Is Suspension A Good Idea For A Trials Bike?
Спорт
My hero's in trials riding all seemed to run some kind of front suspension and I could never really figure out why, it's heavier, less accurate and expensive. I decided to give it a try with some borrowed Rockshox Pike DJ forks that are blatantly too long for the geometry to see what the fuss was about...I ended up getting very surprised!

When I was a kid, a mullet bike was a 24” or 26” bike with a 20” BMX wheel on the front because the kid smashed up the other one and that’s all they could ‘obtain’. Legally or otherwise.

Ali, I really like your comment about trying to keep your videos family-friendly. You've surely go lots of young viewers who will look up to you and want to imitate you - glad you take that seriously. Also, like your comment about keeping your body safe to extend your riding years. Starting bike trials at 60, I really get that idea. If I can practice skills at low heights or near soft surfaces - I am all for that!
By far my favourite youtuber and rider! I ride trials on my mtb but soon i'll buy a inspired flow 2020 and its all because of you! keep up the good work Ali!

nice... I remember Hans Rey always riding the GT Zaskar with a Judy SL. I still have a 26" trial bike with a judy SL and the fork was really stiff by that time :-)

Ask Hans Rey, Jeff Lenosky or Ryan Leech. They used to ride trial with suspension fork 15-20y ago. :)

Wonderful. Loving all this new experimentation. Keep it up.
Super nice video, Ali! Love the combination of riding, talking, fun, laughs and new things! Looking forward to your next video! Cheers! ❤️
Dayum, you make everything look so easy! Mad props
Great video Ali! When I first got my Hex I thought my wrist were going to break off because I was so used to suspension and as you know not very fluid. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to continue but I finally got over it in my wrists. I'm still battling tendonitis in my elbow (for like 8 months now!) which I think suspect is partly to do with me riding a rigid fork, partly sucking and partly being old. I've wondered if having a little bit of suspension would be a little easier on me. It's good to see that having front suspension didn't really make that big of difference on techniques as I thought it would. Then again, you're super human! Cheers!
I had forks on my t-rex for a while. Was fun!
I like the tone of your commentary, always calm and clear and never boring! Very interesting. I have seen Danny and Duncan a few time in the streets, never been lucky enough to meet you yet, maybe one day!
This brings back so many memories of my early trials days here in Canada, Circa 1998 Jeff Lenosky Ryan Leech North Shore Represent 🤘
Looks really cool, very interesting to have different ideas and mixing things up as a pose to just riding normally
I really enjoyed this video. Great info well presented. 10/10
Sick video as always
This is the video i needed thank you! I was confused about doing trials on my dirt jumper!
You raise my spirit to come back riding with the same setup (26" chromo frame trials with front suspension).. thanks :)
Nice vid - interesting concept. You brought up some old school riders running front and (sometimes) rear suspension. I wonder how much of that was rider driven versus sponsors pushing new products? In Hans Rey's heyday, there wasn't the breadth of biking disciplines. Within mountain biking, it was pretty much just XC, DH, and way off to the side was trials but the bikes hadn't become nearly as distinct or specialized. Keep it up sir!
Awesome video again Ali

Wow! Crazy to see how precised are your hops. Both rear and front wheel positioning. Crazy skills as always! Now I should teach some tricks on front wheel too, you showed us, that it is doable with sus fork
Perfect perfect perfect and easy to set up!👍🏾
Awesome stuff! Keep up the good content. Nice to see how you keep pushing yourself to get it to the standard you wanted. Glasgow is very grey unfortunately when it’s wet. Which is often. 😂
Ryan Leech has been running suspension for about 20 years :D
series of fails at 4:30 more educational than most tutorial videos achieve...kudos for the honesty
I love your riding and try some trials style myself but I can relate to what you where saying about the style of bike. The best video for me was when you did the trials bit on your 5010. Normal trials stands far from normal mountainbiking and just a small croud looks at this. But if you go on your full sus like Akrigg then a whole lot of non trials guys get “inspired” ;-p. Keep up the good work Ali, hope you don't feel the blues to much these days.
Thinking out of the box is pretty cool :-) good ideas you have :-)
We use reverse mullet, 26 rear 24 front, on our mail delivery bikes in Australia. It allows the front load to be lower which is more stable. Been that way for nearly 30 years.
Years ago I ran a marzochi short travel fork on my rocket pro trials frame... made it really fun for street, the preload of the forks worked well for big bunny hops up walls, etc
Ali this literally looks just like my bike now haha! Awesome video btw! 💯
Back in the 90's when I rode trials, I never rode without a front shock on my 26" bike (which was a modified mountain bike), so it just seemed normal to me. I had a rigid fork on my 20" bike and if you didn't land right from high drop offs, you'd definitely feel it.
9:13 What a smooth front whel action :)
Bike looks amazing with them forks I would keep
Really good content you are puting out man! 👍👍 How about doing a video about geometry, pros and cons. Like to see you compare the pink and the blu 😊
Bringing back the Ryan leech style trials bike 👍🏻
That last spot w/ the posts and stuff in the ground was really cool... I'd even ride BMX there.
Awesome experiment!
9:36 idk why but this just blew my mind. Mad skillz
Hi Ali another great film, but as far as suspension forks go I myself find them hard going but as I am fifty next month I do admit to preferring RIGID forks up front and with my hard mountain bike I pretty much ride with the forks locked and so I am thinking about swapping these out for Rigid forks instead and I also have a set of SE RACING BMX cruiser handlebars on this 29er hardtail of mine. However I think that experimenting is always a good idea and without this we would never know if it is right or wrong.
Nice!!! Suspension FTW. Those hooks scared me though! I'm not doing those with mine, even though it is possible.
It looks so good
I actually once asked Hans about this and he told me exactly what you said about the bike being more relatable. He wanted to promote mountainbiking hence he used a "normal" mtb with suspension that people could relate to.
I love how the bike is always quiet :D
I genuinely can't believe how well that worked! I've also heard from one 90s pro that he originally switched to suspension to be able to ride more moto style, carrying speed and rolling more stuff. Would be interesting to hear if there's anything to that.
Nice job 👍, your bike is awesome 🤸

