I got my Quaker parrot at almost 4 and a half months old, he still had a little bit of that baby bird look in his eyes. He was so easy to tame, took a little under a week for him to start crawling on me, a little under two weeks to step up, and about at the two week mark exactly was when he let me scratch him for the first time. Id recommend Quaker parrots to anyone tbh, I’m supposed to get a ringneck next month or in April. I feel like they’ll be easy if you work with them right, but slightly more of a challenge haha. Now that I have a Quaker already maybe he’ll follow my Quaker parrots lead a little 😅

I hope you get a wonderful IRN. Quakers are very different. Far more affectionate, have more of an affinity for people. Your IRN is less likely to want to be touched. My Quaker always wants to be petted. LMK how your IRN is!

Our local parrot expert says that Indian Ringnecks and related birds (Alexandrians, Derbians and Moustache Parakeets) will lose their tameness if people don't spend A LOT of time with them for their first year. They kind of revert to being wild. (I've heard Lovebirds are the same way. ) It probably makes it a lot harder to re-tame them once that happens.

For sure! It’s been a great experience so far, challenging. I hope it helps a lot of people out there. Me? I’m being patient with him- by my side.

What does Dr. Clubb say about keeping dusty birds like cockatoos with New World species?

With Indian Ringneck’s, especially ones that have not spent whole of time with humans being hand raised from hatching, it’s going to take months if not years to tame one. They are very smart and stubborn birds. Patients and time is key with these Birds and take it slow, you can’t rush these birds, but once you able to gain trust, you’ll hopefully have a friend for life 🙂

Thanks for posting to me. He was hand-fed but I think that’s it. I’m seeing a touch of interest but that’s it. I’ll take it slow.

@@ParrotBliss yeah unfortunately as you know, hand fed doesn’t mean hand raised and that’s the key for these guys. Some just will never become tame.

@@amandabeddis3168 My female is tame, but I raised and fed her. True with any parrot, but you are right- with an independent species… Jules wants to be part of the flock, so I have that advantage. He stays close by instead of getting as far away from me as possible.

My heart droped when I heard that you clipped your birds wings to be able to train him😢 I don’t belive in wing clipping and feel sad for him beeing used to fly free in your big poolarea. I truly believe that a bird would rather be able to fly than go to a coffeshop😢

I know- I’m not thrilled, but I don’t want to risk losing him. I’ve had birds get out of a feather or harness- and it is so he can go anywhere, including a walk around the block. Believe me, I did it for his safety but next time I will try something different because I’m not happy either 😞

@@ParrotBlissyou don’t have anything to explain to anyone! If you thought it was best for you and your bird for his wings to be clipped in the beginning, you have nothing to explain. This person probably doesn’t even have a bird. In a lot of cases, a scared untamed bird with full flight can literally kill itself flying into a window not knowing it’s there, or get lost in the wild with no way to feed itself and probably get eaten by a larger predator bird or animal. You have nothing to explain! Clipping a new birds wings in a safe and appropriate way does not make you an animal abuser in any way.
