Went on this at Universal Hollywood - ride broke down multiple times. Afterwards, saw a kid crying - assumed they were having a tantrum. Nope. They were on the ride when it broke down facing the GIANT SPIDERS. Who needs souvenirs when you can take home a brand new phobia?

On the one hand, I feel sorry for that particular kid. On the other hand, I feel like avoiding this kind of thing is why we're getting a "new" Disney thrill ride based on Tabasco sauce with no apparent villain, threat or peril in the story.

One or two years after Wizarding World opened in Orlando, our family went on a trip to the US which included Florida, and me and my sister begged to stop by Universal so we could go to Islands of Adventure. We were big fans of Potter, including my mom. Dad has zero interest in any of it, and theme parks in general, but agreed to take us. When we first entered Hogsmeade, even he couldn't stop himself from gasping at the level of scale and detail, which really shows how well they absolutely nailed it.

The dementor’s kiss effect was definitely a thing in the Orlando version. I wanna say the last time I experienced it working properly was in the mid-2010s. There’s a bright flash during the spiders scene when they take your picture. Also, around the time the ride first opened, you could definitely see way more dementors and their hands would reach out really close to try and grab you. Edit: Want to also add that the floo powder scene at the beginning originally was an animation of traveling through a brick fireplace chimney rather than the weird green light.

Can I also say how much I really appreciate how the guys really hear out their guests? Ryan doesn't back down on his opinions about screens etc immediately, but they also never rag on guests or remain rigid about what's 'good and bad'. The experience of an attraction like this is multifaceted- there's tech components, but also theming and emotion, and I think they strike a good balance of understanding that and are eager to look at these works from all angles.

1:12:20 The screen looks like it has dimension because the scene follows the perceived eyeline of the riders. It was filmed using motion controlled rigs that the actors react to. As the ride car moves through the physical space of the set, the film 'distorts' to cause what our eyes/minds perceive as a parallax effect. You can notice this same effect used (to a lesser degree) by the mosasaur on Jurassic World. It's not as picture perfect there because the rafts move at a random interval. Whereas here, the ride vehicle is moving at the precise speed and motion that the film was captured. Next time you go on look back and you'll see the film reset for the next ride vehicle. The whole scene/projection will look turned away from you.

I am not typically motion sick on rides, mostly just when playing video games. But this one is special. I have ridden it twice in my life- the first time I was a teen, and I was nauseous for maybe 3 hours after. But then the second time was a year or two ago and in the years in between I got a lap band surgery. I discovered that something about that (or I suppose it could’ve been life in general) turned already awful nausea into a life ruining, day ending nightmare. I rode it at like 10am on my Universal day and spent literally the rest of the day dry heaving and nausea belching. I think more than the screens (or in combination with but not in a 50/50 split), the arm thing they seat you in is the problem. It’s essentially swinging and shaking you around like Andy does with the toys at the beginning of Toy Story and I think it shakes me up like a can of soda 😂

@@endless_del I loved it! I used to not like wildcat as much because it was jerky (typical for a wooden coaster, but as I grew up the roughness became less and less enjoyable) and I think they did a great job of smoothing out the ride without compromising what made it fun originally. This makes me wonder if disabled park goers with accommodations get to experience the castle. Disabled riders can wait in separate areas with adequate physical and sensory accommodations, but in this case, does that mean they don’t get to see the castle? I mean, accommodations over no accommodations any day, but that would kinda suck if you have to miss such a cool part of the experience.

Idc what the final score is, I love this ride lol. I went to Universal Hollywood for the first time for my 13th birthday in 2017, and it's important to mention I was a HUGE HP fan at the time. So naturally going on a ride based on one of my fav franchises was exciting enough, but I had truly never experienced anything like it before. You couldn't tell me I didn't just go on the best ride of my life, and I honestly think it's still one of the coolest ride experiences I've had. Yeah there are screens (which I don't really have a problem with tbh cause the ride vehicles are those crazy 360 things), but I feel like there's a good balance between those and the massive set pieces like the Whomping Willow and the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets. My mom and I got express passes for the day and we rode it 4 times cause we loved it so much (it only broke down at the very end of our final ride, so I got really lucky)

It was the first time going to America for our 12 year old kid, we had waited years to be sure she would be tall enough to go on rides and also make sure she knew enough English to be able to understand everything. We spent 5 days at Universal and 0 at Disney. As she told us Disney had nothing she felt she related to or had any big investment in. I played Quidditch in high school, and yes, we did have brooms between our legs. It was basically a cross between dodgeball and soccer? Also there was a snitch in the form of someone from the cross country team that you had to try to tag if you were the seeker. 😂

I went on this ride in 2015 and barely remember anything because I closed my eyes for maybe 70% of it 😆. I love rollercoasters, but screen rides can give me motion sickness, and I don't like jump scares. My dad really enjoyed it though lol

I remember seeing Dementors Kiss fog projection work in Orlando back in 2018 I when my wife and I went for the first time. I believe it worked once more when we went the next year in 2019 but since then we have gone back every year and never have seen it work again.

Ahhh I've worked at FJ for three years and it's such a special ride! It's the only ride in the world like it, except the copies of itself. At least in Orlando we are the only attractions team that has to be trained how to clean up vomit, because it happens so often. (a custodian TM or higher up TM cleans everywhere else). The queue is such a draw for the ride so much so that when the ride is experiencing an extended down time we open the queue for guests to walk through! It's the highest capacity ride in the park, only challenged by velocicoaster. On a slow day earlier this week for the 6 hours I was at work over 14,000 guests while most other attractions were seeing about 8,000. It is a people eater for sure.

I hated this ride, felt sick the whole time. It ended up breaking down like 2-3 times and then the screens stopped working (turned off) so we had to close our eyes to prevent getting even more ill. Loved the atmosphere and queue though minus the locker sitch.

Love this ride!! Pretty sure the dementor effect still works at Orlando? I’ve ridden multiple times and do remember seeing my face - it’s not that scary. I do remember waiting for like 3 hours when it first opened though - that line was loooong and the dementors were way scarier back then

  • @MelissaTayylorr

As a Florida kid I actually went to the opening in 2010 and I can confirm the line was massive! It completely circled around the park starting at Lost Continent into Suess land to Marvel Island onwards until you got to the bridge to enter it was actually insane and I’m so thankful my mom waited in the line while me and my sister got to goof off at different rides until it was time. I do remember the dementor effect working the first few years of opening, I’ve seen it a few times right before COVID but not since and never consistently. As a Floridian, I was all too familiar with the theme parks in Orlando (I got annual passes for my bday) that having something new was so thrilling, that being said Epic Universe will completely blow my mind when it opens 😂 In conclusion if y’all have any questions about how opening weeks of either HP lands went I have first hand experience.

The kiss of death effect worked in 2019, cant recall if it was when I was there for HHN 32 in Orlando. It’s pretty simple tech, one dementor has a camera in its mouth, that photo of you is projected quickly after.

Thank you for mentioning this ride is not universal. I was not able to ride this ride due to my bust. (Also why I was excited to hear about the ride I couldn’t ride to know what it would have been like) They were very nice about the situation so that did make me feel better at that moment. But this did discourage me to even try some rides while I was there.

As someone who grew up reading/watching these movies I LOVED this ride. I didn't go on it for the first time until I was I was 19 or 20. The next time I went on them was a couple years later when I was prone to having anxiety attacks and I actually had one on this ride during the dementor scene. I kept having to repeat to myself, "This isn't real. They can't hurt you." But that makes me love the ride more because that means it's so realistic!
