Is the Fujifilm X-Pro 1 still worth it?

Ғылым және технология

The Fujifilm X-Pro 1 is now over 10 years old and was the first camera in the Fujifilm X Lineup with the X-Trans 1 sensor, how does it hold up? How does it compare to the X-E1? Is it still worth it and is it a good option at 300 dollars/euro?

    12:03 You can override the camera-selected magnification of OVF by moving the viewfinder selector lever and holding it for 2-3 seconds. It will toggle between the two magnifications. This dual magnification feature was removed from X-Pro3, and so you can't use a 18mm lens with OVF any longer☹.

    I bought an X-Pro 1 a few years ago. I already owned newer Fuji bodies, but I got a great deal at $250. The body was in excellent condition and everything works. I mostly use it as a knock-around camera, when I don't want to risk any of my newer bodies. I've taken excellent photos at the beach using the XC-50-230 lens. Thanks for a nice video. I like the photos. Hope your channel is a success.

    Even tho I own several X series, plus the 50r and 100s the camera that is ALWAYS with me is my 10 year old XT1 with the old version of the 27mm 2.8. This combo is amazing. Fits in my pocket or sits in my truck. I love the 40mm viewpoint - which is why I also own the 50mm 3.5 for my GFX series. My XT1 has over 190,000 shutter clicks and still going strong. Other than having to glue the front rubber grip down I've had ZERO issues.

    The X-Pro1 has frame line correction in the OVF. Set the AE-L for back button focus if you haven’t done so already and put the camera to manual focus with the little switch on the front. While using the OVF, pressing back button focus and then half pressing the shutter will display the frame line correction. If you’re close to your subject the frame lines will always be a bit off. Don’t bother with focus leaking it’s rubbish. Invest in a new diopter with better optics that will make the viewfinder crisper. They can be had off eBay for 10-20 quid depending. They’re usually Nikon ones and are 19mm. To get your strength, just go into a chemist and try on some cheap off the counter glasses and find the prescription that works best. I use a +1.5 for example. Improves the viewfinder no end and makes manual focus with vintage lenses a breeze.

  • @kevrosas1

    @kevrosas1

    Жыл бұрын

    Confused by your comment as the OVF doesn’t look through the lens. Only the EVF does - which is probs or what you mean. Even so with the best eyesight it’s near impossible to nail focus without peaking on the low-res little screen.

  • @derrenleepoole

    @derrenleepoole

    Жыл бұрын

    @@kevrosas1 the screen in the EVF, while class leading at the time, is really not very good. Replacing the diopter massively improves user experience and manual focusing and the clarity of the EVF. I never use the peaking as it makes what is already a not great screen even harder to use in my opinion. Manual focusing with vintage lenses or other manual lenses is all about practice. You get used to seeing where the focus point should be, dial in focus quickly and if you need to critically focus, punch in the magnified view. Replacing the diopter is a must in my opinion.

    Another great video. I have the X-Pro1 as well as it's junior brother the X-M1. Both of them share the first generation X-Trans electronics. Since X-M1 is with me longer I've shot a lot with manual focus lenses and did not find any issues with only one (white) color focus peaking. I've taken pictures in Summer or Winter when the colors are far less contrasty and focusing effectiveness is not diminished at all. The X-M1 became my go-to camera instead of the more capable X-T30 (I got originally) for several reasons, one of which was it's compactness. The M1 with it's flippy screen is ideal for shooting from the hip or pavement level and for me the lens was the ideal grip by which I typically carry it. Best of luck.

    I think one of the issues with the OVF feeling off when composing could be partially because of the small sensor, were the sensor larger the edges of it would technically be closer to the viewfinder.

    It seems back dial malfunction is a common issue with this camera. I had the same issue with my X-Pro1, but I more or less fixed it with absolute alcohol. Just apply a couple of drops of absolute alcohol around the back dial and turn the dial back and forth. You can repeat the process several times if It does not solve the issue the first time around. According to my experience, this issue reappears after a while, but the frequency of occurrence gradually decreases over time.

    Own an XPro1. And this is a very good video introduction. But the description of the relationship with manual lenses is a bit misleading. I use optical and manual lenses all the time. You don’t have to shoot zone or blind… just use the back dial button as a zoom focus checker (with focus peaking on). Sure it’s slightly slower. But it works absolutely fine. As you say, don’t choose an XPro1 if you’re worried about autofocus and fast shooting scenes. It’s too clunky for that. I use an XT30 for that kind of thing… the difference is night and day. But I would always choose the XPro1 when using my manual lenses… not the XT30… because the only reason to use the later camera is for speed. With regard to image quality, ergonomic feel, cool-factor… and even low light performance/IQ… the XPro1 is STILL a much more satisfying camera. And yet I definitely use the XT30 more and would grab it first in a pinch. Know what you are getting into before buying. Lovely photos btw!!

  • @futc.photography

    @futc.photography

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the kind words :) I also have the X-T30 and I'm very happy with that camera, it is super fast and very tiny, I love how good the electronic shutter is for discrete shooting, and I especially love the colours it can produce together with film simulations. I will do a full review on my X-T30 in the coming weeks probably. Can you elaborate on zoom focus checking? Does it then bring up the EVF with a cropped preview when you press the button?

  • @Hic_Rhodus

    @Hic_Rhodus

    Жыл бұрын

    @@futc.photography Yes. We seem to share the same experiences with these cameras. For discreet silent (esp one-on-one casual portrait) photos… the XT30 is way way more useful. The XPro1, despite my love for it, nearly always creates anxiety and slight annoyance in the person I’m taking a close photo of… because you have to bring it up to eyeline to take the shot and you have to linger to get it just right. The fold out screen and fast reliable autofocus (and e-shutter) completely changes the shots you can get in those situations with the XT series (and the number of great photos you can take away). As regards the zoom focus function on the XPro1… the rear dial button (even when using the optical vf) functions as an extremely functional close-up zoom-focusing tool that almost instantaneously switches to the evf while using it… and by then back to OVF frame when you half-press the shutter button. You have two options when using it… You simply turn the same rear dial and you can move between a zoom focus area and a super-zoom focus area (which is more precise… but much harder to use when the subject is moving at all!). Works just as good with manual lenses as with autofocus lenses. 👍

    Maybe avoid talking about art if you have zero art history knowledge or art in general. Calling it even modern art, which is a term for art from 19century to till just post WW2 art, but you kinda want to talk about contemporary art, which is also at its end and new term and era is starting atm. Also not being your cup of tea, meaning that again you don't have any reference to understand it and lack of it doesn't mean it is bad. If you ask yourself "What does it mean?" maybe read about it. It is clearly not made for you, as you are not the center of anyone else's world.
