it would be so cool to have an episode or two delving solely into deceased rides like back to the future, because it's clear that people loved them and they were probably world class during their lifetimes! maybe a halloween special for FYA? like raising these rides "from the dead" to give them some honor?

This is actually my mum’s favourite ride from our trip over 10 years ago. She asks if it’s still there whenever I talk Theme Parks and her signature moment she always mentions is the baby powder smell with giant Maggie 😂
It’s interesting when Byron brought up how so much of the major IP in Universal parks isn’t actually owned by universal. They have so much iconic IP that just isn’t used? I would take a universal classic movies land over a new Wizarding World expansion any day.

They make bank off of Butter Beer, wands, and cloaks. As much as I love classic Universal movies, it ain't a cash cow like Potter is. Also, while I'd love to be optimistic about first party Universal attractions, we did recently get two terrible first party attractions in Jimmy Fallon and Fast & Furious. I'm not as mad about Villaincon or the DreamWorks land, and I'm definitely looking forward to Epic Universe, but... First party isn't *always* good, and often I prefer third party
It's funny that they went with Krustyland as the setting, when the show had a much more iconic theme park in the show by way of Itchy & Scratchy Land

Ryan struggling to be positive throughout the episode is hilarious
I've never been motion sick before going on this ride (and haven't since), but this ride made me so sick that I had to spend an hour sitting in the shade. Definitely not one I'd ever get on again personally
First time I went on the simpsons ride I was in high school on a field trip, I was on shrooms and knew it was a colorful trippy ride but oh man I was tripping balls. In the outside queue the shade is made up of a lime green material so the light coming through was making our skin look yellow and it clicked that this was meant to make us look yellow like the simpsons. And then I was tripping out more in the inside portion of the queue where there’s so many things going on all around you. Very trippy ride

You know, I actually am a fan of this ride. I feel like this is the biggest victim of people being upset at what it was vs enjoying it for what it actually is. Is it the greatest ride in the world? Absolutely not. But for what it is, it's a fun time and something I rarely if ever visit universal without doing. So even if it doesn't pass the world class test, it's still worth riding in my book

@@jaykay1899 both mission space and simpsons replaced beloved rides. and both also have extremely dated, animation that doesn't hold up well, and are notorious for making riders sick. While I am definitely bitter about losing both horizons and BttF, I still wouldn't think Simpsons/MS are strong rides even if they didn't replace anything. Losing Kongfrontation at USF and ET in Hollywood was even more devastating imo, but the Mummy is a great ride. Jaws was the biggest Universal loss ever imo, and even though I personally would rather have that ride over Diagon Alley, I can't deny what an incredible land it they built. I will give props though, Mission Space is very unique and Simpsons has some great writing.
As a die hard Simpson's fan I feel you should have had me or someone else come on and defend the ride. I grew up in the midwest so I started becoming a theme park head after going to the Simpson's area at USH. It started my love for the parks. I feel the same about Simpsons as you do about Back to the Future. Knowing you're biased it was sad watching it go out here just to die.
Oh man, I spent a year of my life working on this ride! I was working as a concept artist at the studio that did most of the animation for it. the ride had a completely different storyline early on. It centered around mister burns and had you in a plane trying to hunt down homer who had been turned into a giant king-kong-style gorilla by radioactive waste from the power plant. Fox had been too focused on making the simpsons movie at the time to pay attention to what was happening with the ride, but when they finished the film they fired the director of the ride and had us start from scratch again. This was partly because a couple of the voice actors refused to be in the ride, so the antagonist switched from mister burns to krusty. I got to go to one of the early tests of the ride, they had stripped out all but one of the deloreans, which was sad to see. we ran through the ride twice before I had to stop due to motion sickness haha...
Anyone else start the pod on spotify then realize they want to see the ride footage and come over here 😂?
THE ULTIMATE SIMPSON TEST… and of course it failed. 😭🤣
"What a feather in their cap," is the new "Bless your heart."
I would love for you guys to interview people after riding the rides! Ryan mentioned “if we interviewed people” and I think that’s a great idea. If you’re going to ride the ride for content I would love that insight of people answering some world class questions after they’ve rode the ride. Could be a cool way to get more people to the pod as well.
Hoping the Nemesis Reborn tee is a hint for a future podcast! In the meantime, loving your work, easily the best podcast I watch
I was at Universal Studios Florida in its first week of operation to the public. NOTHING worked except for Jaws and ET. We got on Jaws and it was terrifying. ET was a 4 hour wait so we opted out. The Earthquake ride wasn’t working but the pre ride behind the scenes was open. My sister and mom were picked to be scared shoppers on the escalator and I was “Best Boy Grip” who pulled ropes so columns fell. Still can’t believe we got on the OG Jaws!

