Is the ARB CKMA12 Air Compressor Easy to Install and Do I Like It?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After my Slime air compressor died on the trail, I purchased ARB’s Compact Air Compressor (CKMA 12) and installed it under the hood of my Jeep Wrangler. I also got ARB’s accessory kit that comes with a hose and connectors, ARB’s tire inflator and EVO’s compressor mount that is specific for a Jeep JK.
Join me in my garage and find how hard this ARB on board air compressor was to install and how long it took me using just some basic hand tools.
The compressor inflated one of my 32” tires from 20psi to 40psi in exactly 2 minutes which was very impressive and I am looking forward to quickly filling up my tires during the next trail adventure. ARB makes some of the best air compressors out there.
I am only using this compressor as a tire inflator on my off-road adventures, and will not be using it for air lockers.

From ARB’s website:
Permanently mounted, the range of ARB vehicle mounted compressors are water, dust, heat and shock resistant to withstand the rigours of off road travel. Each kit includes a full wiring harness with relay, multi position mounting bracket and pressure switch. An optional tyre inflation kit is available separately for selected models.
Designed specifically for Air Locker and sealed for moisture and dust resistance, this compact on-board compressor comes with a full wiring loom for simplified installation and plug-in connectivity to Air Locker control solenoids.
Despite being compact in size, the Air Locker Activation System is built from quality components for quiet operation and extra long life and is suitable for running on the 12V accessory supply for most 12V and 24V vehicles due to its low current draw.

    Oh wow, retro TrailRecon! For anyone referencing this - I just installed the same model in my TJ. The included carriage bolts really screwed me, the nuts stripped when tightening and I ended up cutting them off with a grinder. I opened up the harness and removed the wiring meant for locker solenoids - essentially I just ran the single red wire from the pressure switch to my SPOD knockoff - so the pressure switch has no power at all until the SPOD switches on -- and then the pressure switch controls the ARB relay. I hated keeping a loose relay in my setup, but I don't trust winch/compressor level amperage through knockoffs. Installing on the empty ABS tray in a TJ -- just remember the 2 4mm hex screws - loosening allows you to rotate the entire unit and makes installation a breeze under the master cylinder.

    TrailRecon, well produced video. Now that you have had the compressor in for a while, I have some questions. 1. Do you wish you had piped a connection fitting to the front or rear of the JK? Not having to open the hood is a plus. 2. Do you regret hard mounting the compressor. Would you like it free (in a bag)? You would not have to pull your JK close to help out others. 3. How hot is the compressor getting your Brake booster? My compressor gets very hot.

  • @yewang4713

    With the SPOD which has a relay rated at 40amp you should have been able go straight from your SPOD terminal to the power cables on the compressor (it is rated at a max draw of 32amp). Did you use the harness and relay they sent to hook up the pressure switch? From what I have read the pressure switch is used in conjunction with the air lockers and may not be necessary when just using it to fill up tires. I believe it is there to turn off the compressor at the rated psi to protect the lockers. What would be cool is to replace it with a pressure switch rated to the psi for your tires and then it will turn itself off when it reaches that pressure (instead of standing and watching.

    +Jeffery Weber Ya, I read mixed information regarding direct wiring to the SPOD. I figured best to just use the wire loom as is, not a whole lot of extra work. I love the idea about having a pressure switch that shuts off when the tires are full.... that would be awesome!

    thanks for posting this! i've had my ckma12 running my front/rear lockers for about 6 months now and just got around to ordering and installing the hose and tire inflation kit this morning. when first putting the tee in place, i thought it was going to be near impossible to screw it all the way in and now i see you have a good amount of thread left as well. i'm assuming that is totally normal?

    So what was the connection you were making starting at 8:27 in the video? I too thought if you had an Spod, all you did was hook the compressor directly to the Spod, nothing going over to the battery.

    Tt Ss thanks for writing back. I’m a little confused by what your saying. I was gonna hook the power cables up and use the red and black wires for the switches to turn on the compressor with the spod. The built in circuit breakers are at the edge of what the compressor pulls

    TrailRecon did you ever clear this up. Interest question....IF running a SPOD also, can the ARB be just connected to it? U do run a wiring harness at 8:27, and then ALSO more pos/neg to the SPOD. Maybe 1 pos/neg for power and ANOTHER pos/neg for the on/off switch itself?🤔

    Purchased this ARB air compressor about a month ago bc of this video plus all my friends have them. Was pretty busy through the holidays so yesterday I was able to get out and hit the trail, went to air up for the first time and I got about 5 psi out of it before it shut off. I have it mounted under my hood in my 2012 jku. Haven't got a response from ARB yet. Thoughts? I have it ran through a MLC 6 controller..

    I have a 2005 Jeep Rubicon with a Spod. The Rubicon comes with a shelf on the driver's side that would hold the ARB perfectly. My question for you is since you have a Spod, why are you powering the ARB to the battery? I believe my Spod instructions said you can forego relay switches etc and simply run a power and ground from whatever you are installing right to the Spod to whatever terminal you want. That was one of the main reasons I installed the Spod - simplify installs of all the extra goodies I want.

  • @johnraahauge4552

    You could wire it directly to the SPOD, but then the compressor doesn't automatically turn off when you stop airflow at the tire. I would leave the pressure switch and relay in the harness and hook directly up to the SPOD. So big black/white and big red to SPOD and the small black and red shown in the video to the same SPOD terminal. That way you retain the auto shutoff of the pressure switch.

  • @chaosncheckt9356

    @chaosncheckt9356

    Interesting. So the SPOD would control the on/off and the pressure switch would do the auto turn off when the air flow stopped? So, three wires to one SPOD switch terminal and two wires to the same switch but the other terminal?

  • @johnraahauge4552

    @johnraahauge4552

    Yes, you get pressure on demand that way. Technically you only have to connect 2 wires to each since the two small black wires are part of the same wire.

    What's the benefit of using this over a portable air compressor? I've got a big heavy duty portable air comp. which refiles my tires from 15psi to 35 in around a minute; all i have to do is hook it up to the battery and push the on switch. Is there a benefit to this particular setup that i'm unaware of?

  • @TrailRecon

    If you have a compressor that can fill you tires in a minute then I don't think you need to worry about upgrading... that's very fast for a portable unit. My portable was very slow and this is much faster, plus I like the convince of just lifting the hood and flipping a switch and I'm up and running.

    @@n607rv For me it's the space requirement and convenience. I like to roll with the compressor at all times, and I'd rather hardmount in a spot I won't be storing anything else, to free up space where I could put other things. Never have enough storage space!
