Many questions here and I'm summarizing some of the answers: - is this laptop suitable for college work? Yes, this computer will work beautifully for most college students. Caveat here is if you're planning to run some heavy lifting with graphics or video editing. I edit with this on final cut pro and it works great. - can I use this for college programming work? Absolutely, this will work great. I use this for my side projects, upload the projects to the cloud. - what's a good price to get one? $7-900 is pretty good based on what I've found for the dual graphics mid range model with 512 GB storage. - should I get one? Yes :) it's awesome - how does this compare to modern macbook air? They're both different - the mbp works well for all types of workload, whereas the air is light, has long battery life but is a tad weaker on the processing front. Get the mbp if you can as its at a steep discount due to depreciation. - can I upgrade this laptop if I want to? Yes! The storage can be upgraded with a modern NVME ssd.

- which model should I get? I'd recommend the i7, 2.5ghz with dual graphics, 16gb ram. This is the middle tier model, and slightly more expensive than the 2.2ghz model with integrated graphics. Don't get the integrated graphics model as it's known to have graphics issues.

Thanks, answers to a lot of questions I have on my selection to upgrade from my 2009 MBPro 13" w/1TB SSD. Video editing is slow, but ok, export from iMovie takes a long time and now isn't working. My MB 13" case has the USB and other ports, along with a dvd player that I rarely use. Mine has a 2.26ghz , intel dual core processor and I didn't realize, a Nvida GeForce 9400m, 256mb card. I use it as a box with wireless key & mouse and a large monitor. It's a great machine. I'll check further, but I think I will go with the non-Retina MB and check if performance on each is comparable. I'm relooking at the Retina, not decided.

I'm getting mine soon as a secondary laptop. 😊

I totally agree. I purchased the same model on eBay for exactly the same reasons. It was a slightly harder decision (now in 2021) with the M1 now on the scene, as this is the most significant jump in terms of performace. However, in terms of my actual needs, and existing hardware it needs to integrate with, this is still great choice.

I bought it when it came out still have and use it for bills EMAIL and lite editing . I have a High end gaming pc for games . But apple givies you the latest os and it works great . I am waiting for one more year then its time for a new one . GREAT REVIEW .

I just bought my first Mac this year. End of 2022. I bought the Mid 2015 MacBook Pro, 256GB SSD, 16GB Ram and integrated graphics. I love the laptop so far, just typing this on the keyboard feels so good. I paid $400 USD for the laptop. It's labeled as factory refurbished and it's basically brand new. The battery only had 35 cycles. I can of course notice it's a slight bit slower in certain things compared to a newer model but for everything I use it for i.e. KZread, E-Mail, a bit of Audio editing and recording. So far I really like the MacBook, for my first Apple laptop I'm quite impressed with the quality of this 2015 machine.

Just a side note: If you do end up getting the MacBook Pro 15 2.2Ghz without graphics it was sold up until July 12th 2018. So really it could only be a 2 year old laptop and I feel apple will support this one for a while still.

Hello Zhia! Thank you soooooo much for this video, it was very helpful. At 6.36min you mentionned the upgraded model with dedicated graphic card for editing. I'm not sure what you're talking about exactly?? I'm very interested ;) I'm also curious to hear your advice on my situation. I currently have a 2013 macbook pro that I've been using for years. It's in great condition but I feel like it's time to upgrade it because video editing becomes a real pain - the app keeps shuting down and it's very slow. I run multimedia programs (like photoshop, premiere pro, adobe audition etc) on a daily basis. However, I often work with low resolution video, hd format etc. So in my head I don't I necessarly need the latest 2020 macbook since I don't work with heavy files like 4K. BUT, because I use video and sound at the core of my artistic practice I'm confused in what I should buy. Since I'm relying on the laptop for my profession smth tells me to buy the lastest macbook because it would probably last me longer + all the dowsides of this 2015 one. But I'm afraid to make a stupid decision by spending so much money on smth that might not be necessary. I hope it makes sense ahah.

Upgrading from a 2012 MBP. What I need is a computer that works (ie a keyboard that doesn't break or a body that doesn't overheat). Think I'll go with a 2015 until Mac can make a new laptop that functions properly.

This is a great upgrade for a 2012 - everything works great, even Big Sur would be fine. If I were to upgrade today, the M1 MB air is a very tempting one.

The 16 inch wont fit in my camera bags, and I've got a 2017 Imac at home as my work station. I just need something for the road that functions reliably.

Considering I bought a 2013 Macbook Air in 2020 and it was tremendous I'm assuming it would be. It's not like PCs are evolving like they used to.

