Is the 2022 911 Porsche Sport Classic the most engaging grand tourer available?
The 2022 Porsche 911 Sport Classic is a combination of cars that aims to be several things. Part celebration of Porsche heritage, part engaging grand tourer, with a bit of exclusivity thrown in. The first 911 Sport Classic was built on the 997 platform and while rare (only 250 were made) it was ultimately a Carrera S with a body kit and a 20 horsepower bump. This one is a bit more special.
This new Sports Classic is a bit more unique. Offered in four colors, it gets the 543HP engine from the Turbo but power only goes to the rear wheels. Even better, it's only offered with a manual transmission. Is it a milder GT2? Is it too close to the already-impressive 911 GTS? Let's find out.

I miss the fact that you can’t spec a ducktail from factory anymore. They look amazing. A GTS manual with a ducktail would be epic.

Porsche could make cars people want to buy like this or GT3 but no you have to buy heaps of other cars first to get an allocation!
Wow another great Porsche that no one can buy!!!!!!!
Sure, I can't afford one. Sure, only special people can afford one AND get an allocation, but I still love that this thing exists. It's smart by Porsche, it's cool for enthusiasts, and it's fun to dream about. Seems a major win to me.

I agree with all that except that we are getting to the point where none of these cars will actually be driven. These cars have become nothing more than commodities for wealthy speculators who want to turn a quick buck-which drives up the price for ALL Porsche models. So for the TRUE enthusiast who actually prefer to DRIVE our cars, we get hosed.

@@NeFjuS Except he’s 100% right, unless it’s a special event most of this “special edition’s” don’t even touch the pavement and are just there so fat old men can quickly buy them, artificially inflate the price than dump them to some collector with more money than they know what to do with before the price finally stabilizes….. That’s exactly what they did with the 2016 911r which where going for around 500-600k a few weeks after launch before dropping, and now Porsche released a better & cheaper non-limited version with the GT3 touring which actually caused the R value to tank a bit!

This porsche is beautiful, and it has the turbo's engine with less bhp, and a manual gearbox. But a 911 gts is half the price, its faster to 60 mph and can be specked it with a manual gearbox has well. I think the gts is the porsche way to go, in my opinion.

The people who buy these aren't doing it because it's good value for money. Unless you count the lack of depreciation. It's cause they want something special that a chosen few will recognize and that other people can't have. These cars have never been a great value compared to what they're based on, but they can become collectibles. I'd argue though if a new Turbo S is over 200k and you can't get a 992 GT2 yet, 270k for this with its low numbers and custom carbon bodywork is a totally fine price.

This car is probably not for anyone who is considering price and obstacle. The internal Porsche customizing branch, will do quite a lot of special wishes for your “normal” Porsche - if you can afford it. I don’t want to know, how much it cost only to paint your “normal GTS” with the paint and how much it would cost to give it the same interior. Plus this would not as much keep the resale value as a directly Porsche specced special edition.

I have got to say - if compared to other “exotics” like Ferrari, Porsche is a steal. Some people might want to attract attention like a parrot (with a Ferrari or Lambo) - but some people like to be just understated - with style. This is what I like with Porsche. In most countries you drive a Ferrari either way only from time to time (otherwise its in the Garage) or you are a pimp (or similar show off). Porsche’s are easy to live with - perfect to drive - and only car nuts understand, what type of special car you are driving (if you have got a special edition or a Turbo or a GT3 etc.).
I remember when the 911 was just basically 3 versions, a regular 911, a turbo, or a targa. You knew what it was as it drove by. Now you have to look for the badges on the rear in hopes of identifying it. there are too many variants. I understand why($$), but I can't keep up anymore.
Great job Zach. Excellent job, and love the commentary while driving through the German countryside!
Dude… great review. 10:23 and maybe a little before are the exact reason I sold my e90 bmw and bought an e46
You hit the nail on the head with the DB11 and Roma comparison, only it's a Porsche so it's even more engaging with the manual gearbox than those cars with automatics, would be even better if they managed to make the 6-speed work with the engine
That narrow road you were on was giving me anxiety. I thought it was a one way att first. Beautiful car. Going to be a garage car for many and just go up in value.

How is the suspension? Any modes - comfort/sport?
When I was in my 20’s, I told myself “one day I’ll own a Porsche 911”. Well, that was when 911’s were under $100k and supercars were $150k. Now 911’s are over $200k and my salary definitely hasn’t kept up with Porsches inflated prices. Looks like I’ll never own a Porsche 911 because there’s no way I’m ever paying this kind of money for a 911.
Is the shifter feel similar between the SC and S? I haven’t heard much commentary on the 7MT in the 992 generation. And is that leather color only available on the SC? It reminds me a lot of the Cinnamon color available on the E46 M3, which I absolutely love.

The color and the houndstooth is available on other cars, though it may require a custom order or Exclusive Manufaktor, neither of which will be cheap. Zack
Which cars have rod-actuated shifters which are better than in this Porsche ?

Very good review. Indeed, a 992 GTS is an amazing machine, so with this car - if you can afford and get one - you are really essentially paying for exclusivity. Is it worth the price jump over a GTS, I wonder.

With a bit of "Exclusive Manufaktur” for the interior, and an aftermarket ducktail for the outside, you could get very close with a GTS for a lot less. And it would probably be unique. If you’re not one of the 1,250 on the list but really want one...