The only thing i remember about this ride was Don Cheadle was in line behind me.
I didn't watch Simpsons growing up, but from my limited experience I imagine Krustyland would be similar to Action Park.
Seems like this ride is judged on what it used to be and not on the current ride itself, which is disappointing. I feel like this should be judged on its own merit. It will never be judged fairly, especially by non-Simpsons fans.
I'm so sad that Universal Studios Hollywood tore down BTTF for The Simpsons. I love the old seasons of The Simpson's but BTTF is one of my favorite movies and my dad played Doc Brown three separate times when I was a kid.
Idk what happened but this ride was crazily popular when it came out. The theme was fun, wait stayed long for so long, it was crazy, wacky, fun. Now no one wants to claim that they liked it lol this was the backbone as stated for so long but now it’s just overshadowed by better rides.
This ride is the bane of my existence, I’ve never felt sicker so quickly
*reads title* “Lol. LMAO even.”
When I was applying for ride operations, getting put on the Simpsons was my worst fear.
Now I am wondering if you do Star Tours as it is today. How would you approach the Signature Moment test. Would you run through ever combination. You could say every scenerio has a moment. If you do Star Tours I will be there to watch how you tackle that.

I would even venture to say that the fact that it has the randomized scenes is the signature moment. Looking forward to see what combination you'll get.

I'm so thankful that I was alive and experienced Back to the Future and E.T. Just everything early 2000s. Beloved, indeed.
If they haven’t already, Ryan and Byron need to go to Virginia for Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Kings Dominion. Both have some amazing coasters, and BGW is beautifully themed. Love this podcast!
Lemme tell you something - I was waiting for the Simpson Ride for about 45 minutes with a man who thought we were on a date and we were NOT and I was entertained in line, so...LOL
I hate this ride but not being able to identify a signature moment is what made others pass that test. It should have been a pass for this ride too. Simpsons deserves to fail with 5/10 😂
@Nikki-tx6kh

I feel there's a difference between being unable to find a signature moment because all of it is very enjoyable and being unable to find a signature moment because all if it is meh at its best. It's a tricky question sometimes.
@1:22:40 This hit the nail on the head. Comedy might be the least evergreen thing there is, and hardest to connect to. Rather, a ride that hits on a deeper emotion will always connect to some guests. It also is easier to remember how the ride made you feel after, making it nostalgic. I cant think of one "comedy" ride that has stood up.
They should’ve set it in Springfield and instead you visited the simpsons house and had to take a device to save homer from that 3D world he went into in treehouse of horror
I think it's a generational thing really. You feel that a pokemon world or a bikini bottom world would be cool, but I think eventually, in future, there will be adults who wouldn't want that anymore because they had different I.P.'s as kids. I'm not saying the Simpsons stuff was well executed but I can see why it was chosen during that time period. It's also a little funny because no matter how much nostalgia you had for E.T. or Back to the Future, there will be a ton of younger people who will have never seen those movies. Gen Z and alpha have been exposed to very different media, even just in quantity available, then older generations and it is a wild ride talking to them about what they have or have not seen or even care about.

This ride was so underwhelming that I honestly couldn’t remember if I had ever ridden it until I watched this video. These simulation rides just remind me of that period when McDonald’s had those small simulation roller coaster machines, exciting the first time I experienced them but predictable after that first time.

