Is the Philippines Really SAFE for Foreigners?

Safety is a top concern for many travelers visiting the Philippines. In this video, I interviewed locals and foreigners to get their thoughts on the current state of travel safety in the country, including whether it's safe to visit slums and other areas. And whether it's safe in the Philippines for a woman. They also offer advice and tips for tourists to help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
By gathering the views of both locals and foreigners, I aim to provide a balanced and nuanced view on the safety of the Philippines as a travel destination. However, it's important to note that individual experiences and opinions may vary, and the answers provided may not reflect a perfect view on the topic. Nonetheless, the interviews offer valuable insights and advice for tourists to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

True! Every KZread content creator who visited the Philippines always use the “Slums” for content like as if most Filipinos live in slums. Most provinces doesn’t even have informal settlers compared to Manila 😂

Dont go to slum areas as if youre the boss, the king or the prince thats very insulting to their life style. Dont be arrogant in slum areas, be friendly and dont look at them as if theyre dirty people. People in slum areas like Tondo are clean people and clean community. Only the houses are not not nice to look at. Slums here are even better than those homeless in the States. Just saying. Be kind, be respectful, dont act arrogant and not be rude in slum as if youre somebody. Ask someone with you in visiting slum.

Very good points from your speakers. I'm a British-Filipino dual citizen living here; moved here in 2022 for family reasons. Been back and forth here since childhood and speak Filipino (which opens me up to understanding the local media and news and social issues here), and I'm also affected by a lot of the in-country problems here (i.e. healthcare issues, bureacracy, lack of support from government for anything), but I was born and raised in the UK, and lived in Japan for several years too, I've travelled around the PH, so I've been able to compare and contrast honestly and am still socially considered as a 'foreigner' despite my dual status. Before anything else, we'd need to remember that there are ongoing violent conflicts happening here. The first one is the conflict with the NPA (the armed wing of the Communist party of the Philippines) who have operatives in the mountainous provinces just outside of Metro Manila and rural areas up and down the country. They do not target foreigners usually, their main beef is with the government, army and police - but you don't want to be caught up in any cross-fire. The most dangerous threats to foreigners here are the Islamist/jihadist groups allied with IS, namely Abu Sayyaf, Jemaah Islamiyah (which is an Indonesian terrorist group active in the south), and the BIFF (Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters) -- all operative in the deep south of the country. Abu Sayyaf especially have kidnapped and beheaded foreign tourists and expats, as well as local Filipinos (both slaughtering Muslim, Christian and Filipinos from other religious backgrounds) so please please please take those warnings seriously - Don't go to Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, Jolo, Sibutu, Maguindanao or Lanao del Sur provinces without a guide and if need be, armed guards. Outside of that, there are tons of safer places here, the caveat being you will always need to stay on the beaten path. Do NOT go to places that are out there in the sticks without a safe route back, or accommodation in rural areas without enough security (locks, cameras, guards). If you stay outside of the gentrified or well-known tourist and expat areas, don't venture out at night without your own rented car/scooter. Please do NOT walk around late at night in most places here, if in Metro Manila Cebu or Davao, just take a Grab (which you can download on your mobile phone upon arrival here - its basically Uber for the Philippines). The only places safe enough to walk around at night for foreigners are the affluent central areas where you'd find expats (BGC, Makati CBD, Ortigas, Araneta City, MOA, Bay City, Eastwood, Alabang, Cebu IT Park), your resort grounds, or places where a lot of tourists are present at all hours, such as white beach in Boracay and the main center around D'Mall, the main streets of El Nido town etc. Outside of those areas, you'd be pushing it and that's the stark truth. In the slum areas, known as "squatters" in local PH English, you would need to be extra careful. It'd just be like a trip to the worst hoods in the US, banlieues in France, or the worst council estates in the UK- Exactly the same connotations, nuances, and exactly the same social problems plague those areas too - albeit much more pronounced here and in your face. Personally I don't see the logic of someone wanting to travel thousands of miles on expensive plane tickets to come here and then go to the worst places that this otherwise stunningly beautiful country has to offer. If tourists to London won't want to go to poorer and crime-ridden places like Peckham, Haringey or Walthamstow, then you'd need to ask yourself why you want to do that here? Poverty is poverty, its not exclusive to the Philippines. Unless you're a social worker in poverty-stricken places in your own country, I'd advise against going to the poorest places here to play 'saviour', because you'd end with Filipinos losing their respect for you or thinking you were somewhat strange. If your reason to visit those places is 'poverty porn' or 'for the thrill' or even 'helping the less fortunate', it'd probably be way easier to visit your local hoods, estates, projects/commissions, banlieue, favelas, or poverty-stricken areas at home instead. Cultural advice for your safety as a foreigner/tourist: Never return any unfriendly stares or make any comments on any rude treatment. Despite what the media says, there will be some negative experiences; like with everywhere. But those few who do give unfriendly stares or say rude things to you as a foreigner are the unhinged/mentally unstable types. The vast majoirty of people here are friendly or at least indifferent to your presence. Smile often in public, even if you don't feel like it -- smiling as a point of positive communication is a big thing here. Call everyone you meet as sir/ma'am or use "po" at the end of sentences or questions (the Tagalog honorific term analogous to 'krap/ka' in Thai). Please dress DOWN wherever you go. Don't wear stylish or branded clothes unless you're been invited to specific events in affluent areas. Most people here go around with plain colour tshirts, basketball shorts or knee length shorts, with cheap flip flops or sandals. Watches, rings, earrings, gopros, chains, trinkets, drones, etc should be safely stored away and not visible when walking around, or be put safely behind lock and key in your accommodation. If you wear glasses, make sure you bring your cheaper pair for your vacation here. Very important for your safety: Please do NOT voice your opinions around social problems, religion, customs, economy or the government - it can be potentially dangerous to do that. If anyone asks you what you think of the Philippines, just reply with positives. Do what locals do - keep all and any the negative observations to yourself and those your trust. Filipinos are acutely aware of the social problems plaguing this country, and everyone's trying to deal with things as best they can. Having a tourist remind them of the bad points in the country can be a huge downer for locals or warrant a 'well, if you don't like it, go back to your country!' kind of defensive answer. And lastly- do your research on where to stay. This country can be unforgiving to those who don't learn the no-go zones before coming. If for example, you want to stay in Metro Manila for a few days- do NOT stay in the Old City of Manila (i.e. Malate, Tondo, Binondo, Paco areas) ; unless you're used to the rougher areas of Mumbai, Nairobi, Lagos or Mexico City. That should tell you all you need to know about the vibe there. Instead, book your accomm and spend your time in the main parts of the metro for a good experience, and these areas are BGC, Makati, and the Mall of Asia area (Bay City). The same goes for Cebu City - Please avoid staying near Pasil or the older parts of the city (i.e. Colon street), stay in Cebu IT Park.

