Interesting fact not mentioned is that the area was the old tuna fishing village. It was populated by people from Porticello Sicily and Azore islands Portugal. All the big name tuna canneries use to be there.

Little Italy San Diego where you can find Italian immigrants working in cafes and restaurants and speak Italian to the Italian patrons Love San Diego little Italy. Forget New York little Italy. There is nothing left. Italian students or immigrants come to San Diego and never leave. Job opportunities are better here than Italy. Italians in the northeast have no clue...they going to the Venetian in Vegas..😂

I was there a week ago. Marco Li Mandri, CEO of New City America, and his staff have done an amazing job. That said, how sad that the gentlemen in this episode mention Gianni Russo, a two-bit mob movie actor ("The Godfather"), rather than A.P. Giannini (founder of Bank of America) and Sgt. John Basilone (Medal of Honor and Navy Seal winner, WWII). There are huge piazzas and statues of them in San Diego's Little Italy. Did Mr. Valentinetti not notice them, either? This is all-too-typical of how we, as Italian Americans, have internalized negative Hollywood stereotypes instead of honoring our true historical heroes. And yes, as per the comment below, it is also revealing that the non-Italian priest speaks better Italian than the other "proud" Italian Americans. Again: Instead of focusing on food, why not focus on putting beautiful Italian words into our mouths, as well? Andiamo!

Did you perhaps mean he was awarded the "Navy CROSS?" Also, it was not "Sgt. Basilone." He was an E-7 "Gunnery Sergeant" (GySgt,) not an E-5 "Sergeant" (Sgt).
