Is the Trump presidency causing irreparable damage to America?

America has never seen anything like this. Time and again, Donald Trump has attacked the very fabric of US democracy. He has called the press ‘the enemy of the American people’. He says that claims that Russia interfered in the US election are a hoax. And that the FBI - currently investigating his campaign - should be personally loyal to the president.
And it’s not just political institutions Trump is damaging, his opponents say: in America he has stoked racial tension, coddled Wall Street and given succour to the gun lobby. On the world stage, he’s alienated key allies, slapped $50 billion in tariffs on China that may spark off a trade war, and appointed the hawkish John Bolton, who has advocated regime change in Iran and North Korea, as national security adviser.
If Trump is a new kind of threat, the big question is whether the damage he is doing to America will be permanent. Will the country that survived two world wars, the Cold War and the attacks of 9/11 really be put off its stride by a reality show host who could be gone in less than three years’ time? Or is Trump dismantling the robust system that has kept America united and irreparably damaging its standing as the most powerful nation on earth?
But perhaps this is all liberal hand-wringing. Could Trump, in fact, be that rarest of things - a politician who delivers on his promises - and prove to be the reformer the American electorate voted for?
To examine the political health and standing of the United States at this crucial moment, Intelligence Squared brought together Ronan Farrow, former US government adviser and journalist, who has just been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for breaking the Harvey Weinstein scandal; Mark Lilla, the American political scientist who hit the headlines last year with an article arguing that it is the left’s preoccupation with identity politics that opened the door to Trump’s victory; Lionel Shriver, award-winning novelist and commentator; and Brian Klaas, an expert on authoritarianism who claims that with every autocratic tweet Trump is edging America away from its democratic norms.

I hope...he will do a really serious investigative report on when and why each party lost supporters and where they gained supporters. We keep telling Dems: You didn't have workable policies that stakeholders could embrace . And it just goes over their heads. They keep beating the drum on personality, etc, when people have started voting on POLICIES. Look carefully at the Dem policies and analyze why people don't accept them.

I think most countries recognise that a strong middle class ensures a strong, sustainable economy and when the proverbial shit hits the fan, a strong middle class ensures that the economy pulls through faster and becomes strong again in a shorter period of time. Sadly, ever since Reagan the Republican party has been paying lip service to the working class and solely focused on the campaign contributions that would keep them in office. Or perhaps it is worse; maybe they do believe that privatisation of all institutions is the answer. We should all be sub-contractors with no benefits or pensions. If only we give the corporations enough money through tax breaks and incentives they will want to create jobs. But that is NOT how the economy functions. You need a purchasing base, a healthy middle class, in order to support those jobs and most American companies know that base is dwindling. I am not American either and there is not enough money in the world that would convince me to move to America. In my humble opinion it is a dying democracy. The core of America has been perverted beyond recognition and just like the USSR, blind faith in the system, because it worked until now, is what will cause some form of collapse. Don't get me wrong, I am not suggesting America will go away, I am simply saying that those who feel miserable in American society right now, won't feel so alone in 10-15 years time. The majority of America will probably be miserable at that point.

Hamid it seems to me that all the us middle class does is ridicule and stomp on the poor! The heck with the middle class for helping the poor! The Gov needs to lift the middle class by reinstating early 1960s tax rates onto the rich! To alleviate the middle class burden of paying for everything! Then the Gov needs to reinstate programs like they had in the 60s sending gang leaders to college! Student loans need Gov refinancing! And states need to put job training programs into high schools so that every graduate comes out with a job skill! Or enough skills to continue in apprenticeships! With equitablexrates of taxation more job training programs should be implemented aimed just at the poor! Our laws such as,disabled folk who became disabled after age 24, need changing! So that these folks can save more than 2000$ without having to report their gains to housing food stamps etc! Give people the freedom and responsibility of getting themselves out of poverty! I believe this is a,federal obligation!,you cant expect the middle class, indirectly to want to help the, poor!

Hamid when I said let the federal Gov give people the freedom and responsibility of getting themselves out of poverty! I meant, they can do this by changing the disabled savings laws! With certain restrictions attached! And any other laws impoverishing people! But the poor must believe in their own abilities and learn if needed, ways of getting themselves out of poverty! Right now it's hard to succeed in the us if u have any type of physical and mental disability! And classes dont generally understand each other culturally!

