The Spectacular Spider-Man is often regarded as the best Spider Man cartoon. Unfortunately, it was cancelled before it could complete its story; however, we still have two full season to go through. So, this time, we're going through the second season. It's time to review and analyze this superhero cartoon and try to answer the question: Is it as great as we remember?

Yes, I am the kind of adult who can pretty easily enjoy a Saturday morning cartoon... but I liked not only the stuff Lowart didn't, but even some of the stuff that bothered him. I still day this is the best animated Spider-Man series. Just to be clear, I'm simply disagreeing with him, not disparaging him. ;) It was still a good, quality review.

there is a difference about critiquing something and liking something, for example, i watched mandalorian, i can recognize a lot of flaws, specially in the CGI, it is way to easy to see it, and everyone can see that disney was testing the waters in the first season, the budget didn't seem extremely good, opposite to clone wars season 7, where it was notorious that the budget was good, and mostly allocated to the siege of mandalor, you can see many flaws, some that seemed very big but where explained in other seasons that only fans would notice, i don't put hardcore fans because it is not in books or comics, is details layed out in series, the helmet thing was strange, since the most extremist about tradition, Death Watch, didn't follow that one, so it came out of nowhere, it was an explanation for movie fans for Boba, but anyone that had seen the animated series would see it as a flaw, and i still would argue that it wasn't intended to be corrected in further seasons, things like those happen a lot, and we obviously don't like those details, but the overall story is good, so i still appreciate it, i will stop adding examples because they add nothing, the point is, even when we can criticize it, saying that something specific was not to our liking, it doesn't mean that we didn't like it as a whole.

I do agree and go beyond what he said on the whole love triangle Peter had going on with Liz and Gwen. Regardless if that’s what the writers meant, it made Peter look like an asshole because at that point he’s dating Liz but constantly bemoaning about Gwen. The group date they all had was absolutely painful to watch and made me view Peter in a very negative way. And it had nothing to do with the fact that he was juggling two different lives, which is far more understandable than this.

Re: Norman getting lucky. His sloppy coverup was the entire point. Spidey blurted out “I know you’re Norman Osborn!” last season, which Gobby played off, but internally he was thinking “SH**!” Thus he had to throw the fight, fake an injury, and run home and try to come up with an alibi. Despite throwing the scent off of himself, the person he framed was still connected to him. This is why he couldn’t show his face after getting his spanking new crime boss position, as if Spider-Man so much as saw a pumpkin, it was “off to the Osborn house”; which is why he focused his efforts on killing Spider-Man rather than distracting him. As far as him not being crazy, he wasted military grade technology on gangbangers for the sole purpose of killing one guy…

Not only because defending a show is not literally the same as defending a person's critique, but also because the latter is coveying the idea that one person's enjoyment of a product and another persons issues with it doesn't have to conflict with each other, while the former is trying to argue that any give critique is not valid.

the thing about osborne is that while, yes, it was convenient he encountered chameleon and harry in ways that could benefit him, he took advantage of the situation, rather than the situation just unfolding in his favor. he was the one who hired chameleon on to keep up the charade, he was the one who framed harry, he was the one who made both the villains and the prison for them. he's a guy who, when presented with an opprotunity, abuses it for his own gain, at the expense of others. he was an active character the whole time.

It's still, to me, the best writing for an animated superhero cartoon ever. No other series pulled off character growth and continuous storylines as well as TSSM. I really wish that it could someday be brought back. Obviously it probably won't happen, but the fact that it would be so comparatively easy for Disney and Sony to work out compared to the way they had to sort out the MCU compromises makes me still wish it could.

i give you the best spiderman animated cartoon, or even maybe best marvel animated cartoon, but not best superhero cartoon, that one goes for young justice, what they did with season 1, specifically the training simulation for failure, and more important, the episode right after that, i have never seen any series that was able to pull something like that, and what they are doing in season 4, i dont remember, ever, that in any series, they have shown superman crying right after he showed a facade for others to not be afraid, they took the strongest character, and they showed the weakness everyone has, with him retelling his mistakes that we saw playing out during past seasons, how those mistakes where overcome, and how it affects him, and he is not even part of the main cast, in the main cast there is exploration of severe depression, how people in that state cut everyone that might help, because they don't want help, they feel they deserve their misery, there is an exploration of how it starts, how it is developed after that, people seem fine, until they aren't, there has been so much in that series, and something that is impressive, they have managed to make a background thing that was in season 1, i think it was also in 2, and it definitely was in season 3, part of the main plot for season 4 in a flawless manner, that kind of cohesive continuity is not there in most animated shows, and much less in superhero shows usually. I will se the previous seasons again to see if the background thing (a bus, like the pizza planet truck in pixar movies) is also in season 2

