I’m not surprised they don’t do a clamshell. Engineering the hinges and cables to go through them is a chore

Yes accuracy matters

You can get protective stickers for the underside of the Pocket, because yeah it's super easy to scratch it up when docking otherwise. Grips help a lot with making it more comfortable as well. DAC support is supposed to come early next year going off a tweet from a couple months ago from Analogue. I've been looking forward to this. It's one of the only reasons why I would have wanted a MiSter since i already had a Pocket. Hoping MARS gets a lot more arcade compatability, excited for that one's potential! The dock could be improved for sure, but it works well enough for me since i have various compatible controllers and arcade stick.

I do agree i would like to see a dock that is more functionally focused with stability as opposed to serving as a nicer display piece like the current one. Aside from that, the Dock usability is really what hooked me on the Pocket. FPGA is great and all, but software emulators with heavy focus on accuracy and low latency already exist for these older mainstream consoles. But the Pocket and Dock combo feel like a retro-focused nintendo switch. I havent come across other docking solutions that feel so seamless in switching display and configuring the controls. 8bitdo has 2.4ghz controllers that can wake up the docked pocket, and a few of them dont even require the dongle and can just pair wirelessly with a specific firmware. It is very convenient. As a sidenote, i would also like to see more arcade stick compatibility since i have a ton of fun ones. But i would recommend checking the 8bitdo arcade stick. The switch version has wired, BT, and 2.4ghz. I modded mine with qanba gravity KS silent buttons and lever. Sanwas fit fine too. I would love to see the NG Arcade Stick Pro you have be allowed to work. That one has a nice size and weight. I put an ls-56 and seimitsu buttons in mine.

Yes I’ve seen a lot of hood mods for the 8BitDo one. I just don’t need another arcade stick. I’ve got three around me and a fourth in progress 😂

I'd like to see an on screen volume/brightness bar. I wish more cores would support memories. A last played game/core shortcut would be nice.

Cores need to be written from the start for save states so don’t really expect to see them added. It’s a very involved function

DAC non-support is what led me to buying the MiSTer. What was a pain turned into a blessing of sorts. I love MiSTer.

Lack of DAC still is so weird

I'm an auto designer by trade. The perpendicular docking scheme is a very bad design! Also, I fully agree that a horizontal layout is mandatory for comfort. Also would be a dream come true to see a Genesis/Saturn-style D-Pad. I really dislike that Pocket D-Pad. So basically, the only way I can play the Pocket is in docked mode with a Switch Pro controller. My lame wishlist is to see Pacman/MsPacman arcade cores. I ordered one of those Pocket grips from Etsy. Hopefully it helps.

Form is supposed to follow function but it seems like Analogue is too Apple-obsessed to care. They are a strange company that gets 3/4 of everything almost perfect but the other 1/4 is bewildering, especially their business practices. But sometimes it's what goes wrong that keeps us fascinated. :) @@VideoGameEsoterica

If the cores would be able to access the cartridge slot and or USB, I'm sure with a little work, you could probably expand the device with additional FPGA chips, but if could be tricky. I can hope, right?

Do you happen to know if the TE2 works? I've had that thing since it came out (the xbox version) but since it doesn't work on PC I still haven't actually gotten to use it and my Pocket Dock is slated to arrive sometime this upcoming week.

Honestly though I am interested to see how Analogue handles 3D stuff. I get the feeling they will try to be authentic over improvements which isn't as clear cut an issue as it is with 2D. When they end up doing the PS1 for example I could do with texture wobble being a toggle rather than something I'm stuck with on a high end device.

Yup, a PSP style form factor FPGA Analogue system with a good D-Pad would be a day 1 sale for me! 😎 I hate the claw like grip on the Analogue Pocket and the crappy D-Pad doesn't help on more precise games like shmups or Street Fighter 2!

I think your idea is great! It reminds me a bit of the tiger electronic handhelds lol but I just got my Analogue Pocket in the other day and I love it but I definitely agree there could be improvements. I honestly bought one because I figured the Analogue Pocket is generational in the same sense the Gameboy was when I bought mine in '98 and I figured although this is much much more expensive it's only gonna be more expensive as it goes it's unlikely to ever be in the ballpark of even modded Gameboys. The last core idea is actually a really good implementation. I'd like that a lot and that is definitely a big quality of life. I don't get the need for DAC support. I don't understand and not sure why so many people are waiting for it. I figured with how good a quality FPGA chip you get and this comes with that second chip this is gonna be a great machine down the road. I was not a fan of the CRT tv but this is for accuracy right? In that sense it's great to see. I am learning to archive my physical media :)

I will say as I use this more I do understand more on original hardware and why it’s so nice. I have been working through all my games and the accuracy is something I value a lot so it would be nice to actually get CRT compatibility. I had no idea they announced it over a year ago and still nothing 😶‍🌫️

You say you’re having issues with arcade sticks, does that include the 8bit-do? My pocket is still in the box, but I just finished building a dedicated pc for emulation and storage of roms and am finally gonna take it out of the box and do all the updates and install roms. But I LOVE fighting games and suck using a d-pad😢😂

Yep the 8BitDo is good for Pocket

I enjoy using my Pocket for mostly GB, GBC and GBA. And I agree I really do not like the dock. I am hesitant in using it. So I haven’t really used it to play on my television. I like how the pocket feels more streamlined compared to the Mister. And it does like 90% of what the Mister does. A pocket in horizontal layout like the original GBA would be great.