As someone who didn’t have strong feelings about Universal changing the ride, the one reaction I do remember back in 2008 was… “Really? The Simpsons? This feels like it is 10 years too late.” The ride was fun and pre-show was funny. It felt like such a weird IP to put in the park.
Loving these episodes on universal hollywood
Just started episode. Will it past the Simpson's Test?
All of your criticisms are valid (and I fully agree that Back to the Future is the superior ride (I was lucky enough to ride it twice). However, I’m personally much more positive about The Simpsons ride and I think it’s mostly because it was made for someone like me. I am a big Simpsons fan (particularly of seasons 3-9) and I felt that the ride did a very good job showcasing what I love about the show which is the writing and the characters. The signature moment of a Simpsons ride for me should be the jokes and there are a lot of jokes I love on this ride such as Ralph saying “I’m a baby bird,” Homer’s reaction to Marge saying that Bob is trying to kill the kids, the Itchy and Scratchy safety spiel, and pretty much everything with Sideshow Bob who’s one of my many favorite characters of the show. I’m lucky enough that I don’t get sick on the ride so I do enjoy the motion. I’m not gonna defend it as a world class attraction as I do agree that it’s too long and the animation’s looks bad. I’m also sad to not see the Harry Shearer characters like Burns, Flanders, and Smithers. But I do personally have a great time with The Simpsons Ride and it satisfies my love for both the show and theme park attractions. I will take this over Transformers every day.

I really like Simpsons ride, but in my opinion Transformers is better. I think transformers is better because it’s definitely a motion simulator that really moves you around, more intense than most other simulators in the park like minions and the Simpsons. I also think the queue is better since it’s indoors, perfect to wait in during the summer months, and I like the futuristic look of it. I think what’s better about the Simpsons is the overall presentation of it, the ride building definitely sticks out compared to every other ride in the park because of its bright colors and giant Krusty head. But what is really hurting the Simpsons ride is its age. I did the ride last week and it felt like at any moment we were just going to detach from the platform and fall because there were very loud creaking sounds during the start of it. I don’t want to genuinely doubt if I am 100% safe on a ride.

This is my biggest complaint about universal studios. There are too many screen based simulator rides. People like to exalt as a way to crap on Disney. But universal really neglected it’s original FL park. Last time I was there I was bored with a lot of the rides because of all the screen based rides.
I'm the same gen as yall but did grow up with the Simpsons as it's really popular in my country so seeing the land was amazing for me, even the queue for the ride was fun. But OH MY GOD, this ride made me sicker than any other ride I've experienced, and I couldn't even enjoy the ride as I could not watch the screen. I hate it, and look forward to whatever comes after.
I technically rode the BTTF ride in the womb (my parents were on their honeymoon and the day they went to Universal my mom started to show and they had to buy her all new clothes)
This opened up when I lived in soCal. I remember the hype of the ride opening, walking around the Springfield land, and waiting in the queue, but I don't have a single memory left of actually riding the ride. Edit: Maybe I remember walking through Springfield in later visits if it wasn't there at first. Which makes me realize I never rode this a second time.
I think this would pass the exit hall and premature detrackulation tests for me as I had a really good time on this ride my first time on it. The jokes all landed and my friends were cracking up after the ride recalling some of the jokes. So, it’s a 7/10 world class for me. Also, I think the Hollywood version of Springfield is done really well. Before Nintendo, it was my favorite section of the park.