Ali, any chance of you doing anymore front wheel tutorials?? Id love to see front wheel hops, fakie nose manuals or g-turns! Been trying for ages and your tutorial videos are really helpful. Great riding as always!
What you have there is a dirt jump bike with a slightly high BB. Kind of funny because my "trials" bike is an Octane Void with a rigid 29er fork. It kills my wrists on drops, and I have often wondered about going with a 100mm DJ fork w/ 300 lbs of air.
Stg yt at the moment! I just looked and it said I was unsubbed! Been subbed for years and ofc I immediately resubscribed. Hate this algorithm
Yes, Its good, I did that to my bike :-)
3 yrs ago i have a two brake dj bike that i rode trials. Twas a Da Bomb Tora Bora with Duke U turn Shocks. Then upgraded to Sonic Boom 26", then into a rigid fork. Till now im riding a DJ-built-trials bike. The only thing with older supension models is its heavy weight and high wear and tear, but handy when doing higher drops.
How does this guy only have 100 k he deserves wayyyyy more he is a god
1:40 We in texas like to tip cows.... I never thought about tipping flies. 🤔 lol, thanks for the good content... That drop in the opener is ridiculous
Maybe look at handlebar-mounted lockouts if you end up testing another pair of forks later. Nice video!
That's great It's so cool
Hey Ali! Thanks for all your content, i love watching your videos! I have a question. which Five Ten shoes do you use?
hey ali, another "most entertaining video of the week", but i do ave a question, why did you go back to the original sprung tensioner. I like your titantium design very much, so much indeed i had to make one for my fourplay aswell :)
Hey Ali great vids. I've always ran front suspension (no lockout) ans my bunny hop is always lacking power seeing you experiment makes me want to switch to rigid. Could you do a vid on rigid forks for street riding? Thanks and keep up the great work!!!
Stoked that you're riding the Danny Mac signature Stamps
That carbon LB rim definitely can take all the abuse. Looks like I make a good decision, just bought it.
Bmx and trial bikes is what i love. I dont have 1 yet but 1 day i shall and i will practise hard
While watching your videos I've noticed your drops are so smooth and nice and could you tell me some tips or tricks to not land so forcefully everytime I even go off a small bump. Say I drive off a sidewalk onto road, even the like 4 inch drop hurts my wrists and arse (kinda the same way you dropped down that wall at like 14:07 but its only 4 inches)
I’ve seen Hans Rey do this in the 90s. He talked about the advantages but I’m old and it was long enough ago I can’t remember what he said😊. I think I remember something about clipping the front tire on something and having that give help you get up as one
Martin Ashton also mentioned putting a sus fork on a tiny trials frame to do eleven foot drops in one of GMBN videos, so I guess it must be kind of a life stage for trials legends

There were also pics of him in the late 90s/2000s MBUK pieces with headshock forks occasionally.
I would love to see if you can do trials on a dirt jump bike, maybe just with a lower gear ratio and high rise bars. Hopefully one day you’ll have a dirtjumper to play with haha

Would like to see it too. I have a dirt jumper but stupidly I don't jump it (just nowhere nearby really). Would be cool to see what an actual trials rider can do with one. Maybe even motivate me to do it too, and try in an area that isn't built up or in the forest either.

His balance is so good he could probably do it on a track bike.
I ride on a soft fork and I like it, maybe not so professionally but it's cool and comfortable) I also changed the settings of the fork , reduced the volume of the air chambers, which reduced the swing
I’d love to see you try with an 80mm fork. Seems like it would suit the geometry better. Very cool video. I’ve always ran forks on my 26” trials bikes.
I couldn't do this s*** in 20 years practicing you got skills dude
great video. I really want to get into trials, just basic stuff.
I’m eager to see how the bike does on proper dirt jump and pump track, and techy singletrack… aside from some geometry disparities you’ve essentially transformed the bike into a dirt jumper with the 100mm squishy fork.
THOSE HUUUUUGE SMOOTH HOPS UP THOSE MASSIVE STAIRS, SELL MY SOUL FOR HOPS LIKE THAT
Ur amazing at trials
I see an advantage with using those forks it would be good practice because if you can get used to that it'll be a lot easier the ride with your Ridgid forks
Man, G-turns look so smooth, I could never get the hang of those back in my trials days :-(
Great video Ali! Surely someone can sort you out a set of 80mm fox 36 or Pike DJ's!
Cool idea! Soft drop

I'd like to know that as well.
My dj bike I made similar to your bike, my rigid forks did not raise the BB a bit and my front wheel lift not consistent so I put a 100mm fork and it did well, I also ask tips from trials rider James Barton who uses dj bike for trials.