Hi, i think in this content, it depends in what place or area a person is living or roaming by but in general, the Philippines is relatively safe though it has some problems in terms of poverty and crime just like other developing countries. Overall, i think all foreign tourist and expats should be careful and vigilant in strolling around the Philippines since danger sometimes can be inevitable especially in risky and isolated areas. It's a matter of vigilance and carefulness in living and roaming around the environment😊😊😊

visiting poor neighborhoods is always risky(city slums). That is the same for any other countries. Just dont be waving your golden chains and be sane normal person, people are going to be nice and friendly. Its a different story when it comes to the provinces u can rest easy nothing will happen to you.

Great content Rob. Very interesting topic. I could say that the People around Manila area are just very cautious. When I move from province to Manila the people around me keeps on telling me to be careful. Don’t show valuable items in public and always be alert. But I haven’t encountered any situation where I feel unsafe after living here in 11 years. Pick pockets might happen if show off your valuable belongings as worst possible that can happen. But in areas such as provinces, there is a very low crime rate almost nothing compare to main city. So I would say if Tourist are very concern about safety, they may consider provinces. Keep your great contents coming! ❤

Whether Filipino or foreigner, one should always be cautious of his surroundings. In general, Filipinos are good but there would always be people who are just looking for the right opportunity to do a crime. Do not leave your bag unattended, nor place it on your back, lest you may be surprised that your bag has been opened and your valuables are missing. Avoid walking in crowded places. Some people would squeeze you and you may just find out that your wallet has been stolen. The same is true when riding public transport. Some bad people may just rip your bag or steal your phone. Always keep your houses locked. Burglars are everywhere. Do not be too trusting. Sometimes even those you consider friends can't be trusted.

