Is Roblox stealing millions of dollars from young game developers? In this video, I break down Roblox's monetization system-the Developer Exchange (DevEx) program-and why I think the 24.5% revenue share hidden beneath its layers will only bring harm to this game dev empire in the long term.

It's crazy just how bad it's gotten. I've found a few little gems that are actually fun games without any aggressive microtransactions/pay to win mechanics. Ragdoll Universe is a great one, It's a fully fleshed out combat game that plays well, is still being developed, and could honestly probably run as a game on steam if it got enough traction. The microtransactions are all cosmetics related, and don't give any sort of advantage in game. I've bought a few of them myself, and i'm fine with that style of monetization.

As a developer on the platform, I can say DevEx rates are outdated. Recently in 2019-2020 they actually changed prices for robux to be more expensive which makes users not want to spend their robux as much. DevEx rates are off of when robux were 10 bucks for 1k robux, ect. I would love a higher cut of my work since I am a solo developer and I would love to continue making content for the community I slowly grew over the past 4 years. On the other case of Roblox wanting to expand to full on studios and older users they are definitely going to have to fix a few things. One is that they need to higher a team to take care of quality control. Currently on Roblox you can find loads of copy and pasted cash grabbing games on the front page that exploit young children and infringes on other IPs which is NOT a good look for the platform. Two is definitely rising the DevEx rates. Third is overall their moderation, support, and the freedom given to developers. There's a invisible line of how far developers can push the boundaries when it comes to blood, violence, "romance" (not really a genre on Roblox), horror, ect. It doesn't help how sometimes Roblox will full on target a creator they do not like. We had a situation where a youtuber was on the platform that made games. The youtuber bad mouthed Roblox and had a history of trolling younger users when they were younger. Few year later they stopped doing that and grew up but their game was deleted for blood splatters which can be found in other games. It's very scary to be a developer on the platform cause it's highly expected that one day your game or even your account could easily be hacked and or banned. Sorry for this long read but Roblox is a really important part of my life and as a developer on the platform I obviously have a lot to say about the platform and how it treats their users and developers.

i can understand your first point of expanding QC teams but what exactly are "games on the front page that exploit young children"? devex rates - cant rly comment on this since there are so many factors that contribute to roblox's true "value" to devs eg the ecosystem, but roblox needs to try to be profitable, and it still isnt - the argument can be made that increasing the cut will create more "experienced" devs which will lead to more players + more players that will pay, but thats for the company to calculate (and i doubt they will take this approach) mod/support cant rly comment on, i personally havent had any issues. if ppl want more quality/quantity, = more costs, less chances of devex rates increasing freedom - this has changed quite a bit over the past yr (for the better?, im not that looped in with the news anymore); i think they had to be very restrictive since all games were for players, children included, but now that age guidelines/restrictions are taking place, i can only imagine more "risky" genres can exist on the platform roblox is a company and can target whoever they want, esp if it hurts their business (and causes more harm than benefit to them), its just reality account hacked/banned - i am almost certain that accounts dont get banned for "no reason", it just makes no sense logistically; "hacked" isnt really their problem, though they can force more 2fa etc if ppl want ig

It's not only the dev ex rates that are ruining their long term goals, but their technical expectation of what developers have to make. They expect developers to make games that can run on mobile, and do not offer any way of unlocking the performance cap for non-mobile games. They force scripters to always think of optimization to the point where you need to hire a developer or two whose sole job is to optimize old features as new features are rolled out, if you want quality optimized content to be rolled out weekly.

Due to the unfair exchange rates, developers have to either make cheap cash grabs that takes advantages of various loopholes or make a game so good and revolutionary that everyone on the site will flock to if they want profit. Issue is that making good games takes hard work, and like all games that have actual effort put into them, they may just die, considering how tedious advertising your games can be. This results in very similar games that are boring and put in-game transactions in your face all the time. This is actually pretty profitable considering that most of the player base are literal 1 month old fetuses that will play just about anything in front of them. I feel like the devs could really use extra income, so they don’t feel obligated to make cash grabs and give newer devs a bigger incentive to work harder on their games, because the state of the site in general has been really disappointing at best, and downright unsafe at worst.

