I have a 1200 sportster and the wife has a 600vlx. Personally I like the "cool" factor to the Harley but reality is the Honda is wayyy superior as for ride quality and reliability. You hit a little bump on the sporty and get kicked out of the seat. The shadow can tank any pothole in front of it. The low center of gravity makes the shadow so nicely balanced too. As soon as the wheels start to roll the bike stays balanced. When it comes to working on the bike no debate, i can tear the Honda down to bare frame and empty split engine cases and rebuild with not a single curse word coming from my mouth. The Harley you can do the most simple thing like replace the clutch cable and want to scream when something like the barrel adjuster snaps and it holds the primary oil in the engine and you sit there shaking your head saying "wtf were you thinking harley." The Honda's are just designed to be more or less kept up with the times, the Harleys are primitive which in its own way gives them a cool factor. So IMO if you need to rely on the bike and need a safer more comfortable ride buy a Honda. If it's just a fun toy and you not only have a more mechanical ability (since you will eventually end up drilling, tapping, cutting, welding something) but also have patience and know how to stay cool when you work on your headache of a toy, a Harley is a cool, nice looking, great sounding, eye catching bike to own. So hope this helps for someone new to motorcycles trying to decide between the two. Like I said I own both and since I love all bikes for what they are I try to never be bias, just honest.

That was just about one of the most helpful and descriptive comments I’ve ever read on comparing bikes so thank u for that haha. I just sold my sport bike and was looking into a shadow 750 bobber. I’ve had some concerns of power and speed but I’m pretty satisfied on my friends HD 48. Do you think the 750 shadow will be unbearably slower than my buddy’s 1200?

Listen brother, I’m 6’ 210 and I absolutely love my Shadow also. My Harley is a constant pain in the ass, always in the shop. The Harley sleeps in a heated shed… My Honda lives in the street. In the winter I warm it up once a month. I just came in from a ride and she won’t stutter! She cranks right over no issues. To get my Harley running I have to dig up the Harley brothers, give them a hand job and maybe it will start. Honda don’t give a F##k it’s like honey badger…

I have the 99 ace 750. Man I love this bike. I've been tempted to trade multiple times but everytime I go test ride something else I just don't see much of a point. I'm always comparing it to my shadow and if I'm doing that why spend more money? She runs amazing, I've been riding her pretty much all year round for 2 years now. She only had 15k miles and now sits at 29k.

Just did a 6 day ride on my 05 shadow 750 Aero from Invermere BC to southern Ontario. Glorious sunny, warm fall weather and colours. Not one drop of rain. Ride of a lifetime. A bit rough on the ass, numbness after 60 km. Perhaps cycling shorts under my jeans and leathers would have been smart. But I could not have asked for more of a bike than my Shadow delivered. Wonderful experience! Lots of nice people along the way, too!

My oldest daughter bought a used Honda Shadow for her first bike. I went with her to look it over and I ended up driving it home for her. ( 60 miles or so) I found it had good power and shifted better than any of the Harley's i ever owned. She rode it for a few months and sold it mostly because she was riding with Harley people and they gave her a bad time about it. She also had a very close call on it where one of the other guys she was with was hit and killed. She sold it and I was happy to see it go down the road. riding in Florida is a carp shoot anyway with all the traffic and bad drivers. My wife and I sold our Bradenton Florida house and moved to no where Alabama. I rode more in the last year here than I rode in Florida in the last ten years.

I call Florida the “Take that!” State. People act like they’re in a burn to get anywhere and if you’re on the road with them they just love to put it to you. I rode down to the keys one year and thought id never go back. Then my son wanted an Impala and I found one in Palm Beach for what he could afford, flew down aand drove it back to Shreveport. Between the pick up point and Georgia I swear I had four close calls with people riding like there was no reason to share the road. Amazing. Never again. I have to recommend the riding in Tennessee and Arkansas.

I’ve owned near every kind of bike old and new, many of my friends have shadows and my dad has rhode Honda’s since I was a kid, mostly old cb’s now goldwings. I’ve worked on all the Honda’s constantly, I have my coworker and my neighbors shadows in my garage now. I have several Harley’s and a victory I ride. My wife has a 07 883r. Never done anything but oil, plugs, brakes and belts, my 06 dyna has 89k miles and I’ve had zero issues. My old evo 100 needed a starter clutch once. I’ve had Vulcans and vstars that were way more dependable then the Honda’s and a few rockets that were not so good, mostly oil leaks a carb issues. Buy what you want but I prefer to ride not push. Ride Solid.

My 2005 Sportster has never leaked or burned oil. It's easy to work on and it always starts first time, every time. I had to replace the brake pads and tires due to all the miles I ride. Love it! Aftermarket accessories can be cheap or expensive and Craigslist is full of used quality parts at low prices. Come to think of it, my bike came from Craigslist, too. I started riding in 1963 and I've never bought a new bike or sold one for less than I paid for it.

