I’ve seen Tenet and I share the same sentiments. Some of the exposition was either barely audible in volume or too confusing to comprehend, though I was still able to follow the plot. It didn’t help that the two characters with the thickest accents (Kenneth Branagh and Dimple Kapadia) were given the most (important) exposition. So yeah, jaw-dropping and exhilarating but also confusing. EDIT: Now having seen it for a 2nd time but at a different cinema (to see if the sound mixing was different), Tenet is still just as mind-blowing as it was on first viewing. The exposition is much clearer and understandable, and makes more sense on second viewing, though there are still a few confusing points. I also picked up on the subtle foreshadowing, right from the opening logos. I have to say that Tenet was actually better on second viewing for me. Christopher Nolan, you crazy ass mastermind.

Just watched this last night in Canadian Theatres and it was such a spectacle. In terms of audio I believe that it was probably(?) the theatre's doing? The soundtrack FEELS like it needs to be approaching concert levels with how much presence it brings, and leaves the dialogue at a perfect volume IMHO. One thing I feel like you didn't address but always brings me back to Nolan films is the way he writes these mind-bending sci-fi concepts in a way where its not painfully explained in dialogue... Something that even marvel movies are guilty of. It makes you feel so much more immersed in the experience when they don't include the exposition character.

This is gonna be Christopher Nolan’s most divisive film he’s made so more. I saw this film with my dad who usually hates these kinds of films, despite me telling him not the fucking come because he won’t like it but he did, and he hated how loud, Long, and Confusing it was. For me personally I have no idea my opinion. It looks great, Sounds Great, Has some really good action, holy fuck he blew up a actual 247 plane, Holy fuck what is happening. But there’s also some moments during the movie and particularly the first 30 minutes where the editing feels like it was very over edited.

That's my opinion as well (and my dad's too), I was really worried after the opera scene and before Elizabeth Debicki's introduction, because the editing was so quick that I was wondering if after the film I'd see an article that said that editing was a nightmare and that the film was taken away from Nolan and chopped up. After Debicki's intro, the editing did calm down.

@@nathanschroeder9104 This is different. The part of the film I'm talking about was far too swift. A couple of times JDW was in one place then all of a sudden he was in another without us seeing how he got there. Dunkirk for the most part showed everything it needed to show, especially given how two of the main narratives took place over a short period of time. In Tenet I momentarily wondered if stuff was missing, but I realised that the stuff we didn't see would not have been necessary to include, so I get why they felt the need to not show it.

One thing I felt Nolan should have done better was the transition scene. For example, one moment the protagonist would be in Tallinn and then he would just show up in Italy. I’m basically saying that it didn’t feel natural, but Inception did a better job the location transitions. Overall I really enjoyed the movie 8/10

Just saw it in New Zealand and the audio was exactly as you described it. But I believe the cinema I visited tried to compensate for the dialogue audio by turning the whole thing UP, leaving the audio at a usual audible level whilst the score and remaining sound were almost too loud! But in all fairness, this was completely complementary to entire experience of the film.

I've just came out from cinema 30 mins ago and it is the first day of the UK release. I don't know whether it's just me or what, the music and explosion and background sound is just too loud. In the third act I have to cover my ear a few times in the cinema. The concept is really cool, but I think the pace or the overall structure of explaining things/concept could be better. It's like you're half confused the entire film. You're trying to figure out sth and when you think you sort of get it, the story throw you more even more complicated concept which you ended up being confused again. I give it a 7/10

I did have problem hearing the characters in my screening in Ireland. Which was in IMAX, it was the best conditions I could see the film in. I honestly think the sound design and score being louder than the dialogue is intentional. Nolan really doesn’t want you to think to hard about anything. He just wants you to be on for the ride. He’s done that with other films before (bane and a lot of coop in interstellar). That’s just what I thought, though I know a lot of people would find that annoying

Saw it at the cinema in NZ and the sound mix definitely had moments of being clearly off the mark. Remember thinking at the time what a weirdly amateurish error that was for a Nolan film. I'm a real sucker for Nolan's brand of think-y blockbusters but the philosophical and ethical conundrums of a world in which time could flow in reverse got absolutely crushed beneath 150 minutes of people punching each other and cars crashing. It's entertaining enough but it just means the emotional stakes are pretty low in terms of audience engagement with the very under-cooked characters. Like, technology this, time warp that but why should I care if I'm not invested in any of the characters. Kenneth Branaugh's Russian accent baddie was just plain goofy. It was like a bad Bond villian. A villian is always a great opportunity to flesh out the complexity and shades of moral grey in a film but Tenet couldn't be bothered. Not bad, solid popcorn entertainment but it really felt to me like it was playing dress ups as a deep film when it just isn't. Bladerunner 2049 is an example of a film that I think merges action with character development and themes in the way I think Tenet has failed to do. 7/10.