There are good and bad people everywhere. I would take the advice of the security guard. Act local, be lowkey and vigilant don’t do something stupid remember you’re in a foreign land. If you’re planning to go to remote areas. Make sure you’re in groups.

if i happened to visit the philippines, and i look like a local by the way, because i'm pinoy, i certainly wouldn't go to any areas during the daytime where there's only a few people around. and at nighttime i'd only walk in main travel areas where there's lots of people at night. and i would certainly avoid going to any illicit areas, any areas known for gang activity/gang violence/drug use/sexual recreation because of a dangerous altercation that might occur that might get me killed (or tortured, and then killed). around 1983, when my mother was in her 40s, someone just snatched her purse from her and ran off with it when she was walking down the side of the street at night to get to somewhere. i was surprised that happened to her, not only because my mom's a kind filipina lady, but she wasn't even walking in an area that was considered illicit or dangerous in luzon. y'all good people stay safe now.

I’ve lived in different parts of the Philippines including Manila, and now live in New Zealand. Gotta be honest, I feel unsafe here more often just because the nature of crimes here are different. In the Philippines, most of the crimes are poverty related - you know they’re just trying to survive. Here, crimes are more random and can be drug or racism or just for no reason at all. That’s scarier.

"We all know, that people are the same where ever you go. There is good and bad, in every one". said the song. Asking whether a foreigner is safe in The Philippines is no different than asking whether it is safe for a Filipino to visit another country. There are places that you need to be careful of. Ask around. It doesn't matter if you're BIG or buff, when you are confronted with an armed individual willing to get their hands on your stuff it will give you pause. I know you're trying to project the image of the Philippines as a safe place to visit, but there are incidents here where foreigners got into trouble. Some even got kidnapped. Look into your countries advisory. There are foreigners who go to Afghanistan and even visited the taliban and came out safe. Not because a country has a "bad" image, it means it is. Not because a country has a "safe" image, it means it is. Do your work, keep on the safe path, don't draw attention to yourself. Do what you would do in a place where you came from where it is considered unsafe. But most of all, don't give the inclination that you don't trust who you are talking to specially if he is a local by giving off the wrong vibe. Be friendly, but guarded.

I think it is a known fact anywhere in the World there are these kind of criminal minded people but other than that it is safe. For as long as you dont show off your bling bling etc. and initiate trouble when drunk. But then per my observation Foreigners has a special VIP treatment in the heart of the Filipinos. I remember my Boss Grandson a US Teenager visited us in Cavite for Fiesta and he is well love in our Subdivision like everybody knows him and he knows them but Me and Family hardly knew our nearest neighbor😂 he is an instant star that he kept coming back.

How can a country with the kindest and friendliest people on the planet, be regarded as unsafe? Parts of Manila I guess the question is fair, but the country in general is chill as! Haha

The Philippines is generally safe. I just don't understand why a foreigner would visit a slum area when there are many world renowned beautiful places the country has to offer. The same thing for us Asians or Filipinos, when we are visit NYC, what's the point of exploring Haarlem and Bronx hoods if the main attractions are around the midtown and south of Manhattan. Even for us Filipinos, unless you are visiting someone on purpose, we have no business exploring parts of Tondo and other slum area. Just a basic common sense.

0:28 - Small Correction - Jose Rizal never really fought for Independence - but an entitlement to native lands, diplomacy, justice, human rights, and equality between races. Still, he wanted the Philippines to be a province of Spain for a mean time but his novel "Noli Me Tángere" inspired Filipinos to rebel against the Colonist.

anywhere in the world has its own "slam or ghetto" place. Is it safe to the foreigners? of course not! Its not even safe if your local to that country. Tourists should stay on the tourist area. If you plan to live in a foreign country, dont explore yet, learn their culture first and have lots of local friends.

At saka bawal din po talaga mag'camera shoot kahit pinoy or foreigner kapa still you don't have to take a shot of some private establishment and stuff, ang bawal po talaga is yung mga heritage site at private places tulad ng main post at rizal heritage. One of the first places that my then girlfriend and I went when I came to the Philippines in 2018 was Rizal Park. One day, while Emy was at work, I had the crazy idea to walk to the mall from my hotel on Leon Guinto Street. A few catcalls and many sideways looks later, I made it to the mall and got a coffee. On the way back, however, a pickpocket attempted to ply his trade when he came out from behind a Jeepney. Catching peripheral sight of him, I turned around and he ran off. Other than getting a very worried scolding from Emy, I made it ok. youtube.com/@toddandemysadventures2045