I will say that my late 2013 15 inch with integrated graphics powers my 4k monitor at 60 hz with displayport and is not sluggish

The only thing is that it has a little tear in the charging cable which they had taped anyway . it came with the box and original charger. For 525£ i think its a good deal , i could find the 2015 macbook pro models for 470-480 but without retina! and scratched so im lucky

How many more years do you think this will last? I want to switch to Mac OS from windows, but I currently use a lenovo yoga 720 with an i7-7700hq, 16gb ram, gtx 1050, 1TB SSD. Is this Mac a significant downgrade or do you think they would be pretty even? I can get the dual gfx 2.5 ghz model with 16gb ram and a 1TB SSD for $1000 but would be willing to spend more on the newer 16 inch if it would be worth it to extend the longevity of the device much longer. I would hate to drop over $2000, but would think about doing it if seen worth it. I am a college student in the economics field but would like to teach myself some coding along with doing learning some video/photo editing. Opinions?

Great questions! I think the 2015 is going to be more than enough for programming course work. For editing you'll maybe wait a couple minutes longer but it's not a deal breaker. The 16 inch is not a 0-to-1 breakthrough for me, I can do the same things with the 2015, maybe slower but i don't mind.

There are only two versions of MacBook Pro 2015? 256gb with one graphic processor and 512 with dual? Which regular price for each? And is it big difference in productivity? Thank you!

Thanks for the video, but I have some advice to you and I hope I don’t sound pretentious. First cut this cut to show the computer itself with these music or put at the first of the video, put some lighter music, or just throw cinematic shots at the product while you’re commenting, it’s more straightforward that way and everyone will appreciate it. Second, put the pros and cons and experience first, price and value second and conclusion and thought in the end, not the other way around, because that way people will start to understand what the pc benefits them, instead of hearing your opinion first on how the laptop is. That’s it, keep it up.

It'll work great for light editing work, and for heavier workloads it'll take a little longer to render. You can always add a dedicated e-GPU later to boost performance if needed. Cheers!

2015's model is pretty good, that's why I'm recommending it :) But it works for non-gaming related use cases.

It's not a terrible deal for sure. If you don't need the dedicated graphics card then go for it. Otherwise I'd suggest getting the DG version for a bit more.

Thanks! It depends on what you need - if you don't need portability then a mac pro with a display will be good. But that's performance that you pay. Otherwise I think this is a great deal for everyday use.

Aminam the top end model I haven't played with it. But based on my early research, I found all of them except for the base model to be very capable. I use final cut pro and recommend it as apple has done a great job with it. Oh I didn't know that it's the lady model with optical. thanks for sharing!

Ku Syuk it should work great. Are you going to write apps or games? Games might need more graphics processing power, which you can add by getting an external gpu.

I use this for editing on final cut pro and I've seen the computer run hot whenever I have more different types of complex animation going on. But for a simple video like this one, it works great.

I found a maxed out 16gb, i7, dual GPU for 500 it has a cracked screen though (still useable but annoying) is that a good deal I’m planning on hooking it to my dual monitor setup anyways most the time

If the cracked screen is the only issue then it should be fine as you seem like you won't be needing the screen. Otherwise replacing the screen should be fairly straightforward but it'll cost a bit. Try to see if you can negotiate a better price

Video editing yes, crypto farming probably not. You'd need a powerful dedicated graphics card for that. I don't think even the 16 inch model would work well for crypto farming.

If you're upgrading from a 2012, this would be a great upgrade. Alternatively, for a bit more money, you can get the M1 Macbook Air.

13" Macbook pros for me are to small for the price! Not worth it, too many of them in stores and online but if I get a 2017 through 2020 15inch it's rediculisly expensive. Macbook pro 2015 is my best choice, good year and many users recommend MacBook pro 2015.

Thanks! Apple had a battery replacement program for overheating battery issues. If not, you can replace the battery online fairly easily.

I am looking into a MacBook for working mainly on Logic Pro X. I found a 2015 one 15in, retina, 2.5Ghz, i7, 16GB Ram, 2GB gpu, 1TB SSD. It includes Logic Pro X, Photoshop CC, Illustrator, etc. It’s being sold for $1,000 firm. Like I said my main purpose is Logic and maybe some light video editing for song videos. This laptop should work great for developing with ARKit and XCode. The wait and loading times might be higher than, say the latest M1 MBP, but for a beginner, it'll be fine.

Amazon most times overprices Mac products and pictures are not from the original MacBook so you might get a scratched up mac! I used apps like Letgo and OfferUp just need a good eye and try it out before purchasing and you'll get a great deal!!

Typical cycle is ~8 years. So we should see the 2015 receive updates up until 2023.

@@codingwithzhia after that you can still use it but with the older operating systems? Is there any drawback to not having the newest one?

@@Obamnaz Yeah, older OS would still be fine. The newest ones take advantage of faster CPU/GPU. You don't really need those for day-to-day work

I don't doubt it's power, I don't doubt its screen/keyboard quality..BUT I do doubt spending nearly half a grand for it to become obsolete pretty soon from apples software updates 👎🏻

I bought a 2019 MacBook Pro late last summer. Ended up returning it the next day and bought a 2015 13”. Best decision ever, but the new 2020 MacBook Pro with the new keyboard has me itching to upgrade lol.

You can put those savings into an iPad pro :) that'll be a good mix of devices for different usages. The 16 inch looks great but I think there are some deals to be had in the market due to the hype.