One detail I do like about the Chameleon reveal is that in his first episode it was shown the Chameleon had a Norman Osborn disguise. Granted I will admit the fact we only see the Chameleon properly after the first Goblin arc does make it feel a little contrived, like all the clues weren't given to us from the beginning. But, it still happens relatively soon after, making me think the writers did have this scape goat planned, especially since most of the Goblin's actions make more sense for Norman than for Harry. In general I like how both Norman and Harry are pretty much given an equal amount of hints. In the comics both characters have been the Green Goblin at different points, so neither character is automatically more likely then the other.

  • @alenasenie6928

    @alenasenie6928

In all versions i can remember it is always Norman first and then Harry taking over, so there was always more reason for it to be Norman, but it would have been so easy to say that he hired the chameleon in the first place, i think the whole breaking harry's leg had to be lucky, but it would have reduced it to one lucky event instead of many, the problem is that a character that does not rely on luck is relying on luck too much, i dont remember, but it also would have been good if they didn't to have him say sorry to someone when the goblin steals the glider, then when Harry points out that Norman doesn't say sorry we would have feel dumb to not see it before, because to us is such a normal thing to do.

@@alenasenie6928 @Alen Asenie I know the Amazing Spider-man 2 has Harry but not Norman as the Goblin. Granted TASM2 came after Spectacular. Regardless one could always infer an artistic liberty that they switched it around a bit. Still having the person be the Goblin from the comic but get it at a different time. I don't think there's anything wrong with this Goblin being a bit of an opportunist observing a situation and taking advantage of it. Though I agree it probably would have been better if Norman just hired the Chameleon in the first place.

We had a kind of spiritual successor in Avengers Earths Mighty's Heroes where the creative team wanted to form a connection with Spectacular by respecting his essence and bringing Josh Keaton back to record his lines as Spider-Man. The bad thing is that Disney actually replaced Josh at the last minute and they brought in Drake Fucking Bell. and they also canceled EMH, damn, Marvel can't let their good series shine

As someone who grew up on 94...its terrible. I love it for nostalgia, but if the guy found this many issues with Spectacular, 94 would be a massacre. And no, Spectacular didn't cram anything...the problem at the end is how slow and patient they were with all their stories, because they thought they had more time, which makes for an anticlimactic sudden ending with many hanging threads. Not their fault, but literally the opposite of cramming anything.

Guys even if you think 94 has aged a bit, it still is probably the second best Spider-Man Cartoon out there. Especially looking at the competition. The 1964 series while it has done a lot for pop culture, has aged even worse than the 90s series. From what I've seen of Ultimate Spider-man it is pretty bad, with all the cutaway humor and completely ruining the tone. I heard it gets better later but that still seems like a pretty big hill to climb up to get the good parts. Pretty much all the good ideas in it can be seen other Spider-man media such as the original Ultimate Spider-man comic or spiderverse, given me little reason to view The Ultimate Spider-man cartoon specifically. I admittedly have not seen 2017's Marvel's Spider-Man, but from what I have heard it is even worse than Ultimate. Considering I am already not the biggest fan of that series,.....yeah.

I kinda like the disconnect between Norman's personality and Goblin's; it's a different take from many of the adaptations I've seen where Osborn is simply a victim his other self. Here it's a pretty fun idea in my opinion that a man like him would turn into a psychotic man flying around, killing people and thirsting for power when he is given the chance to do so. He is just having fun in his façade but when spiderman reveals his identity he doesn't really have a reason to; but yeah sure, maybe he should act a bit crazier before being blown to bits (which I assume was all too rushed due to the show's cancellation) Overall I just really enjoy this version of Norman and Goblin, even if it is a bit questionable that they'd be the same person, it still enhances the idea for me

I heavily disagree with the Norman quoting lines from the play as a negative. To me that just puts a new interesting thing to think about because following that logic, that would mean that Norman also listened to and judged Harry while he was performing which is such a Norman thing to do so it must've stuck with him. I had really hoped that Spectacular Spider-man would continue long enough to see the set-up for Flash joining the military after High School and starting down the path that would lead to him joining S.H.I.E.L.D. and becoming "Agent Venom" one day. Alas, ot was not to be.

