It does not play native dsd unfortunately it converts to pcm

Sounds like a balanced review. I have the nw-a55, good player.

Just picked one of these up to connect to the new Fiio Q3 as an amp using a Fiio L5 cable for WM, and not surprisingly the THX amp on the Q3 sounding much better than the stock amp on the player. Balanced output is the only way as you’re using the 3.5 output for line out.

Has anyone tried the "Studio" effect on the A55? Combining it with the DC Phase Linearizer (and possibly the Vinyl Processor) options achieves a quite warm, more rounded, bigger and bolder sound without sounding too processed. Assuming the headphones used are not already too warm sounding to begin with. It brings it closer to the AKjr warmth.

Lost my NW-A45 a few days ago at a temp job. I'm gutted, I loved that player. Your video made me consider the NW-A55 as a replacement.

Kind of a happy end: I got the NW-A105 now for half price! Also a great piece of equipment: it sounds even better than my beloved but lost NWA-45. I hate the Android interface though! Start up takes way longer and doesn't open up on the player like the NWA-45 did. And battery life is significantly shorter.

Sir, can you tell how effective is this feature called DSEE- HX ( digital sound enhancement engine) in this Walkman. Sony claims to restore details of compressed music format. Does this feature work on say popular 320 kbps Mp3 music format? I mean if I turn on this DSEE- HX feature and listen to 320kbps mp3 music, will it sound better using this feature compared to other popular mp3 players in market which do not upscale the compressed music?

no. no difference at all... just pure marketing. just like vynil processor, clear stereo, phase linearizer... NOT a difference.

I have 3 questions: 1st Question: Can I insert the songs in folders and subfolders on the memory card? 2nd Question: During random play, does the device play between folders, that is, play a song in a folder, then another folder, or play only within the folder? 3rd Question: How would the audio quality be compared to smartphones, connecting it to a stereo receiver via p2 / RCA cable?

1st question yes .. 2nd question is yes but to do that go into all songs then shuffle from there it will play all songs in folders . 3rd the headphone out is not very strong i suggest you use a DAC to pass the audio through, the audio quality is definitely better than a smart phone..

@@Goodgrove I appreciate the answer. I intend to use the Sony NW A55 as an audio source. I have an Onkyo TX-8270 receiver with Klipsch boxes. This receiver has a player that is very bad and limited. Another advantage of Sony is the mobility which will allow me to connect it to other devices. Do you think it would look good? Would you have another suggestion? Thanks!

I have the sony mdr-1am2, and yes they are amazing yet underrated headphone. I was planning on buying the sony nw-a55 to replace my galaxy s8 as my current source. I'm looking to utilize the 4.4mm balanced cable that comes with mdr-1am2, is the sound difference noticeable between balanced and unbalanced cable in sony nw-a55?

Just got one, and it’s great sound and features wise. The only drawback is that it lacks accessories in the US. They have a dock, cable, and string for it but you have to order them from Japan and they are $. I believe the Japanese version has different music sorting in the OS too.

In Bluetooth receiver mode can you skip tracks? I.e. if my phone is connected to the MP3 player and is playing spotify can I skip forward?

To add to this: Some programs, like MediaMonkey, allow you to control how the files will be loaded on the player independent of how they are arranged on your computer.

is it possible to sync playlist with A55 using Musicbee? Im also concerned if it can power my headset (Sennheisser Jubilee HD 58X (150ohm)) enough? Im leaning on sony compared to other players simply because of the nice UI and hardware.

note 9 is not hi res audio player, most smartphone are not hi res audio player except LG V and G series

You could never listen to a lot of Pink Floyd and late Beatles and enjoy the same without gapless .....I'm sure there are hundreds of artists out there ' blending ' tracks together .....

As far as I know, actual gapless between songs is not possible with MP3 files because the gap is part of the format itself. The one way I know of to do gapless in MP3 is to rip the entire album as one file. I did it with Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" and it worked.

How's A55 compared to Hiby R3 in term of Sound Quality? I'm currently don't know what to buy lol

In balanced mode the hiby r3 sounds good so much better I prefer the sound from 3.5mm on the Sony also better UI on the sony

One major feature under rated is the USB DAC function ! And if you mod the A45 or even the A35 with alternative custom firmware you can even get back this feature on those previous model lacking it (and also enabling Bluetooth receiver, etc)

@@sethabeles4971 How can I do this? I made my mind up never to buy MP3 players in the EU again. I couldn't use an award winning Sennheiser headphones with the Sony NW-A45 as the volume was ridiculous. The headphones are old but they work fine with my personal cd, minidisc and cassette players. On the Sony I have to push the volume up to 96 to get a reasonable sound if I'm using a wired connection with my 3 year old bluetooth/wired AKG headphones. I suppose the Sony headphones at £400+ are fine.

