Is Rice Healthy? | Dr. Josh Axe

Benefits of Brown Rice: bit.ly/2UDJjLm
Today I am answering the question, “Is rice healthy?” and explaining the difference between white rice and brown rice.
My answer is that it really depends on you. I will show you the pros and cons of rice and go over what I believe is the healthiest rice today. There is a debate today about if you should consume rice or not:
⁃ The paleo diet community says to stay grain-free and therefore that rice is not healthy
⁃ Chinese medicine followers and vegans think rice can be an incredible superfood
I believe there is validity to both but it depends on the person and the preparation of the rice.
Rice to stay away from: Refined White Rice (This is not jasmine or basmati rice but the sticky white rice from fast food or Chinese restaurants.)
Rice Cons:
• Fiber, minerals and vitamins have been removed.
• A study shows that people are twice as likely to develop diabetes as opposed to those eating whole grain brown rice.
• Contains phytic acid (enzyme inhibitor) which keeps you from absorbing and digesting vitamins and minerals.
• Contains proteins that are difficult to digest
Rice Pros:
• Whole grain brown rice is high in B3 which is good for heart health.
• Whole grain brown rice is high in selenium which supports the thyroid and kidneys.
• Certain types of rice contain GABA, a neurotransmitter that can support the brain and help reduce anxiety as well as support metabolism.
So ... is rice healthy? Is brown rice healthy? It depends on how it is prepared. I believe if rice is soaked and sprouted, it unlocks the vitamins and minerals versus most rice that aren’t sprouted.
I personally consume organic rice from the company, True Roots. It is a germinated brown rice (soaked and sprouted) which kills off phytic acid and is easier to digest.
In Chinese medicine, look up “qi” or “chi.” They believe that short grain brown rice increase your body’s “qi” which is your body’s life source and energy. It is considered to be one of the #1 healing foods. I suggest my patients make a “congee” with chicken bone broth, brown rice and vegetables such as carrots and celery. This chicken vegetable rice soup is healing and nourishing to the body.
In conclusion, is rice healthy? Yes, it can be if you are doing sprouted rice that is traditionally prepared. Simply put, stay away from white refined rice that is void of vitamins and minerals and can cause a spike in your blood sugar and insulin levels.

Well I am from Assam from northeast India. And in whole North eastern India we consider rice as the most healthy things. It has been the main food for us from thousends of years. We eat 3 times per day. Everything we eat is 70 percentage of rice. Mostly white rice.

I have a few observations - white rice is probably one of the few foods out there world-wide almost nobody is allergic too. Secondly, parboiled white rice like parboiled basmati rice is even more healthier and more easily digestible than brown rice.

I agree 100%. It depends on our body and how we prepare it. As a person with loads of food allergies, I can bravely say that white Basmati or Jasmine rice are the only grains that are very gentle towards my digestive system. However, for the people with poor digestive system like me and for an easy digestion, I recommend to wash the rice 2 or 3 times, then soak the rice in cold water two hours before cooking to rehydrate it. Then you can start the cooking process.

It comes down to how much rice and what you pair with. East Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese) usually eat rice with protein source (traditionally not much fry, mostly boil, steam, braise) and vegetables, a lot of vegetables. We also consume fermented sides like kimchi, natto, miso.

Good video. Something to note about rice- different types are higher or lower in histamines, so if you have skin and allergy issues like grasses and sensitive to histamines be careful how you choose, have someone who knows rices well and your issues help you select the rice for you and how often you should have it and cook it. Also very important for everyone is that naturally rice is higher in arsenic, so too much eating it is an issue, foreign countries also have issues with their water supply causing higher levels of arsenic and/or other toxins in the rice, so consider USA organic non-gmo rice that you know is exactly what you are looking for. That said soaking rice overnight to ferment it is healthy, there are some great recipes on the internet on how to use it for your skin, hair as well as ingesting it. As with all foods, know it, love it and moderate it, bon apetit. Blessings with the bountiful eating.

Eating rice is actually good, I’ve been eating that since birth. Haha Asian perks here but its benefits will actually depends how much you it. 1-3 cups of rice a day are enough. Many of us avoida eating too much rice to avoid getting fat but getting enough of it is actually good for some health benefits and economical tributes. For example, if your usual meal consume 2 pieces of chicken, well, if you have rice, a half piece of chicken will work in combination of the chicken itself or of its soup. ^_^

Very informative, but I think you should have said how we can have sprout rice at home (I'm not in the States and I don't have access to this particular brand of rice). Besides, honestly, if you show a commercial product but also show how we can get the same thing this product offers without having to buy that specific brands, it gives a lot more of credibility to the video..