Kinda nice there's a Spider-Man series where Gwen Stacey lives through it despite the fact that she only lived because the series was cancelled lol

  • @TheRavenShadowsWolf
    @TheRavenShadowsWolf2 жыл бұрын

I would argue it's perfectly fine for Gwen to have been the damsel in distress. She was out of her league by a long shot when she died. Her ressurection was one of the biggest slaps in the face Marvel's ever made, to the core audience who cares about her as a character and particularly her very definable influence on Peter. She wasn't helpless in their relationship - but these are super powered individuals, her boyfriend was a super powered individual and whatever skill sets she had (as far as I know lisenced pilot was never one of them) weren't going to match up in a combat situation. She works better as a character if you honor who she is. Who she was written to be. Full on morale support. Mary Jane doesn't even always have that. It's fine to argue times have changed, but as of Sins Past; no. You don't get to change the character's backstory. You can't just make Gwen Stacy who you want her to be, because you regret what happened. I do think MJ is a little too much fanservice; Gwen suited Pete best as an actual wife (he is very much like a cop or a soldier in that it IS a calling. Not just a job) and Felicia appeals to the darker side of him, but if those two were EVER given a decent shot regardless of her backstory and his neurotic insecurity they could make a decent go of it. I've got nothing against MJ personally, but One More Day can bite every part of me. So if they're just going to string the audience along in the will they won't they - don't. They had the shot, and MJ LET him throw it away. To save a woman who's realisitcally dead in five years at best anyway. Who had X teen number of ways in high science capability and literal magic to be saved outside of a literal devil's bargain. So go ahead, and try with Silk. Who despite the weirdness of the draw thing, also never really got a fair shot. She can be her own hero in due time, but that doesn't mean she had to break up with Pete. "Strong" does not have to mean "independant" especially when that more reads to the audience, you're not good enough for me. Try honestly, with Spider Gwen since we can't put that back in the box, and she's honestly not decided on Miles yet. Try with Felicia, and have it be the way to show DC how you really do Batman seduces Catwoman into being "tamed." (Not entirely; but enough to keep and that should be good enough for both - it's not that hard. It's just compromise on both ends) Really he's got several paths they could put him down that would be mature enough to show growth as a character past the Peter My Name IS NOT Pan. [it'd be kinda funny to me if he somehow ended up with kids from all four...It'd be Fantastic! Then it'd really be into the spiderverse] I'll also say, Kraven works better as a human character. Not some mutated lion hybrid a la Ninja Turtles. The compelling aspect of him and his arcs is always his primal mindset at jarring odds when faced with Peter's abilities, compared to what his vaunted physical prowess as a Hunter can put out. He's actually a much more interesting villain when he plays the Lex to Pete's Clark. (Like a true hunter would have to, really. Considering what most animals people hunt can do to a human body) * Also, Pete doesn't have problems with the ladies. He has so many he only has problems either choosing, or keeping them. (Not bad for a science geek, really * That's one way to get more girls into STEM : ) )

Because of DC and it's Multiverse shenanigans with Crisis, when ever I watch a DC or Marvel, or any media in general, I consider it it's own world. they are all connected, especially since its the same character, just a different person (Actor), characters may differ, even full one stories can be rewritten, I just go with it. I was prepared to take on Harry as the Goblin, even though in other medias (I'm more of a comic guy, screw you I love Shocker) it's Norman, Just like Ethan Bennett becoming Clayface, I was ready for a Harry Osborne being a Goblin. Then it went to Norman, which kinda made me sad, but hey, maybe in another universe.

Well, i was rewatching and what do you know, in chapter 8, when doc octopus starts, there is small scene that shows that Norman is the green goblin, no theories needed, when the experiment starts is the goblin in costume that uses a safety key to start the experiment, when Norman arrives the key is not in the machine, so, the goblin took it, since no one can use it to get to the doctor, then Norman uses the key to release the safety mechanism allowing the door to be open, that episode puts heavy hints to Harry, but it clearly shows that is Norman, because, if it wasn't an unique key then other scientists would have one, he also does this immediately, and, more important, why use the costume when no one is there? he has access to the recordings, so he can just delete them, or disconnect the system, but it was to have proof for "the big man" that he was not the goblin, that is a blink it and you miss it moment, but there was direct evidence in that episode. I will edit to add if i see another interesting thing. Well, the Chameleon was also hinted, not that obvious, but it was not too much of a jump, the comments of the guard "didn't expected to see you BACK tonight, and trough the front door no less", so, it was at a time he usually is not there, and by an entrance he rarely, if ever, uses, that combined with moving files to a removable drive it was espionage, and the only one to do it in that manner is the chameleon, as i said, hinted, but not in a definitive manner.

