Is The Lexus RCF Track Edition a Waste of Money? - (Track) One Take

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Lexus RCF costs $67,000, and despite its nearly flawless 5.0L V8 engine, is kind of a stretch at that price, and, frankly, not much of an athlete either. This is the Track Edition, which is designed to remedy some of those issues. It's got ceramic brakes, upgraded wheels and tires, a carbon fiber hood and wing, and a stiffened suspension, saving a total o 176 lbs from the stock car's 3,900 lb heft. It also costs nearly $97,000, four large more than the absolutely stunning, unapologetic, and brilliant LC500. On the track, especially surrounded by other PCOTY entrants, it simply isn't much fun, and certainly isn't $30,000 more fun than the car on which it's based. Basically, it's Lexus's version of the M4 GTS, a car which is not good either. Save your money and get a GS-F or LC500 while Lexus still makes this phenomenal engine.

I drove both extensively on the track as my buddy has a GS-F and I have a RCF with TVD. The GS-F handles much more neutral at the limit, while both on 255 and 275 Pilot Sport 4S and both with TVD in Track Mode. The RC-F tends to under-steer quite a bit while the GS-F is really easy and balanced to throw in corners at the limit. I got the RC-F because I thought it looked better and more aggressive, but did not compare the two at the limit. The RCF is actually a lot heavier than it looks. The curb weight of the GS-F 4034lbs and my RC-F with TVD is 3968. So less than 100 lbs separates these two cars although GS-F seems a lot bigger.

Of course it can be argued that his judgement is subjective and based solely on his driving style, but in general there is an informal consensus on what makes a track car "fun to drive", and it seems like (if you trust Matt Farah, which if you don't why are you here) this one just isn't. This car needs to ditch the electric seats, use titanium exhaust and carbon ceramic discs. Use dry carbon roof, bumpers and trunk lid. That alone will shave 80-100 kg. Ditch the auto and put in 6 speed manual. Put some ITBs on those V8. Use what they learn from LFA to channel the intake roar into cabin. Tune the suspension and dial out that nasty understeer. Make 500 units and charge $110k.

It probably runs slower times than a $35K front wheel drive Civic Type R. We know for sure it runs significantly slower track times than a Camaro SS 1LE or Mustang GT PP2, which cost $50K.

Highly disagree with sentiment on the base RC-F in the description. It's a great car in the 60k range and just about the perfect daily driver. You pay for the quality of manufacturing, parts, etc., and if there ever was a performance vehicle worth buying it's one with a 2UR-GSE. Save the leases for the time bomb M or AMG engines.

100% agreed. I’ve had my RC-F for the last four years and as a daily it has been a joy to own. From cross-country and up and down both coasts, to day-to-day life in NYC, the car hasn’t had a single issue. Not even a rattle. Few cars I’ve ever driven inspire more confidence in their build quality. It isn’t a track toy, but as a fun, fairly fast daily GT it is hard to beat.

I really love my RC350 and still contend it's the right RC to own. They're GT cars, not sports cars. It's a beautiful, comfy car with a nice interior and some power that's reasonably nice to drive, but ultimately it's a Interstate mile slayer for road tripping and commuting.

I have an RCF with the performance pack that I picked up certified for less than 50k. is a BMW (or whatever) a second or two faster around a track? Sure. do I have a naturally aspirated V8 that is balls out fun, still pulling hard at 150 with Toyota reliability and a kickass Sound system. yes I do. Seriously it is the best daily driver ever. GSF is heavier and a 4 door. Lastly, If you must have more power a supercharger kit puts 7-800 HP at you fingertips for less than 10k

Only 50 RCF track editions being made. It’s a collector cars. All the other cars that people are comparing to are mass produced and will drop in value. It also has carbon ceramics brakes, different gearing, carbon fiber everywhere and a lot of there things. If you want an actual track car you buy a ISF take it to RR Racing and have a 630whp monster.

I'm grateful to Lexus for keeping the V8 naturally aspirated engine. The only problem I have with them is that they don't want to put manual transmissions with those V8s and it's more insulting when they don't even have it on a Track Edition of this. I'll be honest I'd get this if I had money and was absolutely fine with automatics but sadly none of those categories work for me.

Watching you try to get that thing rotated and around corners looks like it’s made of lead. Glorious exhaust note but I think Lexus IS confused as to what direction they’re trying to go when it comes to where they stand as a brand amongst its competitors in 2019/2020. I’m a euro car guy but Lexus needs to stick to what they do well and that’s cars like like the GS.

As an RCF, ISF, IS200, IS300 GTE swapped owner, I'd never buy the track edition. For 30k in mods, I can get a SC and the rest of those parts and then have better times for FAR less money. Edit: Even the standard one drives similar to what Matt says. I've noticed an insane amount of understeer when trying to slide it.. Chassis is way to stiff and struggles to grip in the rear. the ISF has way more rear grip even with less tire.

I agree wholeheartedly. On my RCF, i was able to achieve everything i wanted with aftermarket parts, and personalize it to my taste for about 30K on top. The amount of money they're asking for, for the new RCF with this new track edition package, is simply unjustified. Not to mention the dealer markups on top of the asking.