I've enjoyed my Analogue Pocket so far as a handheld FPGA device. But being portable is really the only thing it does better than my MiSTer. Genesis games sometimes have visual issues in my experience, TG-CD games often don't work at all, and the options available for each core are sorely lacking. The battery life is also not great, and it take *forever* for it to charge. I think it's the slowest charging device I have ever seen in my life. Still, I enjoy chilling with it occasionally when I just want to use a handheld for some quick arcade style experiences. As far as niche handheld gaming devices go, I've honestly liked my Playdate more. That thing is such a charming little device!

I had a bad experience with the analogue pocket recently. But it’s not what you would think… I played fire emblem 1 for a long time on my Apocket and it was awesome. The screen is just unmatched. I made it to chapter 20 and then got a gba with the age 101 screen. Needless to say, the hand feel was awesome compared to the Apocket. It took me for hours and days. Next thing I know I’m on chapter 27. I was stuck on chapter 27 for a few hours. I thought 🤔… ima play another game. But got reeled back to fire emblem because it has a great story. My gba batteries died and I took my rechargeable batteries out of the handheld and put them to charge up. I then put my gba fire emblem game I’m my pocket and there it was!!! It loaded up from chapter 20 from sleep mode😮. It went from 16 hours to 12 in a matter of seconds. I’m just now caught up to the storyline and still stuck at chapter 27. It is an awesome game and anyone who loves rpgs should give it a go. It’s like an upgraded chess game. I love strategy games so it’s right up my alley. For everyone out there my game is a legit USA Nintendo product. The game just happens to save after every move.

I have fire emblem sacred stones and I’m just waiting to get into it. I usually restart once any of my characters die. Thats why it might’ve took maybe 3-4 times the said time it took to finish each level and total gameplay.l recorded. I don’t regret it because at chapter 26 it asked me to do a side mission. It happened after saving nino with a lord and talking to jaffar after. And got a upgrade for a thief for Matthew after killing Sonia. Awesome experience and looking forward to the sequel and every game after that. Happy gaming.

Good to know, i had a similar experience when i accidentally quick loaded a save state in Pokemon on emulator and lost 5 hours. Honestly i don’t like save states on games that have a real save function.

They should have use a usb-c cable instead of a connector on the dock... this is how usb-c dock for PC are working now. You should try connecting a usb-c extension cable and see if it work !

Hmm I almost wana wait on the dock until there is a revision or maybe just a simple type c plug and play alternative… don’t love the idea of this as is. (I know with the fpga on the dock that’s not possible) however, something to extend from the dock that plugs into the pocket would be nicer.

Yes. The core isn’t done. So the cd audio is not correct

In the core options, change the 'Audio Timer' setting to around 925000 and the CD audio should start to sound OK.

A GBA style of device would be awesome! It is wishfull thinking but as a company I don't like them. Shipping is still complete bonkers with rates up to €60 for a single device. Also the out of stock problem has plagued them ever since this company has been founded and still is to this day a problem. I had to wait 2 years even before getting the chance to order the Pocket. I have a SuperNT and love it but it has been out of stock forever and they will only be doing 1 more run if I remember correct. Analogue is also still a scalpers dream company for that reason. To many shady things but they make very good devices.

Man, the upcoming CRT filter has me MAD hyped for the "soon" (18 months and counting) OpenFPGA Display Mode update. I'm visiting my folks and have it hooked up to my old plasma TV and it looks amazing. Controller support is the once place where MiSTer embarrasses the entire %&*#@ing landscape, as far as I'm concerned. Better than Analogue. Better than Android. Better than Retroarch. By far, it's the greatest for controller support.

@@VideoGameEsoterica after some thought I may have been too hash. For the consoles it was designed to play gb,gba etc they are good. For cps2/neo geo the Dpad just doesn’t cut it, which is fine as it wasn’t designed for them, but if and when neo geo pocket eventually comes they will not be good enough and that’s a shame because seeing SNKvCap on the screen but having those controls will be tough

Honestly, as a portable, I would rather use a cheap Anbernic device. Better in the hand and much better D-Pad. The Retroid Pocket 2S has my eye now. It looks really nice but at least on Amazon, the price approaches the cost of the Pocket.

The original Game Boy DMG is by far the most comfortable vertical handheld form factor; I don't know why companies continue to gravitate towards smaller model designs that then require additional grips to feel comfortable. As for improving what we already have; additional controller support for sure. The Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad is probably my favourite 2D controller (along with the Sega Saturn Japanese pad); it'd be great if the Dock was smart enough to recognise any USB controller plugged into it and then allow you to map button presses to Analogue OS inputs. Finally; DAC support. We've indie devs, and the RetroTink 4K already providing integration into original resolution output; Analogue are so late with this and always seem to be kicking this can down the road.