I think it's one of the best Spiderman material out there I've consumed, probably not beating Spiderverse tho but maybe a strong second. Feels incredibly genuine and what Spiderman should be about. I haven't read any of the comics, so I have no bias on what's "comic accurate". And I'm incredibly sad about how it probably never get a chance to be finished properly. Also, I think the last episode is really rushed tbh, probably because of that.

As a massive comic fan I'm just going to tell you right now that comic accuracy is massively overrated. The comics have had their fair share of bad writers over time, and a lot of the comics aren't really even worth adapting, or are just overly convoluted. I say this as someone that loves the comics, but every new adaptation has the opportunity to do better than the comics that inspired it did, and for that reason comic accuracy isn't all that important.

I actually kinda like some of the stuff being by pure chance with this goblin because it shows how well the goblin works and acts in the moment and how erratic and unpredictable he usually is like in the comics, what makes the goblin such a terrifying villain is that he doesn't plan, gamble and never has too much to lose and much like Spider-Man before his growth, which greatly hurt and affected others, he reacts more than he does act. The Spider-Man Goblin parallel is rarely brought up but I feel like that's what makes him so good.

I'm gonna agree with many of the other comments here, and say that you've been too harsh with this series. Many of the issues you have just seem like nitpicks that have been blown up to seem like they matter more than they do. But my main problem is how you act like the lengthy fight scenes are a bad thing, *in an ACTION series.* Action can be just as important as writing quality in stories like this, and the fact that it mostly balances out good writing with some of the most awesome spidey action I've ever seen is a feat all on its own, and something very few series can claim to do! The last Venom episode in this season is my favorite episode in the series because it's the one that does this best. It has both compelling writing with a battle between former friends turned bitter enemies, Flash standing up for spiderman, the fact that if his mask is removed it's all over, all that, combined with a well animated and extremely hype battle between Venom and Spiderman! I apologize if this comment comes off as hostile, I just had a lot of issues with how you choose to criticize this series. But each to their own

I feel like if the show got a season three it would have been great. As after the end of the Green Goblin, it would Peter Parker continues to focus on things that are close to him, like his relationship with Gwen Stacy, and failed friendship with Harry Osborn, and his argument with Black Cat for leaving her father, Walter Hardy in prison, and him team up with other heroes to fight off new and old enemies. The invention of the hobgoblin, scorpion, carnage and the return of Green Goblin and what all Normie is been doing all season. And alas, we never got a chance to see any of that which is a shame as I enjoyed the show, the characters and to be honestly every show after this got progressively worse. Ultimate Spider-Man basically had the tonal consistency of a slapstick comedy trying to pretend it was a serialise epic and Marvel Spider-Man is so boring I could barely get past the first five episodes. But what I can tell for others it is a cluster fuck of of terrible ideas and constant corporate mandate to shove relevant Spider-Man characters in regardless of development or the necessary for them to be in it. So yeah I do you think we lost a Cole before became a diamond.

Norman Osborne is a very calculated, meticulous person. You can assume with good reason that he'd always stay in character as the green goblin, even when presumably alone, just because someone might still be listening in. The charade is more like character acting than it's a plothole to me. Besides, he's floating in plain sight above the penitentiary. Even if in the air, it's not as if he's in private. Better to have said those lines and I guess, practiced your Harry, than to be caught out with no alibi.

Completely skipping over Norman breaking his own's son leg really highlighted my issue with your videos. Your critiques are shallow as they explicitly take certain things and make them larger than they are while minimizing more important plot points. The overcritiques mean you skip interesting plot points to point out something stupid like The Chameleon (Man who has legitimately dressed up as Spider-Man) dressing up as Norman is so hard to fathom. At a certain point, the video becomes less of a valid critique and much more of a deep analysis shaded by your subjective desires of how you want the show to be. If you're doing an objective analysis, like we're led to believe, judge objectively.