With roblox games you have to constantly update them to add bew features or remove bugs. Roblox updates from time to time which also causes old code to break. It's a pain for they pay you get.

Fair enough. I've devexed a few times and although there are some losses let's look at it in a different aspect. Roblox provides alot of services that other developers on other platforms don't get. Having to not pay for them is is a big advantage. Being able to earn profits without having to organize much is heavenly. I still think Roblox needs to invest more on their developer community platform to the furthest potential. They have recently gone public to the stock market and I can guarantee it's becoming tougher in a financial aspect for them. Still it's not just Roblox's developer community, they also need to improve their moderation.

Great to see yoyo games sponsoring videos of youtubers. This move maybe represents the new era the company is going through, since Opera bought them and I hope it means betters things to developers and gamers. With that being said, Roblox is doing something similar to what buildbox is suffering now(low cut to developers and making you pay to increase cut you can receive), and as GameMaker is trying to compete against Unity and Unreal, I expect Roblox and Buildbox to have more competitors, forcing them to be more competitive and offer better conditions to developers using them.

I've noticed there are quite a few reasons why the DevEX exchange rate is what it is right now. For one, Roblox used to have another currency called Tickets. Roblox gave a few each time you log in, and there was a way to transfer these Tickets into Robux. Seeing as though Tickets were only discontinued a few years ago, there's got to be a huge amount of Robux gotten with Tickets. Low DevEX rate helps to cut the amount of Robux with no monetary value out of circulation. Another reason is you save quite a bit if you buy in bulk. If you buy 400, each Robux is worth ~0.0125 each meanwhile 10,000 Robux is worth ~0.00909. While that might not seem significant, basically you're getting 1,000 more Robux compared to paying using the 400 Robux's per-robux rate. And just in case you're curious, Robux gives devs 0.0035 per Robux, meaning Roblox takes 61% to 72%. Keep in mind that Roblox still has to pay payment providers for facilitating Robux transactions; the most they're paying is 30% on mobile devices (though I believe a few mobile apps stores have lowered their rates in favor of Devs), and the lowest I believe is PayPal's rate of 2.9% plus 30 cents, (unless the Roblox Gift Cards provided by FastCard has lower fees).

I've actually NEVER seen or even considered how the DevEx rates could be unfair or whatnot. I've been developing on Roblox for 8 years now and I now am able to DevEx every single month for around the past year. I've honestly just always been incredibly thankful for just having the opportunity to make make money from doing games on Roblox... but in the past few months, I've started to realize how much making a "front-page-quality" game actually takes... While working on my biggest project yet, I reached out to a sound producer that worked with Nintendo, popular movies, etc, and after asking for his rates, I immediately said no, I wasn't even CLOSE to the amount of money I needed for a single track. This video is really making me question, am I getting enough from my consumers?? IK apple only takes 30% of a cut total from your apps, so going from the apple game store to the Roblox games... Kinda crazy to think Roblox almost takes 3 times more than what apple takes... Seeing an up in DevEx rates would definitely help me to continue to push on with hiring and working on really good games. Not sure what side to take but I do think Roblox needs to focus #1 on moderation first, they're moderation is awful and IK plenty of devs who have quitted completely due to getting hacked or falsely banned and whatnot!

i believe that games that are mostly appreciated by the community should get better revenue due to the fact that many games on the roblox platform barely holds itself as it gets younger children and manipulate them into spending money to give the bad game better revenue, as games that people like (which can be used from the rating of dislikes and likes ratio) should discuss how well and the amount of revenue they should make. For example Phantom Forces, as that game is a true revolution toward roblox games, so it should make better revenue cuts.

As a Roblox developer I love to talk to people about this topic. I like to see other people agreeing with me. Roblox developers are carrying the website and are the only reason the website is as popular as it is. Roblox gives developers 70% of a purchased item. Meaning if I made a game pass for perks in my game for 100 robux I would get 70. Then on top of that to do developer exchange you need 100k robux which is hard to get. I have made about 4 games now that took months to create. And I have made about 1 million robux from them. On top of that 10,000 robux costs 100 dollars so if I bought 100,000 it would be 1,000 dollars. Yet Roblox only gives developers $300 which don’t get me wrong is fine but for smaller developers like myself they don’t have huge studios it isn’t very good compensation for what they do. Roblox needs to make a better system and I hope after their lawsuit they will fix it. Until then I really hope people realize the same thing I do.

