5 months later what are your thoughts? Do you like the index? To me it seems like it's still the best choice on the market even 4 years later. The lower resolution is welcomed especially when paired with 144 hz capability. Can't stand 90 hz headsets.

    I wish I could just easily buy it 😭 I either have to save up on going into neighbor country + the cost of index itself or find someone who could bring it to my country, which may sound like an easy way but I don’t have anyone who could do that for me. Right now forced to enjoy my Pico 4 (I’m tired of little issues and imperfections this Chinese piece of tech has, also fucking tired of recalibrating it to use with vive trackers)

    @@SlampthChompth honestly I really love it. I've constantly used it almost daily. I haven't used my quest 2 since. Having a DIRECT connection to your pc via display port is infinitely better than wireless. The quality control things that usually get said about the controllers, I've also not had an issue. No drift currently, no tracking issues, and nothing has broken as of now. Also I constantly run it at 120hz. 144hz is insane, and I love it. But I still drop to 120hz for stuff like beat saber because it makes it harder to full swing. And in general my pc won't be able to push those frames for every game due to my current build. But when I can use it, it feels honestly insane to me. Even if not everyone can notice it ^^ I will say on the resolution part. It is much better with pixel density and all. But it's hard to find the sweet spot within your first few hours or sessions of using it. So you'll end up adjusting a lot until you find it. Then it'll just kinda, click in a way where everything looks much better lol

    hi, just wanted to say that you did a great job on this video for starters. as far as long term index use goes, i have been using the same index headset since late 2019. the headset fairs well in most cases but i did want to touch on a few things about hardware or system requirements for the other people that might watch this. firstly if you are an avid beatsaber player, you might want to consider some additional facial padding for the index from steams site. additionally that if you have used another headset such as the meta quest 2, expect a huge change in the weight of the controllers. secondly vrchat users, i just want to let you all know that the vrchat takes a fair amount of cpu power, but not in the way that you might think. make sure that your pc has a fairly nice L3 cache for the cpu as this is what will bear most of the load while in vrchat. over all the index is still in my opinion the best consumer headset on the market for best PCVR experiences. over all @Jacobfov your doing an amazing job keep at it!

    Hey, I have question, idk how long you have your valve index but I am saving money for it right now and I need to ask. I see lots of videos on youtube talking about how it breaks and how easy is to berak it. I am talking about cable, controlers (mainly drift) and somethink like "red led" on base station when they dont conect. Did you expiriense any of this? if so, how hard is to get replacement or somethink like this. Thanks!

  • @Jacobfov

    @Jacobfov

    Жыл бұрын

    There is a cable clip on the back that tends to snap off, and once that happens the cable seems to go out soon after. This can be avoided by using velcro to hold the cable where the clip used to be, or by getting a 3d printed clip once it snaps off. Controllers seem to have a lot of issues, but like I said never had any with mine. I can't really tell if I just got lucky with mine, or if other people just don't take good care of theirs. I don't know how common the base station thing is, I don't hear about it as often as the other two, but I have seen it in person. If any of these things happen while the headset is under warranty (1 year in US, I believe it's 2 in the EU) Valve is really good about replacing them if you just contact support. They're also known to occasionally replace things out of warranty, but I wouldn't count on that. Ifixit sells genuine parts to fix stuff yourself if something happens outside of warranty.

    since the price of the headset never adjusted, i feel like its a mistake to still buy the index. yes, lighthouse tracking etc, but even standalone devices like the quest 3 give you 90% of the overall index pack for half the price and the hmd itself, is better in almost every way. the only leg up is still the field of view, but well, it depends on how important that is for you. if only tried the ps5vr2 so far and never once felt like i needed a way better fov, i didnt even notice the fov untill i was asked how i feel about it and directed to look to the sides.. but iam a glasses wearer from early on childhood and all my life was used to use my head instead of my eyes. whats important to me is: SDE visibility should be minimal or not there and no compression artefacts. so index is out as is the quest 3

If i end up not buying it, then in at best half a year the next headset will come out and it will be a speced down index with only not having to rely on cables. what shall i do, get it now and make your next headsets awesome or forsake them to mediocracy ?

    Hi Am wondering as I already have an og htc vive but wanted to upgrade to an index due to the increased headset comfort , better resolution and screen door and mainly though due to the increase field of view. Apparently is it’s supposed to be 130 degrees vs the 110 compared to the vive, However I have modded my vive so I don’t have a front face pad and I put my eyes very close to the lenses and wow the fov is better like by 10-20 degrees - it’s basically a full fov vertically and horizontally is good compared to any other headset I’ve tried but I haven’t tried the index yet but am wondering have you ever tried the original vive without or with a reduced face pad and how do you compare it to the index’s fov ? A few people have mentioned the fov with the modded vive is almost the same as the index with the facepad on but am wondering if you by any chance have tried removing the facepad and looking through the lenses of the index to increase the fov and is it quite a lot bigger ? Would really appreciate your reply . Cheers

  • @Jacobfov

    @Jacobfov

    Жыл бұрын

    So I've never used an original Vive, but I'll try my best to answer the rest of your questions. So the field of view with the Index is going to be bigger without the face pad, and you can buy third party thinner facial interfaces for this purpose. If the main reason you're upgrading for is the field of view, you might want to look into a Pimax headset. I've heard they can be annoying to setup at first, but everyone I've talked to that uses one loves them. The field of view on even their lower end models is some of the largest around, and over an OG Vive everything else would be quite a big upgrade as well.