Alexander Thomas lmk if this works: Settings -> output settings -> basic settings Tap AVLS Go to volume limit, headphone output, and then uncheck it.

@@sethabeles4971 you can turn off the AVLS but don't remove the volume cap set at the factory because this is a EU regulation. For you remove the limit you need make a software modification with this tool www.rockbox.org/wiki/SonyNWDestTool

What is the zx300?

Can it run bluetooth to a speaker/headphones while it receives bluetooth from a computer/phone? Cheers!

Good review mate. I can't decide between A55 and Fiio M9. The m9's battery life of 10 hours sounds inadequate. On theA55 I passionately hate the proprietary charging pot and to a lesser extent the non-android OS. Anyone to nudge me towards either or any better suggestions less than GBP250?

Thanks.. The Fiio M9 is a great sounding device but the UI is quirky..... It sounds better than the A55 for sure if it's purely for sound and nothing else bothers you get the Fiio... Or if you can stretch a bit more get the Hiby R3 + chord mojo combo that's what I use now, fantastic amp the chord mojo.. Going to put a video up soon of that combo

Sony UK site says 2tb for A30 and A40 predecessors, so I assume the same for this A50 model (if anyone makes a 2tb card yet and you have a lot of cash spare!).

@@nikkonch I've tried a 256 Gb card on the older A-17 model and works fine, too. I'd love to find a 2 Tb card to charge ALL my music on it.

I am using this as transport to my Mojo, this is a very capable device with so many functions. I'm still using it from time to time when mojo is charging but as what they say, once you tried mojo you never go back. Defenitely recommending NW-a55 for entry lever DAP, you will be taken away by the very good audio processing. I'll be getting the remote controller RMT-NWS20 so no need to hold my stack. The battery is very long, I get up to 20hrs playing and when used as transport it lasts 3.5-mojo charges or 35hrs!! no joke!

I have the ak jnr I must say that has a more dynamic sound to it ..A more powerful output as well it definitely sounds better than the Sony A55...but the Sony UI is a joy to use and everything works as it should unlike the akjnr the Bluetooth implementation is atrocious.

I have no music player currently and love music quality, what would you go with A55 or A105 or something else? saying I could A55 for 14,000en or A105 for 30,000en?

I've had mine for a few weeks now and I love it. I purchased the European model (with the volume cap) but hacked it to restore full volume. This is a really nice MP3 player and works well with all the headphones I've tried. Bluetooth performance is excellent. Doesn't feature AAC though so doesn't pair up with the Sony WF1000XM3's anywhere near as well as it does the Sony WH1000XM2/3.

A50 is the series model that's all etc the 16gb version is A55 and 64gb version is A57

It depends the A45 has a BT reciever if that's useful to you then upgrade...if you can download Mr walkman firmware it will make your A35 sound even better.

The ak jnr sounds better to my ears it has more power a better bass ..but the UI is pants that's where the Sony beats it plus it has a great Bluetooth receiver feature.

I do like the blue

A good player but with a few cons like non USB C, low impedance support, no wifi, no streaming services vs others that are cheaper for instance like the Fiio M6 that has all of that and in my opinion a better sound quality. I like the sony though for battery life and software support and stability.

so is it worth to upgrade my NW A45 to 55 ? I don't care about features. What about sound quality?

no difference at all... i have the a105 and a45 and I can hardly tell if there is any sonic difference...

Nice item but very expensive.. It costs more than $400 here in the philippines.. Almost same price as the gpd micro pc and xiaomi black shark.. Sad.

In terms of battery life and UI I would say Sony in terms of sound quality the Fiio m7 is really good and sounds better than the Sony . The Fiio m6 is good as well it matches the Sony but the UI and battery life is pants

You can't stream Spotify on this u only use as a Bluetooth receiver with the Samsung...it indeed sounds great as its is more dynamic sound with a bigger soundstage..

Enable Developer Mode on the S9, then set the Bluetooth audio mode to LDAC. Set the A55 to "Bluetooth Receiver" mode, and pair with the S9. Spotify at the highest quality setting will sound much improved when streamed to the A55 via LDAC (*not* the regular BT audio mode, called SBC)

Buying the A55 now still makes sense especially if you care about battery life, which is reduced to about half when going from A55 to A100. Also the "bluetooth receiver" function is gone, if you happen to find that useful. Weigh those against the addition of USB-C and Wi-Fi.