I’ve been watching this podcast since the beginning, and it’s been really funny to see Matt slowly develop actual theme park opinions 😂
To make it even worse, the one in Orlando has a terrible screen. It's very dim and blurry.
I know people hate this ride, but it's genuinely awesome. Perfect pacing, great writing, probably the funniest attraction of all time. Any complaints towards it, are solely based on it being a replacement for back to the future.
Born in 85 here. I grew up in SoCal LOVING the Simpsons. Always remember talking to my friends at school on the episode that had just aired the night before and just laughing. If we ever met kids who didn’t like the show we always thought it was weird haha or there would be kids whose parents wouldn’t allow them to watch it haha. Carried that through high school even! Still raving about the episode aired the night before. Then the seasons got weird and I stopped watching but I’ll always watch the early seasons. So when I first went to universal studios for the first time, this was the ride I was excited for and boy those jokes didn’t disappoint. My husband and I had just started dating then and we just laughed all the way through the ride. One of my most fondest memories.
I saw the name of the episode in Spotify and my first thought was- This is going to be so shady and fun...And it is.
Omg Ryan I love the nemesis reborn t-shirt, my favourite ride here in the UK!!
As a BTTF fanatic I loved this episode! Let the hate flow through you, Ryan!
Lower frame rate would get you more sick. I bought an N64 at launch and then basically couldn’t use it because the games were 20fps on a good day. I’m almost ready to vomit just thinking about that POS. Motion smoothing on a TV looks weird because they have to guess details of anything that is rotating, but mostly because it makes everything move smoothly, even things that are not supposed to move at all smoothly.
i got stuck on ONE RIDE last week in orlando and it was looking at a white imax screen while locked into a clown carriage for 15 minutes
I almost got to ride back to the future, but because of the shaking and hearing people screaming in that last area of the que, I freaked the heck out and had to be carried out...😅
This is the one ride they should have had a guest since they both hate this ride.

I'd love Disney to take a chance on Simpsons and add a Tree House of Terror area to Hollywood Studios. I think a lot of the Fox IPs would work well there as well, including Aliens, Predator, and Planet of The Apes.
Omg of there's a Pokemon Snap ride I would loose my mind. Have you played the New Pokémon Snap Ryan?
Why do they still put ad breaks in when there’s no ads? You can edit around them.
I rode this for the first time last year, with my family. I sat in the back row with my niece and SIL. We are all shorter people (around 5 ft) and couldn’t see anything below the top 1/3 of the screen. The rest of our family had to tell us what happened on the screen when we got off. It was a bad experience that made us feel motion-sick and bruised our arms.

Next I would love a review on the Mario Ride at universal studios Hollywood
Byron is salty in this episode and I am here for it.
This ride always ruins my back almost as much as the Matterhorn. But I do remember having my head bounce off the side door on Back to the Future as a kid when I was sitting on one of the edge seats. Didn’t hurt as it’s flexible plastic, but it surprised me. Same thing happened on Star Tours when I sat on a top corner seat. It’s a ride I only go on if I have an express pass, as I’m not waiting any longer than 10-15 minutes without it. I like the Simpsons but not enough to go every trip. And definitely agree about Tree House of Horror. They’re the only episodes I love watching every year as anything goes in them. I love that they’re not canon, but are just pure ridiculousness. Would have loved to see a ride that can do that if they were gonna go with a “Fantasyland Dark Ride” style ride. Just pure cheese while throwing light horror at us.
What's that t-shirt Ryan? I hope you review Nemesis Reborn. Love Alton towers rollercoasters! The Simpsons is rubbish compared to Back to the Future. Saying that I loved stitches great escape over alien encounter 😂 so my taste can be a bit weird. Xx
I agree that it is the generation above us that loved the Simpsons. My brother was 16 yrs older then me and he loved the Simpsons.

I have been a Simpson fan since childhood, I love the show -watch every THOH during spooky season. I found it super fun to walk through the land and go to places like Krusty burger. I think this is an unpopular opinion (and it’s off topic), but I really enjoy Star Tours. I think it’s so fun that it’s different everytime.
I work at universal Hollywood and there are barley any teens that work at the park.
It's interesting bc even though BTTF is my favorite movie, I grew up on Simpsons so this was the IP that I had the most connection to when visiting the park. I did not hate the ride, even as the biggest screen hater. Also should be said that I am coming from the perspective of someone who does not ride coasters so you can clown on me for that I guess. With not many rides to begin with, it's not great, but its a fun little side quest.
This entire land needs to go immediately. Altho that dream works land turned out so bad I don’t have much hope for studios these days 😂