    @@Jacobfov Hi and really appreciate the the detailed reply - the pimax headsets are a pain to setup and an guesing there will be a lot of tweaking for each individual game so am not sure to be honest that’s why I was thinking of the index - it’s good to know that I can mod the index as I couldn’t find anything on reddit etc on this issue so am guessing that if I use a reduced facepad I’ll get an even larger fov than the 130 degrees that people were talking about perhaps ? Cheers

Didn't feel the need to upgrade my headset, because i had to upgrade my PC first. Well, now I've upgraded to high end hardware (new everything, rtx 4090, high speed ram, NVME, etc.), I've been on the fence since december about whether to buy a headset or not... I just keep thinking, I'll pull the trigger on a high end headset and then 2 months from now Valve releases the Deckard. We all know that valves headset will be competitive at the high-end at a fair price for the features... So, Yah, I could buy the pimax crystal, but that think is a monsterous size. I could buy the bigscreen beyond (when it comes out in a few months), but the FOV on that thing.... I could buy the Varjo Aero... but the price... Jesus. And I refuse to support facebook/meta in any way ever, so the quests are out... So I just keep waiting and waiting and waiting.

A lot of my friends on VRChat have been urging me to upgrade to an Index and since I've got a lot of cash coming in soon, I may just pull the trigger on one fairly soon seeing as all I want is a stable pc based VR set that has zero forced Facebook integration.

You'd have an OP kit lmfao But then again that's about 3 - 4k spent. I'm very stupid with my money though so I'd probably do that, and hey at least for such a high quality headset (although minus the addons) its down to about 990 now. It was once 2k in preorder iirc.

Is it worth to take the extra 500 bucks and go with the vive pro 2? The FOV is something important to me and so far the Index seems to be the best middle ground option. Just be warned Pimax has a reputation for having really strange issues.

    Since the Index has never been available for sale in my country unless I buy from scalpers on eBay, I'm a bit bitter and that will likely color my response, but before that I will say that I agree with most of your points. And, as a VR headset for VRChat and Neos VR, the Valve Index is a very good option due to finger sensing and the possibility to upgrade to full body tracking. That said, however… "If you're looking to get into PCVR, this is the best option, especially for the price." -- can you elaborate how you arrived at "especially for the price"? I mean, if you compare to the Vive Pro 2, then sure… The HP Reverb G2 v2 costs $400, which is less than half of the $1000 for the full Valve Index kit. Is lighthouse tracking, finger sensing, slightly better mic and moderately larger FOV really worth more than TWICE the price, considering that the G2 also has better displays, clearer lenses, same headphones, and better comfort (lighter & cooler) compared to the Index? Headsets such as the current Pimax & Varjo offerings are not really worth a comparison because they are tailored to the simulation player base, not so much general PCVR. More high-end PCVR alternatives to the Index are coming in 2023, as well. I'd say that the HP Reverb G2 v2 is a better headset for those looking to get into PCVR, unless you already know you want to do full body tracking, or you want to get into the prosumer/enthusiast price range. The Pico 4 is also a great option if wireless seems appealing to you. The Valve Index is really starting to show its age, mainly when it comes to display, lens quality, and size/weight. But it has been a good product during these 4 years :-)

  • @Jacobfov

    @Jacobfov

    Жыл бұрын

    So I actually have a Reverb G2, and honestly I wouldn't recommend it for someone just getting into PCVR. I'd actually argue that it is a headset tailored to the simulation playerbase as well. The controllers that come stock with that headset are absolutely abysmal. Everything about them feels cheap, and the tracking on them is just flat out bad. If I didn't have Index controllers to pair with that headset I wouldn't enjoy using it. Assuming someone decides to buy Index controllers and lighthouses to pair with the G2 they'd be approaching the price of the Index. Then you're left with having to worry about if your controllers position is calibrated correctly. Granted it isn't that hard to calibrate, but I can't imagine someone just getting into PCVR would want to deal with that. Comfort wise I personally prefer the Index. I have a Reverb G2 Omnicept, and the comfort between it and the regular G2 might differ, so take this with a grain of salt. The Index is a bit heavier, but I honestly don't notice it with how much better the headstrap is compared to my G2. I wouldn't really say the G2 is cooler, but I also have a bunch of extra stuff inside of mine. The lenses definitely fog up more often on my Reverb though. To me it definitely seems more fit for a sim rig out of box than it does for general VR usage.