As a scripter on the platform, I kinda understand why the amount of revenue roblox takes is justifiable. The roblox studio platform is a super easy and ready to use platform to create games on that roblox provides to you for free. While some other programs sell their platforms, roblox also allows you to upload your game to their website to get free publicity. At the end of the day roblox is taking alot of money but it's justified.

Roblox games have high diversity and you can notice the age difference between game types and such. Hi PolyMars!!!, I'm a new subcriber of your Channel. All your videos are so cool, i love it all!! 😀😀. I'm just a simple Highschool studient that loves Computer Science, and is trying to learn English. Anyway, What I really wanted to tell you. I used to play a game called, PUBG *Lite* with my friends in the beggining of this year, it was so cool and nice to play with people. We celebrate my birthday in that game😅 The game was just a Copy of the original Pubg, but with lower requirements, and free to play... I can't imagine how that game was made It Looked so beatifull all the textures, the animations were so real, the maps, it seems like a PS4 Game. And the game requirements was only a Core I3 from 3rd Gen, 4gb of Ram and 4gb of free space Yes, all the game weighs only 4gb *Only 4* Well, the game was closed because there were a lot of hackers... But I make me a question Can I make a PUBG lite Port to a Xbox 360 and PS3?? I think that is possible to make a port, the game was so light, and i could make it run in a Intel Celeron n2830 with HD intel graphics :) (yeah, i used to play that game with my friends in a sh*t computer) _Do you think you could accept a challenge like that?_ Nice video!

(I commented before watching this video) I completely agree that the current system (DevEx) is kind of terrible. This is mostly due to the fact that roblox pays for a lot of privileges roblox developers have (example: free servers). The good thing is I'd I'd roblox has been making an effort to fix this system.

  • @whipfella9097

That requirement to buy premium before you can dev ex is the most annoying part, why do you have to pay them before you can get them to pay you? Its dev ex can't they also just deduct the 5 dollars from the dev exchange that will be requested by the player? They also have a very old or lacking website, their income grew significantly during this pandemic and little effort is given to their website. :sadge:

A couple of things missing here context wise. First of all, going based purely off of the numbers provided in the video, they don’t take 65%. You don’t add percentages together. If the dev exchange rate is 35%, then it’s not 35% of the total revenue. Only of the robux you are trying to exchange. So of the 800 robux your product sold, you see 364 robux worth in your bank account. This is 45% of that initial 800 (Roblox takes a 55% cut total) Secondly, of that 55% a large portion goes towards infrastructure. Infrastructure the devs would otherwise have to develop and maintain themselves. After that cost (I’m going to take a wild guess and say that infrastructure costs are about 25%), there is then advertising for not only Roblox, but your games too. After all is said and done, I would say Roblox sees about 10-15% in pure profits. This is opposed to your 45% takeaway from your game that you pay no upkeep for (at least not in terms of general game updates and what not) Just some food for thought Cheers, Lucas

  • @verity5092
    @verity50922 жыл бұрын

I'm hoping by 2025 we developers have a 50% cut instead of a 75.5%, and that Roblox improves its engine along side these years so we can start to see giant companies start producing on the platform as a more common occurrence, depending on the engine's improvements and dev cut.

Do remember that initially the main point of making games is just to make robux which you can reinvest into your profile, buy gamepasses on other games, or advertise your game. The devex is just a feature there if anyone wants to make money. Certainly a good business model for roblox though.

I both agree and disagree with you. Roblox servers are running 24/7, with almost no lag. Uploading a game to roblox is basically free (except for premium if you want DevEx), which makes creating a multiplayer much easier, in comparision to other platforms wich require you to either run the servers yourself or pay money for server hosting. On the other hand, it's quite frustating when 75% of your profit gets taken away.
