Is the new SG Supreme really worth it?

Is the new SG Supreme really worth it? Some will say yes but I have a couple of issues with this #gibson #guitar and that is weird because I'm usually the biggest SG fanboy that there is!

Another suggestion: You can also get an Epiphone SG Modern Figured if you want something similar and arguably better. Sure the output jack is on the side, but the strap button is not on the horn. Oh, and it’s $599 brand new. I’ve even seen some for $549 brand new. Add a dealer discount, and you’re likely around the $499-ish mark, plus taxes. I agree with everything Dave said. Good assessment. Gibson have lost their minds.

Gotta agree with you there, but I generally don't like flame tops on anything, prefer solid colors.

The MIJ ESP Horizon II cost me $2,000. Now the same thing costs $2,600. I do NOT and NEVER will regret buying it. Need something new and different. Light weight and just easy to play. In other words it is finally time for a new SG. Thousands of years ago when I was a young man my first "real" electric guitar was a shiny Gibson SG standard in ebony. It blew me away. THIS is a masters tool (SG). Now I am all locked up on the buy button as the more I look the more SG's I see I find cool real limited edition small production and it works. Like the young dumb kid that I was when I got that black SG I had no idea how to play it. All I knew for awhile were bass lines. Many years have passed since then. I really picked up on guitar in music class in HS. Been lightly studying theory lately. After watching literally 500 YT uploads of the entire SG line it will absolutely be an SG. FOR NOW-Yes I am aware the big G having high shelf guitars for once. I think the Supreme SG's are 8/10. The amount of features on display in both the Modern Line and Supreme Line is impressively wide. Either the Modern and/or Supremes would take a couple of WEEKS to ACTUALLY learn the Rubiks Cube like user interface. The big G in my opinion are doing more right than wrong right now. They are finally making a LOT of money again I am sure. If you can live with with having a feature most would see as strange then that is actually most people. The black '61 Supreme is very hot guitar to keep getting right.

The ones I've seen have weak flame. Gibson is more interested in wooing the foreign market so they send the best examples to Europe and Japan. A carved top would've been nice.

They need to put these thicker bodies on more of the models. I had the pleasure of borrowing a brand new sg supreme for about a month. Plays great, but that thicker body makes me never want to go back to the slim sg.

Hi! I'm Paolo from Italy. I think you explained your reasons very well, easy to understand also for one like me who is trying to study English (io parlo italiano/je parle francais). I think the sg supreme is great because the maple top adds sustain because adds cm to the body... 24 frets increase the playability... and the geometric fourty inspired decorations are beautiful... but It's not an "Sg"... the maple top made sound the guitar more like a les paul... and it's over priced: because the golden and the mother pearl decorations made costs it about 1500 € more than the modern... but it'is olnly a modern with some golden placks and some mother pearl inlays! Saluti a tutti

Just bought the (possibly) last brand new Pelham blue Gibson SG special in Europe. Paid £1250 for it and wouldn’t swap it for one of these. I know I could have bought the Epiphone version for a third of the price but I like having guitars with my name on them. Next purchase is going to be a TV yellow standard ‘61 - as soon as I can convince the current Mrs G that I really need one

As soon as I saw that strap button on the top horn, it was over for me. That was before I even saw how expensive they are. Yup, I rather have one of the new Standards, and save myself a bunch of money too.

The reason the SG is Gibson's best seller is probably the price. It's at least $1000 cheaper than the Les Paul. Great guitar though. But with Gibsons prices these days, the Guild Polara is looking better and better. Also a GREAT guitar.

I'm a fan of SG's as well, but Gibson left me as a customer with their prices. I get very similar playing experiences from my reverend sensei, Yamaha revstar standard, and I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the guild polara. There is a lot more value out there than Gibson.