    The Valve Index lacks three very important features 1. Eye tracking. 2. Adjustable Eyepieces for people who wear eyeglasses. 3. A higher resolution. When these features are added to this headset I'll buy one. 🧐

    Eye tracking can actually be added to any headset that lacks it with EyeTrackVR! Not really sure what you mean by the adjustable eyepieces, but prescription lens inserts are sold for most popular VR Headsets. Can't really do much about the resolution unfortunately.

    And heads up about refresh rate, all the vr 2.0 hmd's are 90hz. That experimental 144 is straight but the index has a far lower resolution than a lot of its peers, 144 is going to be a problem with something high resolution. Another thing, hmd's these don't have a sweet spot, god rays and FAR FAR FAR less screen door effect

  • @Jacobfov

    On a mobile based headset it would be a problem. It's crazy that the Quest 2 even supports 120hz, but there is a reason the Pico 4, Quest Pro, and Vive XR Elite all run at 90. That being said 120 or 144 shouldn't be a problem on a reasonably powerful PC. The Vive Pro 2 has a much higher resolution than the Index, and it can run at 120. The Pimax 5k super can run at 180hz, and their upcoming Reality 12k is going to be able to run at 200. Both of those headsets have higher resolutions that the Vive Pro 2, and by extension the Index as well. In my opinion a modern day PCVR headset launching with 90hz displays would be inexcusable. Pc hardware is only going to keep getting better, and there should at least be an option to run at higher refresh rates.

    @@Jacobfov When I had a quest 2 it was not a real 120hz and then now im reading an the app has to support it?? and I know why the pico 4, quest pro and xr elite only do 90, their panels. my hmd right now only does 90. original quest came through at 72. And I know what the Vive software says but go ahead, try extreme mode at damn near 5k and see what happens. Pimax's 5k ain't really nowhere near 5k. Good ol' Pimax jargon, and no wonder you included the buy back program when you showed the 8kx. You really believe a 12kx exists? No, it was a move to get 8kx sales going. Theyre showing off the Crystal instead of the hmd they had an event for over a year ago(12kx). So if they never come out with a 12kx, they don't have to honor their buy back program. Tell me why Crystal doesn't have any trade in program at all? Cuz it's a farce. And you gotta understand about these refresh rates. ill take 90 over absolutely no sweet spot, god rays, and hardly any screen door effect over the opposite of this. A really low resolution screen, screen door effect, god rays, a super tiny sweet spot with a blurry mess as soon as you leave it but really smooth 144hz gameplay even though its hard to see. I know for a fact you put on an index and it becomes HARD to read

  • @Jacobfov

    @@D-money813 1440p is not a "really low resolution". If you have tried an Index and text was that hard to read for you then clearly you didn't have the headset adjusted correctly. I own a Reverb G2, which has a better resolution than the Index. Yes, text does look better, but the only time you'd actually notice that is when playing stuff like flight sims which have a lot of small text. Normal sized text looks absolutely fine. Despite owning a G2 I still prefer to use my Index on most games, as the 144hz makes quite a bit of difference over 90hz. Pimax as a company is sketchy at best, but at the very least the Crystal does exist, and the headsets they already have out certainly do as well. And the Crystal still has a refresh rate of 160. I'm not sure why you went on the whole tangent about the buyback program. And yes, the Pimax 5k does not have a resolution near 5k, but it still has a resolution higher than the Vive Pro 2, so I don't know why you said to try running it anywhere near 5k since it "ain't really nowhere near 5k". I don't know what HMD you currently own, but with it being 90hz I'd imagine it's either an original Vive Pro/Eye, or a Reverb G2. I also don't know what kinds of games you play. If you play mainly flight sims I kind of understand why you have so many problems with the Index. Granted, it seems like most of them come from an incorrectly adjusted headset.

    @@Jacobfov These days on a hmd, 1440p is kind of low resolution. I definitely had my index on right. I went on a tangent about pimax because you mentioned the 12kx doing 200hz. 5k is 1440p vs Vive Pro 2's 2448 on it's highest setting. Think about it, we just got a gpu that can do 4k 120hz, that hmd cannot be 5k at 180. And I have a Vive Pro but I use the Varjo Aero. Used to have an Index, Vive Pro 2, Quest 1, 2, Vive, and Gear VR. And the Aero is just a measly 90hz. Leagues above the Index

    The controllers suck for most of the vr games, steam vr runs like crap with the Index, and the glare with the lenses is annoying, and it's a wired headset, no it's not worth getting the Valve Index in 2023, get a Quest 2 with a elite strap and battery or wait for the Quest 3 when that comes out later this year

    Believe it or not a headset being wireless isn't a negative! There's a reason most high end headsets are. I don't really know what issues you have with SteamVR, but surely you wouldn't complain about it's performance, and then go on to recommend a headset that has to have additional programs open alongside it to run PCVR applications.

    Maybe if you're looking to switch to something else from an Index sure. But if you don't already have base stations and controllers you'd have to spend close to 1600 to get a bigscreen beyond up and running. Most people are going to be better off buying an Index for 1000 and putting an extra 300 dollars towards full body tracking. Alternatively the Quest Pro is down to 1000 now too, which also comes with tracking and controllers that are good from what I've heard.
