    I’ve been searching for nearly three weeks deciding what to get, mba 2017, mba 2015 or this one. Your video really helps me decide considering that it’s quite expensive here in the Philippines even it’s like secondhand. But my laptop issued by the office caused me a lot of stress so I’m switching to this. In shaa Allah. I’ve been reading comments below too.

    I recently bought a base model MacBook Pro 13-inch 2015 over a base model MacBook Pro 13-inch 2017 for college and freelance work. Here are the points that made me get the 2015 one instead. - The 2015 one isn't slow by any means (thanks to Mac OS), I have to be starting to push the laptop to start noticing small hiccups and lags. For reference, I have another laptop that has a 7700HQ, GTX 1060, 16GB of RAM, an EVO 360 SSD. And I am a let-everything-open-in-the-background, use-2-to-3-desktop-workspaces-at-the-same-time kind of guy who's RAM usage is around 11-12 GBs 90% of the time. - 8 GB of RAM is good enough, especially if you don't consider yourself a power user. - The battery, at around 400 cycles is good enough for around 5-7 hours depending on how many apps I keep open (browser and VS Code are always open by default for me). - The keyboard is much much much better than the 2017 model imo (I believe Lenovo makes God-tier keyboards) and a lot easier and pleasant to type on. It took me around just an hour or two to get used to it while first setting up stuff on the MacBook. After that I could start getting work done right away. - The trackpad is smaller than the 2017 model, but is good enough for me, even for my big hands (for reference, I use my phone with a 6.55" screen with one hand a lot). - Plenty of ports. Even despite having a lot of USB-C stuff already, I like having not only USB-C ports on my laptop. - Magsafe is really convenient. - The 2015 model was around 150 USD cheaper and still in 9/10 condition with only one small ding on the side of the palm rest. Also, I only bought a MacBook Pro so I don't have to carry a lot of weight when traveling, while still being a laptop that won't make me want to pull my hair out. I don't need the kind of horsepower I mentioned I have already on the other laptop I mentioned above when I'm not at home.

    1. The RAM is not upgradable 2. The battery is *not* easy or simple to replace. It is held in place with an adhesive which you must dissolve with an acid in order to remove it from the chassis. This means low cycle count is crucial if you don't want to pay hundreds to apple to replace it for you.

    I think this model has 4 separate battery modules glued to the top case. Its not actually all that replaceable if I remember correctly. The great thing about the Unibody ones was that they really did have at least 3 solid upgrade paths. I don't know if complaining is worth it thought b/c the tight integration does allow for some nice performance gains, but still its a bit of a waste case in point the ram/battery of these retina MBPs

    Just by chance I saw a local listing on Facebook marketplace, the MacBook was listed as spares as it booted to the startup folder error, I took a chance, for £150.00 I got a fully functioning 2015 MacBook Pro. Long story short the SSD was upgraded but never screwed back in, over time it loosened until it became dislodged. Reseating and securing with the appropriate screw, a factory reset and an upgrade to Monterey brought it back to life.

    I'm going to college this year and I really need a new laptop, would you recommend me to buy this one or the 2017 MacBook Air? Knowing that I won't be able to change my computer for like 4 or 5 years. Also, how is the battery life please?

  • @MattBison

    @MattBison

    3 жыл бұрын

    Even though the 2017 MacBook Air is technically newer, based off the specs and your use case (College) I don't think that it is worth buying. For around the same price, the laptop in this video provides a stronger CPU, better storage options and a better keyboard to just name a few pros. For college work along both computers will be fine though in my opinion there is more value in the 2015 MacBook Pro. Battery life depends on who you buy it from so just watch out for low battery cycles. If you do that then you should have 8+ hours of life. There is a link in the description if you are interested :)

    If you're referring to the year, than I have been able to do all 3 of those tasks without any issue (as that is exactly what I have had to do for school). If you're referring to the 15 inch, then that is even better as the specs on the 15 inch outmatch that of the 13 inch. Either way you should be fine (although the new upcoming ARM based Macs look promising!)

    I’ve got the 15” 2015 MBP as a studio backup for Logic Pro X, it works great and should run Ableton no problem. Some nerd tips (budget permitting): - Get as much RAM as you can, 16 GB is 👌 - Get the fastest i7 processor you can over the i5. For audio production, hyper-threading more than doubles the performance in DAWs and you can run more tracks with more plugins and more power hungry synths. - Get the 15”, unless you’ll be using an external display, it’s a pain in the ass using a tiny screen with any DAW lol. You can get really good deals buying from people on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc. over a retail refurbish shop. You won’t pay tax (at least in the USA) and they’re typically cheaper since a store is trying to make a profit. Just be sure to test the hell out of it before buying (Google “MacBook Pro buying checklist” or the like).

    @@thereal_ineedHelp I like the 13 inch models more to be honest. They all come with dual cores though. I came across a 13 inch macbook air with 8gb of ram and a dual i7 from 2015. I kinda consider getting that one atm.

    I need a laptop for school and I know this one will do it but I needed to ask if I can play Minecraft on it. No other big games or something just school and Minecraft is this laptop the one for that?

    It should be fine - the fans may kick on but the game will run smooth :)

    To be fair, Apple computers (at least from this long ago) are not really meant to be gaming machines but I'm sure it can at least run Minecraft