Is it me or is the new guitar market just for (art) collectors? Hang it on the wall, put it in the nice hard case under the bed. Drool over the ebony fretboard. Don't get me wrong i luv a nice guitar, but £3400 for an SG ...really? I bought an Epi 59 LP recently on the used market for £500 and frankly imo, it plays & sounds better than my 2008 Gibson LP standard. I won't be spending £1500 on a greeny though. I think the big names have forgotten their core market and will regret it when it is no longer fashionable to collect guitars. Thanks Dave for another enjoyable video.

This guitar NOT a good value at all. As a matter of fact, I think the price is absolutely ridiculous. It's insulting. For Christ sakes, it's a flat piece of wood with a flat top glued on it. Yeah, ebony fretboard and inlays are nice, and the electronics are really good, but to be honest, you can get high-end Asian-made guitars these days that have the same high end electronics and pickups like Seymour Duncan, and with ebony fretboards for $1500.00 (or even a little less) now. So in regards to Gibson's hype about their electronics.....it's no big deal. I own 3 fairly high end Gibsons, but none of them are newer than 2003. I honestly don't think I would buy a brand new Gibson these days. Their pricing is pissing me off. You can get a lot better, with better quality control for the same amount of money these days, whether you buy some smaller American made brand or some higher end Asian made brand. There are obviously a lot of lawers and dentist with more money than they know what to do with out there, so Gibson has their market, but it is no longer your average working musician. So, whatever. There is my rant.

Gibson was never for your "average working musician". That was Fender. Gibson was always a deluxe ideal to gaze up to and dream... that "someday... someday" you might be able to afford one.. Like any other luxury brand... Gucci, Prada ... etc. It's not Nike & Adidas. That's Fender.)

Sg supreme is trash along with the lp supreme. Gibson could have done better by bringing back the fire bird or coming out with a new body shape all together. The gibson modern and supreme models are lacking compared to the standard line. The only reason the sg is gibsons best selling guitar is because they are the most affordable option, not because they are better than a les paul.

Honestly bro, traditionalists like you, who are _traditionalist..._ "well, just because..." → are kinda tiresome. You're the reason Gibson is _contractually obliged _ to never try anything new! 🙆‍♂️ If you want an SG with the strap button on the neck heel... and the jack on the front where it will split and break to the edge - not "may", but _will_ (just give it time) ... - then go & buy: → _literally any ither SG!!!_ Me, I moved the strap button on my Gibson SG Special to the back of the top horn, because... after carpel tunnel surgery, choosing guitars with smooth neck heels became important. ..Hence why I bought the SG, over my heretofore Les Paul. ____________________ This model is unique because the flame maple top has the side effect of: ✅ Making the body thicker (making a side jack possible, not to mention countering neck dive, aswell as adding some snap to the tone sandwich) ✅ Making the bulk of the body a hardwood you can reliably screw into, at the point If these aren't things you are after, then... → buy _any other SG!!_ This is a unique opportunity for Gibson to place the aforementioned hardware in the places they would have originally wanted ..had the thin, soft wood body , not dictated otherwise. It's our one chance at these specs, for those of us who might like them that way. Now, I'm not a fan of flamed maple on SG's either.. Previous FM top SG's I have disliked... especially that "top belly carve" diablo monstrosity... (still...each to their own) But, in this instance, it just works! What can I say... I don't usually chase figured woods. They can be nice... but generally are a bit "wine sniffery" for my punk rock sensibilities... But here... particularly on the wine red one - it just _bangs!_ _________________ It is ok that you don't like it. It is ok that you don't buy one. But it is not ok that you make a song & dance about Gibson having "dropped the ball" and "let you down" and "screwed the pooch", or whatever other pejorative you wanna sling at them from a media platform... all because there is one, single model _you_ didn't entirely love... 🙆‍♂️ Do you see my frustration...?? ( I'm sure you're really a very nice chap! I don't h8 you or anything! I just... strongly object to this type of Gibson "gatekeeping" - for want of a better word... ).