He didn't skip on Norman breaking Harry's leg. And even if he did, it would be a really minor mistake since he pointed out the main thing-Norman framed his son. And it wasn't the idea that Chameleon dressed up as Osborn that confused him, but the fact that he and Goblin happened to be in the right place in the right time. Before accusing him of skipping on details you should try to be more attentive yourself. It's true that Lowart tends to focus on certain things while missing or ignoring other stuff, but it's unfair to call his critics shallow because of that. Or at least, have a "spiritual continuation" like a time-skip sequel? in the current-ish spider man animated series, last 15 years, this one is the best, because it uses the character as it is supposed to be, spiderman helps, but it affects negatively Peter's life, he is sacrificing his own personal life, in other versions we don't see that, ultimate spiderman had some very good things, for the other versions of spiderman, but the main one gets everything, that is not what he is supposed to be, because spiderman is realistic, to gain lead in one area of your life you usually have to sacrifice another, more free time, less money for example, or bigger risks, sometimes there is a temporary sacrifice, the thing is, one can't have it all, and that is why spiderman is a character that everyone loves, everyone can put themselves in that position. Plus, the unique animation is something else, a aesthetic is extremely important, if you can see a shot without any of the main characters and recognize where is it from, then you have a series that has the unique factor going for it, the sound design is also very good, when you put it all together, this is better because it is good and also irreplaceable, every other series that is a copy paste (the new ben 10, teen titans go, etc) are series that you can see one shot and know it's part of a bundle that has nothing unique about them, it's not worth watching since it is going to be the same with different characters. There is nothing like this series, and there won't be anything like it, that is why people keep this series in their mind, i will love to see a continuation, and seeing that the clone wars got a season 7 and that spiderverse has put people in the mindset of multiple universes for this kind of series we now have the bases to have multiple shows about the same character at the same time, so they can have the series tied to the cinematic universe and still have this one, then they can have specials if they want to and combine them, they should know by now that the viewerbase is big enough for having multiple versions of spiderman, every one with their own story. BTW, i would love one in this style for spiderwen.

My issue with the "cancelation" excuse to stop telling a great story is. . . . it never got a comic series to continue the story. We have huge communities even here on youtube for the series. People of influence like the Ink Tank who have the power to contact the writers of multiple other animated series onto podcasts and things like that. Animators who have gone as far as to animate an intro to what season 3 was going to be. . . and despite all that power and talent that was done all for free and for the sake of artistic value, none of that was put into place to try and get an official comic going. That is what I find the most dissapointing, how us the community just. . . . didn't try hard enough.

Maybe the legality of it extends to writing a comic series. Idk maybe it doesn’t but if Sony and Marvel both aren’t allowed to continue the show legally then maybe the comic would’ve been the perfect way to at least do a S3 ending

Greg Wiseman the showrunner is doing Young Justice right now and he is busy. Even then he said the license is complicated with Sony and Disney when it comes to this show. Plus, he is far more interested in revving Gargoyles.

Between this and young justice, you've covered some of Greg Weisman's most notable works. I would be interested to hear your opinion's on Gargoyles. While I think you'll find it similar to teen titans quality as well as his previously mentioned works being good but not something that can be called great (with great being stuff like Fullmetal and Avatar.) I think it would be an interesting video at least through the lens of covering his earlier work even looking at how his works have evolved since then.

The coincidences I think work in showing the hypocrisy of Norman Osborn. His whole philosophy is that his cutthroat mentality is what made him a self made millionaire. Keep in mind the phrase “self made” because at every turn we see how Norman has been successful off of the work of others. He took credit for the flight suite, abused Ottos intellect to create more villains, took brides from Tombstone and now his success as the green goblin all came from coincidences that all happened to suite him. Nothing about Norman is self made everything was either stolen, handed out to him or just a coincidence and it is why he is a perfect arch-nemesis to Peter. Peter worked hard to get to where he is by the end of season 2 and even then he still didn’t win where as Norman continues to succeed as long as someone suffered.

Basically his whole philosophy of not apologizing is him not taking responsibility. Which is especially highlighted by the reveal he was the Goblin and framed Harry.

As much as i loe this show i have one problem with it. my problem is green goblin.. the reason for this is the fact that he dosnt feel like norman he feels to much like harry.. in one peisode he was even qouting a play harry was in.. and the joking side of goblin seems to far off from norman.. so my whole point is "goblin feels to much like harry and it dosnt fit being norman"

Good analysis, but I do think some of these criticisms do overlook some more obvious explanations. Norman quoting Midsummer isn’t that big of a stretch, given that He would know Harry is in it, and it’s one of the most popular plays to ever have been written. Also, most of the quotes are direct references to what characters are going through. Now, is it super “realistic” for a character to monologue to themselves? No. But it’s also a very common trope in fiction, dating baking to old Billy Shakes himself, and especially comic books. One of those cases that it’s important to remember that not realistic doesn’t equal bad. Theatricality fits with the Goblin. In terms of Gobby’s personality, for this show they definitely ignored early comics version of Norman, where Norman and Gobby were essentially two separate personalities, and took his characterization once he returned from the dead in the 90s. Where Norman was fully aware of everything he was doing, and wasn’t fighting with his Goblin personality. He was just a dick.