I mean what Nolan film really has great characters. Especially in this new era of Nolan films. Inception, interstellar and dunkirk don't have great characters there plot driven films and sometimes you got to make sacrifices. For me this is more unique then having another generic character arc.

@@ousamahachoumi838 Well, I think there was a point to the impersonal, zoomed-out perspective of Dunkirk (which I absolutely love). Dunkirk and WW2 didn't happen to a person, they happened to a generation caught in forces far greater than the sum of the individuals within it and the film captures that beautifully. I also think Inception and Interstellar had better drawn characters, at least in terms of far clearer character motivation. I've only seen Tenet once but I couldn't even tell you why the "baddies" wanted to end the world or the "goodies" wanted to save it. Wouldn't it have been so much more interesting if there weren't "goodies" and "baddies" and both parties had a logical perspective and justifiable morals? In terms of the "blank hero" as audience guide, there is an art to it which Tenet does not nail. Something like Josh Brolin's character in No Country for Old Men is a good example of a well cast central character with few defining quirks of personality.

I wouldn't say I had an issue with the sound mixing drowning out dialogue when I saw the movie. But let's just say this... It's mixed aggresevly! There's no way you would fall a sleep watching this in the cinema. The action is just bang on in your face (sound wise). The movie is a masterpiece. But it needs way more viewings than just one to really grasp everything that's going on. The movie never takes a pause. So the information you're being given is just piling up. Awesome movie though!

I’ve been thinking about how to approach this review on Tenet without giving the impression of bashing the movie or hating on it. Cause I did like this movie but I certainly have a lot to say. Let’s start with this, I was like everyone else with Tenet. I was super excited, who wouldn’t be! Christopher Nolan directing, big budget summer blockbuster, with a complex plot, awesome trailer and a great cast! I’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time and as soon as I found a showtime for my city I decided I had to go. So I saw Tenet and I have to say, this is a Christopher Nolan movie. It has his style of direction all over it. The complex and dense plot, big action spectacles and a long runtime. Will people like it, most likely unfortunate for me not so much. What really bothered me about this movie was the plot and how Nolan told this story. It didn’t feel cohesive or even understandable really but rather very confusing, rushed and the outcome of it all made me question what was the purpose of all that just happened. Even some of the plot points of this movie that kinda make sense doesn’t actually do. Like I didn’t really know much about the villain or his goals and there wasn’t enough character development to him other than a cliche evil plan, him being just a jerk but the actor who portrays him did a good job. The acting of this character gave an impression of unintentionally being funny and entertaining. But a lot of this movie felt like it was trying to be an extravaganza of action scenes, set pieces and dazzling spectacles. Luckily It does accomplish that though, a lot of the times. The action is really well done and does a lot of the spectacles. I just wish that the movie presented a more compelling story, because it felt as though it was kinda trying too. The story, plotting and even sometimes the screenplay felt so jumbled throughout the entire runtime. It tries to be so intellectual and complex but at the end it didn’t succeed at it. Overall Tenet wasn’t as great as I hoped for but, big and sometimes fun action scenes, good acting, sound design, and the look of the movie are all positives for Tenet. Maybe I just wasn’t smart enough to appreciate all this movie had to offer and that’s unfortunate, but I did have some fun with Tenet and think most people will enjoy it.

Regarding the sound mixing. Here in Germany it was the same. Saw it in English with subtitles which normally annoy me but with this film I appreciated them a lot :D Interstellar had and has the same issues for me. Hans Zimmers Organ is just way to loud to understand anything... Why does Nolan do this to us???

The audio levelling was definitely an issue, particularly in scenes with that staccato synth-bass score entering the third act, but Ludwig's score was such a highlight for me that it didn't bother me on a first watch.
