Gobert without the shadow of a doubt. Anyone can do what mitchell does these days, a very very few can be this efficient below the rim. Especially when you see his playoffs, if he trully starts to make spinmoves and be a reliable 3 pointer he'll be in the hall of fame, mitchell won't.

So people weren't grilling Gobert when he was getting bashed into oblivion in the post by Jokic? People weren't bashing Gobert when Denver was hunting for him play after play? When it was shown that Towns and Reid played Jokic far better than he did? Year after year in the playoffs it's shown how easy it is to beat this guy. This has nothing to do with one play with Luka. He plays weak, soft, and he's uncoordinated . His defensive instincts at it's best are just average, and usually is below average. He's not the defender y'all make him out to be. Period.

@myleekb I'm not an NBA fan, so idk what you're talking about. The NBA is not legitimate competition much of the team, with many of the games predetermined as to their outcome off the court. What you're interpreting as me being an NBA fan is actually just me pointing out fallacious reasoning of casuals who don't understand the SPORT of basketball. For example, you're claiming Gobert got grilled by Jokic in the post? Is this a joke? MN took out Denver, the defending champs. And the way that they did this was by putting an oversized PF (KAT) who played center for many years on Jokic near the perimeter but then they had Gobert roaming behind him so that Jokic essentially had to beat two centers to get to his spot near the basket where he's most effective People who don't understand basketball, particular defensive schemes, interpreted this as KAT playing better defense on Jokic than Gobert. Which is just flat out ignorant. KAT only APPEARED TO play good defense on Jokic because he had Gobert roaming behind him protecting the rim. Same for Naz Reid. If you put either KAT or Naz in a 1 on 1 scenario against Jokic. Without Gobert roaming behind them at the rim, they'd get beat almost every single time. Try looking at Gobert's advanced defensive stats in the playoffs so far, including the Denver series. It's elite across the board. People who think otherwise are ALWAYS engaging in fallacious reasoning. Every time. Usually cherry picking 1 play.

Noone cared if Rodman made points, or Mutombo... hell Ben Wallace was 7th in MVP voting in his prime averaging 9.5 PPG on 42%/12.5%/49% shooting splits! Wallace never averaged over 10 PPG in his entire career in the 1st place, Rodman did it once... in his 2nd NBA season! Mutombo, to his advantage, at least averaged 10+ PPG his entire prime. But so does Gobert... And can anyone imagine Mutombo trying to defend MJ in 1on1 situations on the perimeter? Or Wallace defending Kobe? Exactly... The hate has nothing to do with him as a player. It has to do with jealousy. He is the 13th higest payed player in the league right now. 13th... earning basically twice as much as Green, one of his most outspoken critics. In the last year of his current contract he will also earn 20 Mio more then Shaq ever did. Did anyone notice that all the hate actually really started AFTER he signed is Max extension in Dec of 2020? Yeah, the Covid thing wasnt good, but he wasnt the most hated player in the league at that point... but as soon as he signed that 200+ Mio contract... Petty, jealous, small minded men with big egos! Those are the ones hating on Gobert. Btw, I am a Mavs fan... a Mavs fan from Germany on top of that! So I dont really like this guy, or anything french whatsoever in the 1st place. Its in my DNA! I cheered every time Luka puts him on skates, or Lively/Gafford dunked on his head! But I am fair enough to recognize that he is clearly the best defender in the NBA for nearly a decade. And I respect that as well! Thats what men do!

Those 3 that you listed have solid iq and prediction, can guard multiple positions and are athletic. No DPOY before Rudy were under the basket merchants. I've been saying it to my friends for a long time. Gorbert does not add anything another 7 footer bench player could not do. He gets out muscled by lighter guys for rebounds, if the wolves perimeter defense collapses, he becomes a cone, he doesn't take charge to guard the ball when it enters the paint, he is reliant on others to pick up the coverage so he can play help defense. He looks good when he is on help duty. On an island 1 v 1 against another centre, he's cooked.

No one wants Gobert AT THAT PRICE. That’s really the big thing. He has another 90/M left on the 2 remaining years on his contract and after that SHOULD be re-signed more in the 10-20/M range. He is far more valuable when he’s playing in high leverage situations later in games where he’s not asked to be a perimeter defender. If KAT leaves this year for better, lower priced defenders then Rudy can just be a defensive center and not a 3-4th option. He should be strictly cleanup. Bring in two great two way players for Townes and run it back next year. Naz replaces KAT in the starting lineup and now you have far better defensive flexibility in the playoffs. KAT for someone LIKE OG would be ideal.

If a person predominantly plays with starters and they have a huge impact (as Rudy showed), ignoring it seems obtuse. However, the value decreases with role players and people with few minutes. I'll put it this way, if I am in an NBA game and every game my minutes show the opponent scored 40 more points than when I am out, it won't look great for my agent. Conversely, regardless of stats, if I am winning and my impact shows we go plus 40 during my 40 minutes, I'm earning my keep. It doesn't show the full picture, but it's complimentary. @myleekb He was elite then too. The reason why it was so effective to put KAT on Jokic is because Gobert was doing rim protection. Gobert's impact is strongest that way when he's a help defender at the rim, and the rest of the team funnels the ball handler into Gobert. That's what they were doing.

  • @lightbeforethetunnel

@myleekb It's most effective for MN to put an oversized PF (who played center for years) on Jokic up front, but then have Gobert there at the rim too. It basically makes it so Jokic has to beat TWO centers to get shots off near the rim, where he's most effective. Gobert is by far the superior defender to KAT when used this way, although KAT is probably better at perimeter D (which is where he would guard Jokic and then funnel him into Gobert near the rim)