Interestingly, many veterans (myself included) are pretty liberal-minded. We are pro-gun, but support stricter regulations that the NRA vehemently oppose. Most of us are pro-choice. Many of us support LGBT rights, or just don't understand the opposition to treating every person equally. From a veteran's perspective, especially with many of us having served in Iraq and Afghanistan, basing ANY political decisions on religion seems ludicrous.

@@stephj9378 Clinton received 65,844,954 votes (48.2%) , vs Trump's 62,979,879 (46.1%), a margin of almost 2.9 million votes. In the midterm election, the Democratic House candidates had an 8,805,130 vote lead over Republicans. Democrats had the largest midterms margin of victory in history, surpassing the previous record of 8.7 million votes in 1974 and flipped 42 seats, and the House to a Democratic majority. The Democrats broke records by raising over $1 billion, much of it from small donors. More Republicans than average withdrew from running for re-election because they don't want to keep dealing with Trump's B.S. Maybe you missed the election because your face is planted firmly between Trump's butt cheeks, but if you think nearly 66 million Americans voted Democrat because "they hate the US, our history, our founders", then you're an idiot. TRUMP -- the classic CHEAT TO WIN AT ALL COSTS, RACIST, CORRUPT, CONNIVING , INTIMIDATING BULLY. THE WHINING VICTIM. Trump refuses to acknowledge any accountability for anything .....EVER. AFTER the ranting (and usual protestations of innocence) the blatant promoting of repetitive lies, fear, anger, violence, intimidation and Democratic slams cause serious division amongst most Americans, as it is meant to do! Of course, there is the tried and true tactic of Trump’s hypocritical habit of projecting onto others what he himself has done (at his rallies, press conferences, on Faux News, and through Trump’s incessant tweeting). The Cult45 believes him. This is a strategy of normalizing and conditioning the population straight out of the Dictator’s Playbook. Trump will then try to act in a way that makes him look innocent (even heroic), a man the Dems have besmirched and now dare to impeach! THE PERFECT POTUS. Yes, Trump will act totally uninvolved in an outrageous crime and will scream he is the victim of Democratic smears. Trump :: I saved the day after someone else made a bad decision and I had to fix it, lucky you have me --on and on. Trump ---Always the victim if he cannot wrangle his way into being the champion. Disgusting pattern for Trump but there it is. Anyone who has seen bullies in action has this malevolent idiot pegged. This is frankly all he is and all he’s ever going to be... a dark, evil, empty soul. 🆘. Impeach/Remove 🆘. 2020 is way too late. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

I was so disappointed in my fellow voters (and family members) and feel naive it took me so long to understand that I gave too much of the population more benefit of the doubt than they deserve. When I was in my early 20s, I was told by a professional I trust to know that I expected more from and was harder on myself than others and that I tended to give people specifically and in general way too much credit for intelligence, kindness and goodwill. Trump's election was the single most significant proof of just how accurate that statement was and it broke my heart.

(There ARE highly-educated conservatives, you know.) At age 60 I decided to do that and I began to apply critical thinking that the liberals taught me. The conservatives are not all Donald Trump. I've spent my whole life with like-minded liberals, but with Trump's election, many libs I know suddenly turned totalitarian! Whoa! Liberals have forgotten to use their own critical thinking on the media. Just because liberals agree with the media's attack on Trump, they've thrown out their thinking skills. This was how Germans were won over by Hitler. Our PRESS is like Hitler. Dems don't see this just because they agree with the propaganda. And people like me are leaving the Democratic Party.

@@KD-rs6xx Have you ever thought to consider that Trump, like Hitler has won you over? The press is Constitutionally protected and are then only ones that can stand between tyranny and democracy. All trump has to do is throw the masses scraps. Like how the Roman Caesars did. In order to appeal to the populace. Trump has you figured out. And little by little your rights and freedoms are whittled away. Until one day you wake up to find you live in the western version of Nazi Germany.

Even the Trump presidency couldn't stir political interest for them (and if that wasn't enough they will NEVER worry about politics, unless something specific affects them directly). We can't let this allow hate to overpower us to the point of not talking to one another. If it's causing friction then don't talk about it, if that's at all possible

Just pay attention, and learn, what that man is doing to you and your family, and all other Americans! You are not the only one that has an opinion, there are numerous other Americans that also have opinions! Most of us think that a president should not lie, should help people who are in trouble, should definitely not take away financial help from FEMA to build a wall that has been proven to be of no use and would cost billions of dollars that would come out of your taxes! Who also took money away from your and my healthcare for the same wall! He is also hi jacking money for our roads and bridges.... He is signing bills to destroy the clean water act, the clean air act... I don’t know if you believe in climate change or not, you should care about you and your families health! No it is not a debate! It is honest informative information! I wrote this January 16, 2020 Now we are into an impeachment trial of your hero and I probably think you won’t believe that either! He address issues and ideas, not people, and does so in such a way that seeks to find common ground among many who share similar values even though they may differ on many viewpoints. That shows true leadership and creates room for the consensus and compromises that will allow for legislation and good policy to follow.