Must read this: I am a American and my wife is Filipina from the Philippines, my wife eats white rice ar least 6 to 7 times a week so I been eating it lot of white rice the last 3 years, my answer to white rice is Don't eat it to much, my wife just lays in bed all the time. She never has any energy at all, her hair is falling so bad and I think she has high blood pressure as well, could this possible be from eating to much white rice which we buy a lot of it from the Chinese food story, I am also falling apart since I been eating it as well, and my blood pressure is on the rise to according to my doctor who is now checking me every 6 months for that now, is all that rice putting us in such bad shape, we also have a kid that is almost 16 months that eats a lot of rice and he can't even walk yet, could the rice be doing all the damage to all 3 of us?

Actually, thanks to rice, Philippines is lower on diabetes prevalence compared to other countries. It's still healthier (or less unhealthy) to get yourself full with a food paired with rice versus rice alternatives such as bread, potatoes or pasta.

Thank you so much for the video:)! You didn't talk about black rice?! Haitians eat white rice everyday, we avoid brown rice like the plague. I'm Haitian I grew up eating white rice everyday, we eat it with beans (red beans, black beans, lima beans, white beans, peas, lima beans on different days) and there were centenarians and old people around me. Never missed a day of school, perfect attendance, never sick, when we moved to the US and continued on our Haitian diet, doctors always amazed by our blood work and would always ask my mom what did she feed us. American fake processed food is the real culprit I believe, not rice. My Haitian grandmother is 89, eats white rice every single day of her life, had 12 children, no morning sickness. Hard for me to buy into this white rice is bad phenomenon, even though I don't eat it as much as I used to when I was growing up and my mom did all the cooking, maybe fake food is the real culprit.

I'm an Indian living in Assam n I consume 3/4 times white rice in a day n believe me it's not bad but as Dr. said it should be unrefined. Consumption of food depends on the climate and tradition one belongs to. Traditional foods are THE BEST FOODS. Lastly those who wants to have rice n thinks that it is not good as most Indians started thinking so get one thing clear it's the quantity of rice and ur lifestyle that matters.

+Dr. Josh Axe Sorry, but I know a Chinese family who ate rice 2 times a day all their life. All of the oldest ones live to 99 to 101. And the rest are alive. My friends who eat organic grass fed meat and gluten are very unhealthy at 70-80 years old. So your logic and science is FALSE. I say that as a diabetic who can't even eat rice. But the Japanese and Chinese live longer than y'all.

  • @AlexKinPongLo

+Vette gaddia This is because the American food is all high in meat or protein, as well as the fast junk food. The main protein sources of Japanese and Chinese are the beans and tofu made by beans, or from the fruits. Actually, humans do not need too much protein, only 200g a day. Some kind of vegetables and fruits are high in protein which mean don't need many meats. As protein induces radicals and radicals cause ageing and cancer. Other than health problem, cows cause global warming and desertification, as cow consumes huge among of grass and their farts contain CO2. So westerners should go raw and raw diet. If not all, the method of American lifestyle is not sustainable for the global development. American lifestyle means the over consuming, materialistic life, sex and cash. Two ways: 1. depopulation and new world order, many people suffer from terrorism and war planned by USA. 2. Go green, people eat healthier with better lifestyles, no fossil fuel but free energy.

My stomach was pained from eating peanut butter, earlier in my day. It abcerlutly bloated and felt that maybe it was too acidic for my tummy. I guess this from the burning/heated sensation that came back up into my throat (hours later). It was an organic brand too! For my late night meal, I had brown rice, kidney beans, peppers, avacardo, etc and my stomach pain has totally gone! Abcerlutly felt that it 'mopped' up any stomach acid in tummy. Also, my anxiety has gone and so has my nervous energy...

'Kanji' more precisely 'ganji' is originally a South Indian word. Ganji is a poor man's food. Just leftover cooked rice soaked in water overnight and had early morning with random side dishes. Ganji has nothing to do with China or Ancient Chinese medicine. I know the concept is adopted by other neighboring countries but just getting sick of westerners taking so many things/concepts that come from India and wrongly attributing them to China or Japan or whatever.