I got a '15 Shadow for my first street bike. Chose it for the price and reliability. I have over 10,000 miles on it. It's a good ride, for riding responsibly and staying within the speed limit. I've done many rides of about 100 to 400 miles in a day. Always 45 to 50 mpg. I upgraded to a Maverick seat, heavier wider handlebars and swept-back risers, mini floorboards, highway bars, large LED headlight, and a Memphis Shades windshield, all for more comfortable highway riding. I'm 6'2". The ergonomics aren't perfect for me, but it's good enough for day-long rides. The relatively light weight is easy to handle, like for example if the rear wheel starts to slide out. So I've never dropped it, knock on wood. Drawbacks: the light weight means I feel all uneven road surfaces in my lower back. Braking and maneuverability is reliably adequate, but not great. The tires have inner tubes; so any tire puncture can't simply be temporary plugged, but instead requires the wheel to come off and an inner tube replaced.

Stopped by a friends house on my 2007 Shadow 750 Spirit.. Black. His cousin was there. He just bought a 1200 Sportster at over $13,000.00 OTD and was bitching. His cousin was looking over my bike and looked up and asked " why didn't you buy a Harley " ..... Really.... I mean REALLY ???? Harley imports parts to put bikes together, the plastic for my taillights comes for the U.S.

I've owned both and I bought them both used for about the same price. Maintenance, although different, is just as easy and costs about the same. As far as I'm concerned, ride both and then decide. Apple and orange. The quality is the same. I'm 70 years old and rode my first Honda in 1964. I've owned several metric bikes since then and I also love my Sportster. No, I've never owned a big bike of any kind. Never wanted or needed one. I usually ride by myself and I don't care what anybody else thinks of my ride or my apparel.

I've ridden both and I sold the Harley. My 99 Shadow 750 ACE is an awesome bike and I just feel so good riding it. The Sportster isn't a bad bike, at all ! But for me ... The Honda Shadow just feels special.

@Bunnyshooter 223 Some people prefer to ride a Dependable motorcycle that's more comfortable... there's a reason Harley Sportsters are called boneshakers. Another reason to ride the Honda instead of the Harley in an attempt to keep the myth alive that Harley's hold their value.

Right on the money about Harleys. HD owners are so uptight about comparisons but it's the only way that they can get better and probably the reason why they got better in the early 2000s.

I have my 1983 Honda Shadow putting all new fuel lines on it.The choke lever adjustment built into the hydraulic clutch handle bar assembly got the threads broken during transportation. I took the pull knob choke of a cr85 engine it's identical. They don't make the choke cables any more so I am going to try the local salvage yard to see if they have any of the pull knob chokes. It is VTC 750 6 speed with Jardine header.Stock top speed is 137mph,69 hp.Getting ready to hook the battery up and hope that the stock choke is in run position,if not it sprays gas all over the engine. I have had it for 2.5 years and no problems until the moving guy stepped on the choke lever.,15 minutes and I will see what happens and then back to cleaning it up . Hopefully should be riding in couple more hours.

Nice review! I have a Sportster, my buddy had a Shadow 750. Occasionally on trips we'd swap for a while. Jacob really didn't like riding my bike - he said it was like driving a truck! After riding his Honda, I had to agree. The different design philosophies between the two companies is very apparent. Me personally, I like driving trucks, so I love my Sporty. Having said that, his 750 was a super-nice ride! All the controls worked so smoooothly! But the bike had no "personality," that hard-to-define quality that makes Harley lovers out of us.

Dennis, what would that have proven? His was a 750, mine was an 883. They had different gearing. They were vastly different bikes, other than looks. But honestly, he probably could've taken me in a drag race, I don't know. And you know, there were a lot of things he and I never compared. Maybe it's hard to believe, but some guys are just not competitive with each other.

So I have 5k maybe 6k dollars and I want to buy my 1st bike so the wife and I can go ride..what size and brand would you buy? I still don t like HDs though, but Id buy one if they are better than Honda.

  • @ThatBobGuy850

    @ThatBobGuy850

"Better?" What is "better," Giovanni? If you start off with the premise that you don't like Harleys, then a Harley will never be "better" than anything else. Oh, and nobody can tell you which bike is "better" for you. All bikes are good these days. Honda Shadow 750's are great bikes. In fact, if you're wife is going to be a frequent passenger, I'd probably lean toward the Honda as opposed to a Sportster. Just saying. (But don't overlook the Suzuki Boulevard, either.) Here's some honest commentary on the Sportster, coming from a guy who's on his *third* Sportster: 1. They're really not good bikes if you haul a passenger a lot. They have *tiny* back seats - unless you put a big aftermarket seat on it, and most of them look pretty goofy. Rear suspension travel is not good. Even with good shocks, there's just not a lot of travel back there. You will soon find out why this is important. 2. Depreciation. "Harleys hold their value." That's the biggest bunch of bullshit you'll ever hear. Harley owners *THINK* their bikes hold their value. But if you look on eBay you'll see hundreds of Sportsters. Every one of them is overpriced. It's supply and demand, baby! Every Harley owner thinks you get back 1:1 for every dollar you spend on accessories. Hint: You don't. Maybe you only get ten cents on the dollar for every mod you've done. In fact, a ton of accessories/modifications can actually cause a bike to LOSE value. Maybe I don't want the modifications you made. Now it's going to cost me money to return your bike to stock? That's coming off the purchase price, son. So watch the ads. Find the Sportster (or other bike) you want. Offer the seller a reasonable price (this will probably be *much* lower than what he is asking). When he balks and cries (he will), just say, "I'm offering $X. I'm here with cash when and if you really want to sell it." If that doesn't work, move on to the next bike. Sooner or later you'll find someone who actually wants to sell his Sportster and not sit on it. This tactic works, trust me.