“Journalists, not activists” is something Ronan has said, yet this discussion seems activist-related in that they’re clearly targeting (and even mildly mocking) all things Trump. It’s a classic example of a liberal, elite panel explaining to the world how they are more informed, because they are “better educated,” in my opinion. I like Ronan’s work on Weinstein, and respect his journalistic rigor and tenacity, but when he was defending Christine Blasey Ford, I thought, “How can he on the one hand be so resolute in ferreting out the truth when it regards Weinstein and corporate media executives, and so blind regarding Blasey Ford?” I’ll leave it at that. Ronan is a brilliant man, but in my opinion, he’s blinded by his liberal viewpoint when it regards Trump, or anything conservative.

Michele Kett Never heard of them before the Carter era. Reagan welcomed them in to his campaign and then constituency and they played well his phony morality. The '80s saw rise to televangelists and them being welcomed into the White House of a hateful, bigoted Ronald Reagan. They counseled Reagan on important issues of the day. Particularly that Aids was God's visitation on homosexuals. That gave Reagan cover to block FDA research and approval of Aids meds, and that caused the Aids pandemic. That's when and where I saw their political influence really take rise in the US. Their drive is they will genuinely vote against their own economic self interests in favor of social issues, particularly gay rights and abortion. Having lost on gay rights, they placed all their eggs in Donald Trump's basket expecting the Supreme Court appointments that have met their satisfaction. Thy genuinely expect the court to overturn Roe v Wade, in spite of polling showing 80% of the country wants legal abortion and 50 years of settled law. The Us has never really had separation of church and state and they used that to their advantage, as well. Many in this country cow to someone with word "Reverend" before his name. It's of course more complicated, but that's basically how I see it.

I do think that a broader education in terms of the world has the effect of opening minds as does travel to other countries and cultures. That does not preclude those who travel to practice the same habits as they would in their own homes. Sadly, they also give their countries a bad name.

Churches here operate tax free and are not supposed to discuss politics or promote a candidate or party. james davis they don’t pay tax here either, which I think is ridiculous. The Catholic Church ruled the western world for centuries, destroying opposition where it arose. I’m a Kiwi and have lived in Australia since marrying an Aussie. Australia follows American ideas and religious dogmas are used by politicians in their decision making in a way that does not happen in New Zealand. The problem of sexual abuse of children in Australia has been huge, with the probability that trial and sentencing of Cardinal Pell on assault is being challenged. He ought to have been charged with dereliction of duty for not preventing what he knew was going on as the leader of the Church at the time. Organised religion is about money and I include Scientology which is Ron Hubbard’s best joke ever.

When it was announced that he had won the Presidency, I thought to myself and with a certain amount of fear, "OH MY GOD! They've just elected Satan!" What I was expecting didn't happen and thought that the majority, seeing what a childish oaf he presented himself to be prior to the election, wouldn't let him happen to this country. Truth is that he didn't win the Majority vote, and that gives me continuing hope for the country, but because of other things in place (Electorial College, Russia...) here we are... a racist-sexist-elitist-bully is running the USA. The very things that we hoped were dying out has stopped peaking through the cracks and erupted out of the closet.

I agree previous administrations made poor strategic mistakes however I never thought they were intentionally trying to destroy the global governance system. *VERY IMPORTANT POINT (NEWS vs OP/ED PROGRAMMING)...* It seems the average voter in the U.S. cannot tell the difference between "real" hard news versus Op/Ed "opinion" programs. The international cable news networks intertwine these two very different types of presentations. Real news is based on fact finding journalism and it's credibility is everything! Where as opinion programming has no such boundaries. It is simply individual opinions being expressed. HOWEVER... far too much of the general public accepts what these "talking head pundits" say as the gospel truth!!! we end up arguing over opinions! How stupid can things get? This my friends is tragic... ignorance has become rampant! The answer is... News networks should be made to identify there various news vs opinion programs with a crawl at the bottom of the screen, followed by a short disclaimer: "This is an opinion program. We do not claim this content to be based on fact." That would be a start.
