We have a 2020 Odyssey in the family. Having owned around 20 Honda's over the course of my life this has been the only one with quality issues. Here's the list experienced in the first year of ownership: 1. Bent 3rd row seat bracket (from the factory) prevented 3rd row seat from folding 2. Failed Sat radio antenna. 3. Sliding doors on both sides rub so much on the inside door jambs it wears the paint away. Check the forums, this is widespread. 4. Crackling on the speakers even when audio is off. There seems to be a TSB for this now. 5. Warped brake rotors. No, we don't brake hard all the time. 6. Squeaks and rattles from rear seats 7. Improperly installed rear door weather stripping from the factory. Despite all this, it drives so well for a van you can forgive the annoyances.

My wife promised that we can get a minivan if we have more kids, so I impregnated her again in hopes of becoming a VTEC dad. She broke her promise and is still resisting. Maybe if she sees more young and attractive families like yours, she’ll cave in. Our 2019 Outback 3.6 Touring is too small. My 2016 Honda Accord EXL is way roomier and can better handle a rear facing child seat and still enough room for passenger in front. I love your Sienna. Toyotas from that era are so smooth and just go on living forever.

My 2021 Sienna gets an average of 34-36 miles per gallon. The only time I like to go fast is when the children are not on board. But since it’s a mini van, I drive them to daycare and to the park, hardly want or need to go fast. That gas mileage tho… fabulous. Fill up once a month. On long road trips, it’s comfortable and love the smart cruise control. The Honda is nice but the styling of my XSE version turns heads, surprisingly. I’m really happy with my 2021 Sienna.

We have a 9 year old and 3 year old twins. The Odyssey was the best fit for us. We could put 3 car seats side by side in the second row and keep the third row seats down. As a result, we can keep our City Select double stroller unfolded in the cargo area, making it easier to get the family in and out the door. We can keep everything in the under basket and cup holders on the stroller when we put it in the van or take it out of the van. Cabin watch and talk is another must have feature. But I agree that for the price on the Elite trim, they really need to have the 360 camera…. I went from a big BMW to the Odyssey and my wife still has her X5. When we test drove the different vans in 2013, at the time, the Odyssey was also the best driving and easiest for me to adjust to. Driving dynamics in vans have come a long way and more competitive, but when we upgraded from our 2013 to the 2019, the Odyssey was still a better fit for us than the other makes. If they could make it a hybrid but with a V6, add the 360 camera like the Acura MDX…. SH-AWD would be interesting, especially as hybrid batteries would lower the center of gravity on the vehicle and change the driving dynamic even more…. But they do need to smooth out the stop start feature, especially if they make it a hybrid vehicle.

Objective yet personal review. Good job. We just bought 2021 Honda Odyssey because of engine and smooth transmission. We also can’t stand the design lines of Sienna and it’s loud cabin and also the non-removable seats. The last thing parents want is extra trouble and low power when hauling the entire family with a weak hybrid drivetrain. We have also took our Odyssey to the snowy mountain area the past spring. It actually performed a lot better than expected. We will swap to snow all season tires from Michelin for next winter season.

Slight appliance nerd here. Regarding the vacuum having a bag. Studies have shown that bagged vacuums are better for allergy suffers because they contain dust and debris better than bagless. Without a bag, small dust particles can still escape through the seals of the dust cup. I've gone back to using bagged vacuums.

  • @MarcBookPro

I really want a Honda Odyssey with a Plugin like the Pacifica. I really don't like the Sienna very much either. I like that the Toyota is a hybrid but there’s no V6 option for heavy loads. The hybrid batteries are not good, there’s not enough energy in them. The second row seats don’t come out or don’t fold into the floor. It’s not wide enough for big loads or plywood. If you want this look in a car you should just go get a Highlander. Toyota would be better served to bring something like the European Pro Ace to the US with passenger capabilities. A hybrid minivan with these features would be the perfect vehicle for RVing if it had a pop top roof.

Lots of road trips then the fuel economy advantage is marginal (6.5l/100km sienna vs 8.5l/100km odyssey). Add lack of power to go from 90km/h to 130km/h to safely overtake a big trailer on a two lane road when the van is packed and in the sienna you are putting your life and your family's at risk. There is literally extra complexity by definition of adding something, but the hybrid drive trains at least produced by Toyota Are substantially reliable. And even if they weren't the 10 year 150000 mile battery warranty and 8 year 100000 mile hybrid drive train warranty Will more than cover the length that most people keep their vehicle for. @@KirkKreifels Thanks. I have a 2005 Sienna XLE (FWD), which I love and have owned since 2008. I get the same 16-17 in mixed driving (~40% street/~60% highway). On long highway trips I might see ~24-26. Have heard that Odysseys can push 30 mpg on highway-only trips thanks to VCM, which Odysseys have featured for many years. Interesting that Toyota never tried a VCM-like solution in Sienna and leap-frogged that technology to go hybrid instead. I like the V6 appeal but I trust there's a reason Toyota avoided VCM.

@@golfgra36 lots of issues with vcm reported. Odyssey owners install a device that disables vcm. You get better mileage but long term reliability issues. Hybrid is rock solid on reliability. Hybrids have one of the lowest costs of maintenance until the battery needs replacing which probably at 150k-200k miles. I want the odyssey but hearing of reliability issues is keeping me off right now.

For many buyers who are scared of change, it is a concern. In reality the likelihood of needing a new battery during the first 10 years is quite low. Still it's under warranty. Trust me, I own a Toyota hybrid, it doesn't worry me at all. But to many it does.

The rear air vents are the worst part of this van. They are small and not overhead. Everyone reviews this van from a drive perspective but forget why one buys a minivan, "Passengers". Try riding in the back of that thing during a Florida summer and you will gain a new perspective. I have owned three of them and will not be buying a fourth largely due to poor rear ventilation which Honda changed in 2018.

I love my CX5, but my needs have changed. It’s a perfect daily driver and gets good gas mileage, its just starting to feel a bit too small. I don’t want to go back to a sedan, and I promised myself my next vehicle would have a pano roof and a plug.

The reasoning for it was Honda transmissions although better then most wasn't long-term reliable and at the time didn't have time for their engineers to create a new higher speed automatic transmission that’s reliable. Toyota on the other hand will keep using old outdated reliable mechanical parts instead of letting you buy something that will break down 5-10 years down the road.
