It's interesting to see the difference in perspective from a hobbyist like Russ and a purist/enthusiast like Modern Vintage Gamer. Russ focuses more on the look/feel of a device and price to performance, whereas MVG focuses on the precise emulation quality, sound, and intense detail. Watching them both gives a good perspective of some usability/accessibility stuff that MVG misses, and some emulation detail that Russ misses.

It’s important to note that a 10x scale means times ten on BOTH the vertical and horizontal axis. So it’s 100 pixels for every single game boy pixel. For the display modes, this means a lot of room to replicate the original screen, using the pockets pixels like the original game boys subpixels

A lot of these consoles and games will not work as we already can see a lot of them are dying... So enjoy your consoles and your games... Because keeping a game on the shelf is not going to prevent it from not working.... I have the first Mario game ever made for NES that was never opened. I sold it and asked the guy if he would open and he said yes and when we opened it it didn't work and it did not work... The box was never damaged. If you buy this from like Amazon or another website besides the actual company then you're going to pay twice as much.. I have one and I love it. My original game boy and my game boy SP sit on the shelf... But that does not mean they sit there and I don't play them... Why crazy people that collect video games? Want to have a console or a video game? Sit on the shelf and never touch is beyond me... The value of a video game is the value that someone's willing to pay... I had a similar experience with the Mister FPGA versus the Raspberry Pi. I don’t know why emulation gets such a bad reputation if precisely today it works better than ever and nearly perfectly. With today’s tech, most people won’t notice the difference between an FPGA and an emulator, so by all means buy an FPGA if you prefer (I did) but when it comes to just enjoying the games, a Raspberry Pi or an Anbernic portable console do the job perfectly.

At first I wanted the Analogue because I really loved the design but after learning a bit about the device I knew it wasn't for me. So I decided to buy the Miyoo Mini thinking it wouldn't be really good but at the end of the day I spent a looot of time on that Miyoo and I love it. It's not perfect (shoulders button are really annoying, should be more clicky) but it's so nice to be able to bring it everywhere and it's just cute. I play game on it I never played before simply because it feels appropriate. Like I don't want to play DuckTales on a 48" TV but on the Miyoo it's perfect.

There's a Miyoo Mini Plus out these days. On top of being a bit bigger, they did improve the shoulder buttons. Although this Plus version is bigger, it's still smaller compared to the other competition and it's the smallest 3.5 inch screen handheld of its type. I think the only downside I read is that some people have a bit of an issue with the screen loosening... which I'm hoping is fixed after the first batch of them.

The Analogue Pocket is definitely a very niche product primarily for those collecting GB and GBC games, or obsessing over the cycle-exact nature of fpga-cores. I am a retro geek myself, but It has come to a point in which I value convenience over authenticity. I think the most important feature of a modern retro device is its ease of use and portability. Like many people I live a busy life. I have short burst of time over in-between stuff, but it's not enough for longer "sink into a couch" retro gaming sessions. Having something like the Miyoo Mini with Onion OS and the "Game Switcher" app, retro gaming becomes EXTREMELY pickup 'n play-friendly. I have completed both Phantasy Star IV, Wonderboy in Monster World and Tales of Destiny. A feat that I haven't been able to do the last 15 years... I really believe that the convenience of easily being able to load in- and out of save states and games + having a device that can come with you wherever you go is one of the key features to make retro gaming possible to many people. :)

It doesn't try to play EVERYTHING and because of this, you can reduce size, complexity, and get rid of awkwardly positioned analog sticks. The 480p screen is also a real treat. I haven't jumped onto retro handhelds before the Miyoo Mini. And I am glad I waited. This is basically everything I have been looking for. The only single thing that could've made this console better was if it had a GBA SP form factor. (I personal optnion) I think that would've improved comfort. reduced size further and also protected the screen when it is not in use. :)

@@Chaosghoul Definitely... I guess the OG gameboy however, is something even collectors agree isn't optimal to play their games on. That screen was horrendous even in the early 90's. :) So I guess that's where the real benefit of having the Analogue Pocket comes into play. Authentic pixel grid, with the added benefit of backlight and no ghosting :) But yeah, it's definitely a niche product. 31:33 When you were showing the side-by-side with Link's Awakening DX on the Miyoo and the Anbernic, that was the most impressive thing to me in this whole video. The picture on the Analogue blew the Miyoo out of the water, and while the Anbernic had a noticably better picture (imo) than the Miyoo, it still couldn't compete with the Analogue. I love the size of the Odin but the analog sticks and face buttons are not quite perfect for me, and that prevents me from really wanting to use it compared to something more comfortable like the Steam Deck. If you’re an electronics enthusiast, then having the open FPGA chip in the device is a pretty great thing to have on top of the gaming. Getting into FPGA experimentation is usually an expensive proposition, this lowers the barrier for entry. The only other device that can also do this is the MISTER console FPGA. This is just the price of FPGAs they’re still not common enough devices to get those mass production cost reductions but this is about as cheap as it gets when getting an FPGA device

I think that it’s clear that the Analogue Pocket is for a market that isn’t compatible with the type of content Russ provides. I am honestly shocked at how some KZread content creators act like devices like Odin, Anbernic’s devices, and the Retroid Pocket 2+ (amongst others) don’t exist and are screaming the praises of the Analogue Pocket.

However, I found I played it a lot less than other emulation handhelds because it’s definitely limited in comparison. Also I didn’t want to travel with it because it would be expensive/hard to replace if I lost it and I’d also have to bring a bunch of carts with me. Unfortunately emulation is not completely flawless. Technically this isn't flawless either, but it's more likely to become near flawless cause of how closely it's mimicking the original hardware. For most of the really popular games you'll probably wanna play anyway, emulators should be adequate, and potentially better than the pocket or original hardware cause you might get better frame rate or features than you normally would. The analogue pocket will mimic the flaws of the original hardware too, except on a really nice screen and HDMI out. I got a pocket because I wanted to experience the original games as they were, quirks and all, but on a nice screen that could mimic the different iterations of the GB/GBC/GBA. There's also the future hope that this device will get custom firmware to mimic other systems and without carts, like SNES, NES, etc. If you wanted to get a modded GBA, modded GB/C, or modded versions of the other systems the pocket can play, you would end up paying well over $200 anyway, so this is a potential option for people who want original hardware and want lots of different systems.

I was able to play Yoshi's Island with the Snes9x current core and it played 100% full speed with lots of headroom (turning on fast forward stabilized at 115fps). I thought long and hard, personally, as I really, truly missed the old DMG I had in my youth. But then again, I'd actually miss the much bigger A/B buttons of the DMG. (I already find the ones on a modded GBP I have to be just too small for that real retro feeling.) And then there's what you talked about on price and convenience. The RG351V to me still is the main device for GB/GBC games (looking forward to the RG353V which might replace that in my arsenal) for when I've got the space. The Miyoo mini is what I take with me whenever I leave the house, since I can just put it in my jeans pocket to have it with me if I have to wait for something somewhere. I love this so much. I have a gameboy color and my original games I had from the 90s and I love that there’s now a hope for the games to continue to live on. I hope this does well. That texture reminds me of the plastic that gets really gross after a months of use. Don’t don’t know if it will, but that’s what it reminds me of.

My biggest gripe with these machines is that FPGA is touted as "not emulation" which I find to be a bold claim. This machine does not contain the same innards as the devices it replicates. Instead, it has to interpret the data it receives and output it based on functions "higher up in the chain" so to speak, because the components the cartridges normally access just aren't there. To me, that sounds suspicuously like emulation, only the place where it happens is different. With FPGA it assumedly happens on the chip, while run of the mill emulation does it in software. If devices using FPGA's are truly what they are puported to be, the situation at 13:30 wouldn't happen this easily.

Dude I can use a super Gameboy and a Sufami Turbo on my analogue SNES, and they work perfectly. I’m not super hung up on the details. Their products work well as advertised, whereas I’ve had a plethora of issues with my brother’s Retron 5 emulation device.

It is hardware emulation, not software emulation. Typically FPGA-based hardware emulation is more accurate than software emulators (and has almost no input lag), but that depends on the accuracy of the FPGA core being used.

35:35 RG552 Fun fact: If the L2 and R2 buttons are replaced with RG503's L2 and R2 buttons, then, it would be great because those on RG503 are taller and RG552 & RG503 has similar size. So, the buttons will easily fit on RG552, I guess. Love from Bangladesh ❤️

Ordered an Everdrive GBA mini and GB X7 recently. Won’t be getting an AP; using them with my standard GBA / GBC (both with IPS displays). AP is only really worth it if one has a massive cart library.

Well, either that or you don't have modded GBA and GBC consoles. If you add up the cost, the Pocket ends up being cheaper. Not to mention there's no issues that old hardware may have, and you have a rechargeable battery as well. Honestly I think the Pocket is too cheap for what it offers at $200, the only problem really is availability, because it's impossible to buy it for that price currently

@@seraph4581 I stand by what I said. AP is definitely worth it for those with old carts. It’s a lovely bit of hardware and can definitely see the appeal. Just think people may have different perspectives about it.

The biggest problem with the Analogue pocket is that the device should be an XL take on the original hardware so it was a lot more comfortable and adjustable for more systems. If it had been a 5" screen and it was a more ergonomic design while keeping the squarish front. It would have been worth the price. Second biggest problem is Analogue pocket full potential will literally take 2-3 years for it to be realized. Third biggest problem is the price and availability. Which makes all analogue hardware a non-starter for most. Even if the price in the end is justified because the hardware is all ultra customized hardware that otherwise just would not exist. As FPGA-based hardware is just expensive by default.

If playing original carts is that important and for that amount of money, you can buy an older GB and refurb it with a new screen, battery, case, etc.

Yes, but speaking as someone who owns a few modded Game Boy systems, the price of modding an old system with a new screen, USB-C charging and maybe some better speakers, ends up being not too far off the price of an AP, and the screens for the modded systems thus far all have quite bad lingering flicker effects. Don't get me wrong, I think modded Game Boy systems are great, but to me they still pale in comparison to what the AP offers.

Think about it like this is legit hardware that runs physical games and not just one game but every type of gameboy game, game gear games, Atari Lynx games, and neo geo pocket games, if you were to buy each of those consoles it be nearly 2 or 3 times the price tag of the analogue pocket and not to mention is a FPGA based console, when compared to a mister 250 is way better than 500. So yah it’s actually the cheapest option if you already don’t have the four handhelds consoles. Lol don’t forget sense it’s a FPGA chip console it can perfectly mimic real hardware, lol and did I mention it can do more than just gameboy, game gear, Atari Lynx and neo geo pocket games. Lol it can do everything the mister can so basically a stupid Amount of value.
